tOSU 62, at Minny 73 (Jan 9, 2010, 3:30 ET)

This team lacks a true top flight PG and Dallas is better suited for PF than C. The result is a lack of a post presence offensively and too many turnovers.

The recipe for success has to start with defense - holding opponents under 70 points. We also need scoring from Diebs, ET, Buford and Lighty - all four of them.

The opening sked in conference is brutal as well, but I expect better flow going forward now that ET is back in the fold. Let's get the next one. :)

I was disappointed they didn't guard Hoffarber better after he got hot. Lauderdale got away with a lot of fouls, so the officiating cuts both ways. Would like to see OSU be more well-prepared to face the press/traps ... the schedule softens significantly after Jan. 16th, so that's when OSU will have to start making their run.

Really?

Not going to dispute the "if we lose to Purdue" point. That won't have an change the team's standing.

I'm just not seeing a good team, let alone one "too good."

At the high point of Ohio state's performance, the computers had us losing last night and to Purdue away. Then, running off a string of victories. I think we lose at Purdue by double digits, just like the computers said earlier in the year.

I won't be too concerned if Evan Turner regains his confidence.

I don't think it's a confidence thing. I think it's a conditioning and "rust" thing. Once he's back in basketball shape and all the cobwebs are off he'll be tearing it up again. Another week or so in all likelyhood.

Not to be a stickler, but I have no clue what you are talking about. Evan Turner had one of his best games in his career at Minny. 19 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks, shot 56% from the field. He had 4 turnovers, but thats not an insane number considering he had 7 assists, and quite a few passes that resulted in guys getting fouled while shooting and heading to the line. Those are unreal numbers and while he could have taken care of the ball better at points, its unrealistic to think a 6'7 pg who plays the entire game isnt going to have around 3 turnovers a game. The scary team is, Minny was double teaming him pretty much the entire second half. Everytime he got the ball Minny would bring another man over on him. If you are expecting more from a player than what Turner did yesterday then you need to watch the NBA because there is no player in college basketball putting up those numbers.

The person whose confidence is a concern is Diebler. He is shooting 31% outside of Columbus for the year. 5 out of the last 8 games hes scored single digits, and thats while playing 38 minutes per game. Also in the 8 games since Turner went down, Diebler has 7 assists. A guard cannot be averaging less than 1 assist per 40 played. Hes also had 10 turnovers in that time. His fouls are way up too. First half of the year he averaged 1 pf a game, since Turner went down he is averaging about 3. I am not sure if he is injured or if its a mental thing, but the effort doesnt seem to be there either. Apparently Matta really dug into him with 6 minutes left in the first half and took him out because of his defense. If OSU is going to right this ship, they are going to need Diebler to play like he did in the first half and they cant have him disappear on the road.

Yep, great numbers. Also some slow and bad (dribbling right into several traps) decision making when Minnesota started trapping which led to their run that sealed the game.

Like it or not he's still rusty and not quite up to speed. I'm not criticizing him. It's inevitable after a 5 week layoff. What's impressive is how effective he was after coming back from the injury. I expect him to get even better in another week or so. Apparently you think he's already at his ceiling coming back.

Read what you wrote. You said once the rust wears off "he will be tearing it up again." You didnt say, "He will be even better." What you wrote is still there, I mean you can edit it, but Turner had a great game. Dribbling into traps shouldnt happen, but you have to cross mid court within 10 seconds and the real problem had to do with the spacing of the other guards. Standing 5 feet away from the pg dribbling the ball up the court and not moving to open passing lanes so that your man can easily double Turner is not helping. The real problem there was Matta's reluctance to call a timeout and tell any guard to stay back on the opposite side of the court and help bring the ball up, like OSU always does when facing a press. Its the same nonsense as players not staying back to inbound the ball after a score. Or the pretty much turnover a game off the inbounds pass. It has to do more with coaching and mental toughness than anything.

But again, what you wrote wasnt "he was 2 rebounds and 3 assists short of a triple double and had his most dominant defensive game of his career and he will only get better." It was in a few weeks, "he will be tearing it up again." My point was, he already has been tearing it up. He played better yesterday than any player in the country. So again, I am disagreeing with what you said, not with the new question you posed.

Also Turner's 2 turnovers in the second half is not what led to the run that sealed the game. The trapping hurt, but that was 2 turnovers on Turner. What hurt more was the fact that no one guarded the best 3 point shooter in the big 10 Blake Hoffarber.

Bill, I think we agree for the most part. I refer to his comment about releasing the ball instead of going for the dunk at speed in his first game back. There is absolutely no way that he isn't thinking about not reinjuring his back again. This will affect his confidence in some game situations, no matter how willing he is to "mix it up" already. Not being "game fit" and being rusty also will affect his confidence in respect to what he thinks he can do in the spur of the moment.

I also think that he will be fine after another game or two.
