Game Thread tOSU at Penn State, Sat. Nov. 2, 12pm ET, FOX

I saw Zen is out. Have to think Jackson will be the starter at LT.

I also read something today where UFM said Howard needs to run the ball 15-20 times per game. I'd personally love to see that more - having to account for a running QB by having specifically QB run plays would benefit the offense a lot. The few times they ran it specifically with Howard against Nebraska worked.

In the 4 Big Ten Games Ped has played, they've given up right about 300 yards of total offense. The best offense Ped has played so far was USC, who went for over 400 (and probably should have won).

I feel fairly confident about this one. Assuming the LT spot has been decided and handled, I think a lot of Ped's ranking is paper tiger-ish. If the offense can get regular first downs, can score TDs instead of FGs when they are in the red zone and the plays that are working show up more than the one time they work, I feel pretty good about it on that said.

On defense, Ped does not have anything like Oregon's receiving corps. They have some decent running backs, Julian Fleming and their tight end, Tyler Warren, can be very effective in keeping their offense on schedule. If the front 4 can get consistent pressure on Allar, since it appears he's going to play, I think they can shut down this offense. if the other QB (Pribula) comes in, he's a far superior runner to Allar, and if the linebackers are not on their game, that could be a very difficult matchup. I guess we shall see....

He's going to get hit with a shuffled OL, so might as well pick your time and place and he can slide at times as well.

Honestly, I’m more confident with Jackson than Zen. Time will tell.
They need to help whomever is starting at LT with a blocking TE. Going to be an adjustment.

It seemed like Zen was on a island, which I believe was a disservice to him.

The right guard is a big concern.

Have no idea why Hinzman is not getting reps at all.

Really really having a hard time with Frye.

Totally agreed. Just have a TE Chip the end before going out for a pass. We don’t need 10 seconds we just need 3-4 seconds for our guys to get open.

Lightning Round: Ryan Day Says Lathan Ransom Will Play Against Penn State, Zen Michalski Will Miss the Game

  • On Davison Igbinosun wearing mitts at practice instead of gloves: "It's just something a lot of folks use, and we do too. It's usually during preseason camp or spring practice. Usually you use them for one-on-ones. We brought them out for the entire practice so he can't grab. That hurts you a little bit on the line of scrimmage, but then once you clear those 5 yards you train yourself to run with guys and not grab. He had a couple of really good reps today. I thought it was a good idea."
  • On using a silent count against Penn State: "It's a big challenge. In going on the road, that's a big part of going into that environment is handling that. That's the challenge for those guys. They know that. ... We try to make it as loud as we possibly can (in practice) and simulate what it will be like. We've had multiple guys make sure to do it in preseason camp, do it in the spring and, obviously, we're doing it now during this week. We did it during the Oregon week, the bye week. We did all those things. Guys have reps at it, but it takes discipline. We had multiple guys do it. We feel confident going into the game that we'll be able to handle it."
  • On Zen Michalski: "It's trending that he's not gonna play. We'll keep evaluating it, but we have a pretty good plan moving forward."
  • On Ohio State's plans at left tackle: "I'll save that for Saturday."
  • On Caleb Downs: "He's a tremendous player. You can see him flying around the last three, four games making plays. Always around the ball. Fast to trigger. We were able to get him in as a returner so he can have even more of an impact on the game. He's doing a lot of things for us. He's a tremendous player."
  • On Lathan Ransom: "He had a great day of practice today, a full practice. He's ready to go."
  • On rotating reps on the defensive line: "At the end of the day, we have to win the game. That's the first thing. Whatever we feel like going into the game is the right thing. We certainly take the opinions of the assistant coaches, but at the end of the day, I'm the head coach, so it goes through me. I think we need to continue to roll guys. We will roll guys. Now, how many reps? That's different. In the Oregon game, every rep counts in that game. We got to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure we're fresh in the fourth quarter, for sure. But we also got to do everything we can to win the game. We will rotate some guys in there. We'll evaluate as we get closer to the game, but we'll roll guys in practice. We want to be fresh in the fourth quarter."
  • On Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau being close to having a breakout game: "They want to. They're pushing hard. They had a really good practice out there, another edgy practice out there. In these type of games, our best players have to play well. That was the message to our team. Our leaders gotta lead and our best players have to play well in games like this. I know they're pushing hard to make sure they're playing their best game."

Kyle, an old-time joke heard. "the only thing Penn St graduates are football players and hoes" he said. His friend replied, 'my wife graduated from Penn St'. At which point the guy asked "what position did she play"? And oldie to be certain, and I've substituted the discussed school here....

Three primary thoughts here:

1. IGB has to wear mitts because of how bad he holds. While I admittedly laughed because it is like a cone of shame for a dog that won't stop licking and maybe it is a good strategy in practice, dear lord stop obviously holding receivers. I wanted him pulled after a certain point. Last year he showed that tendency, but after another year it is still happening and even worse? Bro, get it together...you can be physical without holding, especially against Nebraska.
2. Like that Day won't tip his hand on LT and that Ransom will play...we need Ransom bad in this one.
3. JT is like the Great Pumpkin in the sense that he only shows up for PSU games. Not looking to neg the kid, but he needs to dial in his past PSU performances for this one.

Comparing Ohio State vs. Penn State at Every Position

Quarterback

Drew Allar has improved significantly in his second year as Penn State’s quarterback, completing 71.3 percent of his passing attempts for 10 yards per attempt after completing just 59.9% of his passes for 6.8 yards per pass a year ago. If Allar plays on Saturday, which he appears on track to be, Ohio State should expect a tougher test than last year, when Allar went just 18-of-42 for 191 yards against the Buckeyes.

But even if Allar wasn’t dealing with a knee injury that forced him out of the second half of last week’s game against Wisconsin, I’d still give the slight edge to Will Howard based on how well he’s been playing for the Buckeyes. Howard is currently on pace to break Ohio State’s single-season completion percentage record with a 74% rate, and his current quarterback rating would be the second-best in school history behind only C.J. Stroud in 2021. Penn State has the best running quarterback on either team in Beau Pribula, who would start if Allar can’t play and will likely get some playing time regardless, but Howard offers plenty of running ability himself to make him a player Penn State will have to account for on all downs.

Advantage: Ohio State

Running Back

The two best running back tandems in college football will be in the same stadium on Saturday. TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins have teamed to rush for 969 yards and 10 touchdowns for Ohio State this season while Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have combined for 992 yards and seven touchdowns.

Ohio State’s rushing offense has struggled in its last two games, but that has much more to do with its offensive line than its ballcarriers. I still believe Henderson and Judkins are the nation’s best running back tandem, though Singleton and Allen are also a dangerous pair that will force Ohio State’s defense to be sound in its tackling and run fits.

Advantage: Ohio State

Wide Receiver

This is the most lopsided advantage Ohio State has over Penn State at any position group. Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka are two of college football’s absolute best receivers, and Carnell Tate is also averaging more yards per game than any Penn State wideout after his 102-yard effort last week vs. Nebraska.

Harrison Wallace III is a solid No. 1 wideout for Penn State, but he’d be fighting Tate to be OSU’s No. 3 receiver if he was a Buckeye. Julian Fleming was a starter at Ohio State in 2022 and 2023, but he would have lost his spot in the lineup to Smith and Tate if he had stuck around, and he’s caught only 10 passes for 148 yards in his first seven games as a Nittany Lion.
