tOSU 70, at Purdue 66 (Jan 12, 2010, 7 ET, ESPN)

Take a few minutes and read this thread from the start.

It provides some good examples of reasons why posters need to take a step back from the keyboard when posting during games with the Buckeyes down.

Some random thoughts from the game last night (and what a game it was!):

1. Turner is the best player in college basketball. I've watched a lot of games in which the top players have played this year, and there's no one better than Turner. He can score at will (read Matt Painter's post-game quotes), and his game is extremely well rounded (9 rebounds and 3 assists to go with his 32 points).

2. Before the game, I said we'd have to get after it on the defensive end and on the boards if we were going to win at Purdue. We held an 8 rebound advantage on the boards, and Lauderdale's defense on Johnson (who had 4 points) and Lighty's defense on Hummel (who had 6 points in the second half) were masterful. Lighty is so athletic that he can guard just about any guard or forward in the country and shut them down.

3. If OSU can beat Purdue at Purdue when only two guys have good offensive games, imagine what they can do when all players get into the scoring mix. Last night, Turner (32 pts) and Buford (19 pts) were great, but the next highest scorer was Diebler with 6 pts. If others are scoring threats, that will create more open looks for everyone on the floor.

4. Free throw shooting was great last night, despite the fact that it can at times be a weakness of this team. Great job to knock those down on the road in a tough environment.

I doubt we will be a bubble team a few weeks from now. Hell, if we keep rolling the commitee may throw out our losses while ET was gone and give us a surprisingly high seed.

I read this entire thread and there was not one word about Simmons. If it were not for him, forgetting about Turner and WB for a second, Ohio State would probably have lost this game. He had that huge three when he first came in and then added another basket before he departed once again.

I know that Dallas and David play because of their rebounding and defense but they really need to cut down on their turnovers and get better with their free-throw shooting.

I still don't understand why Matta did not put a chaser on H?mmel sometime during the first half. I just didn't understand it because he was the only guy doing any type of scoring which eventually led to Purdue's defeat.

Another tough game coming this weekend with Wisconsin even if it is at home. They always seem to play as well and we really need to cut down on our TOs.
Isn't it about time the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee looks into when a player can call a timeout. They finally fixed the one where the guy cannot call a timeout while flying out of bounds and now it's about time to fix the one where a guy does not have complete possession of the ball and is rolling all over the court. That is plain and stupid.

Congrats on a fine game Bucks. I went wild during the 2nd half.
I think that we don't cover a hot shooter very well and I think that's a Matta thing. I know it drives me crazy.
We did very well to win the way Hummel was shooting. Thank God he cooled down in the 2nd.

I agree, ET is the best player in college basketball, like you say he's so well-rounded and not only that but he is perhaps the biggest difference maker on any team - Kentucky without John Wall would still be a top-25 team, OSU without ET is an NIT team. Not only the best scorer in the Big Ten but an excellent rebounder and ballhandler as well.

As for the FTs, it's all about Lighty and Lauderdale not taking them! :)

I just made it to this thread, read it from the beginning, and was going to say the same exact thing.

Agree with the majority of the post, but this is absurd.

People have got to stop overrating this team. No scarlet glass...I honestly don't see that much talent, let alone the capability to play smartly (ala Northwestern) and make up for some deficiencies (i.e. turnovers).

As I type the team battles back...but I'd still like to see some defense.

Woops
