Game Thread tOSU at USC, Sat. Oct. 31st, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Feeling pretty good about this one. As long as Fahey doesn't try to do too much, I think we're good
Expect an offense like Texas last year. They will give him one maybe two reads and a very limited playbook. He has the best player in the country to throw too, as well as several other recievers that will be playing in the NFL. Sadly the running game has been a little suspect, but I do think if he can pull a few early for first downs it will open up the run game. Thankfully USCs defense is dogshit.

Prediction. 35-17. Fahey Throws for 4tds. #4 goes for 150yds and 2tds. Tightends will be used early and often, using 4 as a decoy for easy completions. Bo pounds one in late. Defense stifles them.

Ryan Day Radio Show: Ryan Day Says “Everyone Has To Do Their Part” at USC; Ross Bjork Discusses Potential Big Ten Scheduling Changes, Future Upgrades to Ohio Stadium

Ryan Day

On Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair

  • “They’ve been stepping up.”
  • “The guys have been rallying around them.”
  • “They’ve had a good week of work.”
  • “We got to go play really well this week.”

On how to help a young quarterback

  • Day said he’s drawn on his own experience and the experiences of his former quarterbacks to help Fahey and St. Clair prepare for USC.
  • Day said Ohio State’s coaches try to make practices “harder than the game.” He said the quarterbacks can be confident heading into the USC game knowing they’ve faced some of the best players in college football in practice over the past two weeks.
  • Day said Ohio State’s quarterbacks have a mission: take care of the football, run the routine plays, don’t make bad situations worse and win the game.
  • “How do you help a young quarterback? You play great defense, you run the football efficiently. Everyone has to do their part, step up in a big way and I think the guys know that.”

On Ohio State’s skill players stepping up without Julian Sayin

  • Day said Bo Jackson and Isaiah West need to be at their best against USC.
  • Day said Ohio State’s offense starts with Jeremiah Smith, but other players will have opportunities against the Trojans. He said Devin McCuin has had a good week of practice and Kyle Parker has been coming around, too.
  • Day said Philip Bell has stood out over the past few weeks, comparing him to Emeka Egbuka. “I see a lot of Emeka Egbuka in Phil Bell, the way he plays and his approach, his size, the way he catches and plays strong. I think his confidence is growing. Somebody that in the second half of the season is poised to make a big difference.”

On Ohio State’s bye week

  • “I don’t like bye weeks. It gets me out of the routine.”
  • “The players like bye weeks. They get to catch their breath a little bit.”
  • “The one thing it did do, losing Julian, it has allowed us a couple of weeks to get ourselves organized and pare down and really get focused on what we want to get done in this game (against USC).”

On Ohio State’s offense with a new quarterback

  • Day said Ohio State won’t overhaul its offense with a new quarterback.
  • “We have a good offensive line. We have good running backs. We have good receivers.”
  • Day said the Buckeyes have been running the same plays in the same formations since the spring. They may “sprinkle in the things that we think put him in a situation to be successful,” but the offense will largely look the same.

On Austin Siereveld and Ohio State’s offensive line health

  • “Good to get Austin back this week, for sure.”
  • “We’ll see how it plays out, but it was good to get his legs back underneath him.”
  • Day said a bye week helps offensive linemen get healthy and catch their breath.
  • Day said it’s been “really important” to build depth on Ohio State’s offensive line this season. “We take a lot of pride in how we develop, the way we practice and you’re starting to see some of that pay off here with some of the guys who are able to come in and play.”
  • Day said Gabe VanSickle and Jake Cook have stepped up as Ohio State has battled injuries on the offensive line.

On Austin Siereveld’s versatility

  • “I think if you put a gun to his head he’d probably say tackle, but I think he feels like he can swing.”
  • Day said Siereveld has the versatility to play both positions.
  • Day said Siereveld can play both guard and tackle “at a high level.”

On Ohio State’s nickel depth

  • Day said Jordan Thomas and Simeon Caldwell could step into Ohio State’s nickel position if Jay Timmons and Jermaine Mathews Jr. weren’t available.
  • “Both of those young players — we have a bright future here in a lot of different areas, and those are two good examples of guys who are helping on special teams and when they get put into a position to play for us on defense we feel confident that they’re gonna do their job.”
  • On Jay Timmons: “He just has a certain knack for making plays and competitiveness.”

On Ohio State’s culture

  • “When you walk into our team meeting room, our culture is ‘Fight.’ Fight to become the best version of yourself. … Life is a fight. The world is a fight. Every day we’re all fighting something. … That’s not going away.”
  • “One of the tools that we use — we have all these different tools that we use, and one of them is ‘Win the moment.’ … We can look back and learn from the past. We have to. … Ultimately, what matters is ‘What are we doing with right now?’ Nothing is guaranteed. We don’t know what’s gonna happen tomorrow.”
  • Day said he constantly reminds his players to “Be here” and live in the moment...
