tOSU at Penn State, Oct. 31, 7:30 ET, ABC

Pete Werner spent the entirety of last season hearing people openly wonder why he played for Ohio State over Brendon White. Jonathon Cooper was rarely discussed as an impactful defensive end, with conversations tilted toward Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith. Haskell Garrett, even before he got shot in the face, had everybody projecting Taron Vincent as the team’s next star 3-technique. Tuf Borland has listened to years of nonstop criticism. Tyler Friday gets forgotten about all the time due to his smaller stature in comparison to other edge rushers.

The defensive line, as position coach Larry Johnson told his players ahead of the season, is filled with a “bunch of no-names” trying to replace Chase Young. The linebacker corps consists of a group that constantly has onlookers question why they’re on the field instead of the younger players at their position.

The guys littering Ohio State’s front seven have gone overlooked in their careers. They’re no longer the youngest or shiniest players teeming with blank resumes and seemingly endless potential. Yet without them, the Buckeyes’ 38-25 beatdown of Penn State on the road would have looked a heck of a lot different.

“Overall, I thought we played physical,” Day said. “I thought we had good energy. We played tough. It wasn't clean, but our guys just kept swinging away.”

And up front on defense, it all stemmed from a largely unheralded slew of defensive linemen and linebackers.

“Probably the most bizarre thing I’ve ever experienced. When there was two seconds on the clock, we took a long knee, probably took four seconds off the clock so it was completely mismanaged, I don’t know what to say,” Day said. “There’s two seconds on the clock, we take the snaps and Justin waits, waits, waits, waits, waits and then takes a knee. I don’t know how that took one second.”

While those three points ultimately proved inconsequential to the game’s outcome, as Ohio State won 38-25, it’s still likely the Big Ten will be hearing from Day on Sunday – it’s common practice for schools to submit disagreements and questions about officiating to the conference office after games – looking for further clarification on why there was ruled to still be time on the clock, or whether the clock operator simply screwed up.

“They said it came down from replay, and that’s all I know, so I don’t know what to say,” Day said. “It was obviously extremely frustrating, but another thing that we just overcame. If it was four seconds left, we probably would have either just punted it or used the quarterback to get more time. But there was only two seconds. So I don’t know how that’s even physically possible, but anyway, we’ll move on and deal with it tomorrow.”

JAMES FRANKLIN ON OHIO STATE: “IT’S NOT JUST JUSTIN, IT’S ALL THE PIECES AROUND HIM AS WELL”

117752_h.jpg

James Franklin was THIS CLOSE to having Justin Fields as his quarterback.

When the No. 2 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class committed to Franklin and the Nittany Lions – doing so in large part because of the raucous White Out environment that was absent on Saturday night – it would have brought a transcendent talent to State College.

Instead, Franklin has now had to game plan for him two years in a row, and on Saturday night the future top-five NFL draft pick tied his career high with four passing touchdowns to pair with 318 yards on 28-of-34 passing and a 199.7 quarterback rating.

Fields is probably the best quarterback Franklin has coached against in his career, and when asked that exact question – have you ever faced against a better quarterback than Justin Fields? – Franklin side-stepped it and instead deferred to the overall talent deployed by the Buckeyes.

“I'm not sure,” Franklin said. “He is talented, and it's not just Justin, it's all the pieces around him as well. I think we got a pretty good pass rush. We weren't able to get to him a whole lot tonight so they protected him well. They did a good job of mixing the run and the pass. They're very talented on the perimeter and the wide receiver positions as well – all the things that we knew.”

Franklin's not wrong.

When you have a receiver duo like Chris Olave (seven catches, 120 yards, two touchdowns) and Garrett Wilson (11 catches, 111 yards), a former borderline five-star tight end prospect in Jeremy Ruckert who grabs two touchdown catches and a running game being led by perhaps the nation's best offensive line (one that finishes with for more than 200 yards led by Master Teague's 110 yards and one score), there's certainly an absurd amount of talent to have to stop.

Well first thoughts...

1. Defensive front 7 bullied PED. I thought the DTs were awesome and Cooper had a really nice game too. The defensive ends blew up the read option all game.
2. Offense was so efficient but I thought our aggressiveness went away inside the 10 a ton tonight. A few times we had it first and goal and ran on both first and second down. I think we have to stay aggressive with early passes.
3. This kind of game from the back 4 will not win us a playoff game. Wade and Banks particularly could not stop Dotson and that's troublesome considering they went to Dotson basically every time they needed a play. Particularly on the 3rd and long those cannot happen and we've got to get off the field.

4. I thought the running game was better today and rushing for 200 on a good defense is a good outing. Have to say though I'm still a bit concerned with the amount of plays that get stuffed.

5. This was a blowout but somehow it wasn't. We missed two short field goals, they were given 9 points, we had some penalty issues to keep things alive for them and yet the game was never close. I've learned to be happy with the win against these guys and I really am pleased overall. I'll say this though if they have that crowd and Parson/Brown this game would be really interesting. They never quit so credit to them at least for that because it could've and maybe should've been at least 45-14

6. Glad we have a few weeks now where we play no one basically. Time to get these younger players a look. The starters have played essentially the entire first two games.

7. Injuries? I hope Brown and Farrel are okay...I hadn't seen any updates about them yet.

Yes, the clock was mismanaged. But Justin Fields should have waited until he saw :00 on the clock. When his knee touched, it was :01. And I knew he should have waited. He should have run or something.
(How great would it have been if he was sitting there waiting for the clock to start, and then he just ran for a touchdown.) Fields shouldn't have let that happen. But yes, 4 seconds should have been enough to run 2 seconds off the clock.

Kinda sad Borland doesn't have speed... cuz the dude has serious skills and instincts. but as soon as offenses see him they scream "crossing routes"
Werner made himself a ton of money. Kid is gonna play for a lot of years.
Not sold on Sermon yet. Can see immense effort and grit but... a good back but was expecting an elite one. Teague is earning his keep.
For some reason.. always been a Babb fan and always hoping to see him in there... but entire Zone 6 is going to play on Sundays... Superlative group... ELITE

OK, here's my take on the areas that Ohio State needs to improve on:

Stop committing those needless personal fouls. On offense they can kill your offensive drives and on defense they can basically be a turnover when you stop them on 3rd down, but they get a new set of downs (and 15 yards) due to the penalty.

Also....special teams were terrible last night. Will bite us in the ass against the elite.

-D Front feels... 2009ish? A lot of names that aren't big, but they play as well as anyone.
-DB's need some real work.
-Special teams weren't so special. A hallmark of the Tress and Urban era.

-Fields is Fields. I see improvement as a passer, although the ball does tend to get away from him on occasion. Kid will be a top 5 pick, but I honestly have to ask myself - Do I feel he's a more gifted passer than Haskins?
-Might be the finest receiving corps in the country.
-Running game is going to be supplementary all year. Offense really ran through Dobby and play action last season, playing a game of opposites this season.

Considering weird shit tends to happy to this team @ Happy Valley during night games, I'll take a 13 point win on Halloween with a full moon.

Pete Werner has balled out for 2 years now. This guy should play on Sunday. Tuf had himself a really good game and was there waiting to take Clifford down on the QB runs.

Special teams continue to be underwhelming. Even under Urban they were suspect.

Glad that we are getting to watch this team. Really just taking time to enjoy watching JF and company, in a year of weirdness.

He can stick people man... he really does hit hard and shows up fast too.

I'd be remiss if I didnt mention that Borland also played really really well. This was as good of a game as he's had here.
