tOSU -4.5 at Florida St, Tues 7:30 pm, ESPN

just got back from the game. some points:

1. i can't recall seeing an ohio state team have its shots blocked so often. it shocked me to check the box score upon return to the hotel and find out that we were blocked only 10 times. that doesn't sound correct to me. i would have staked a lot of dough that we were blocked at least 12 times.

2. blocking shots can also backfire. just ask lauderdale. lauderdale won't get the rebounding numbers that you think he should because he commits himself so often (too often?) to the block. when you attempt but don't get the block, you're almost always out of rebounding position. fsu was credited with 10 blocks. that's nice, but.... osu grabbed 14 offensive caroms. if you give the buckeyes extra possessions, we will kill you.... even if we can't hit the broad side of a broad barn.

3. the officiating was very poor. granted, when two teams play tenacious defense, calling a good game is a tough task. there were poor calls and non-calls on both sides of the floor, which balanced everything in the end. that being stated, how can the officials miss the grabbed rim? wow.

4. diebler had a piss-poor game behind the arc. i don't think jon secured a single rebound. when he attempted one lay-up, i think he hit the bottom of the rim. it sounds like diebler had a bad game, right? wrong. jon had one of his best defensive games that i've seen. he was an absolute pest. i've never understood posters claiming that he plays bad defense. though jon isn't athletically gifted, he is as fundamentally strong as lighty.

5. we really need deshaun to be 100%. his production on a per possession metric is phenomenal. in only 8 minutes, thomas had 5 rebounds. that is ungodly. by the end of the season when diesel's defense becomes dependable, the five of buford, diebler, lighty, thomas, and sullinger will be a wrecking ball.

6. fsu women are crazy hot.

Honestly, I didn't see anything that I thought was goaltending that wasn't called. A couple of times FSU hit the backboard and something could have been called, but the actions didn't affect the shot outcome and I thought they were good no-calls.
:slappy:
Dude, when you grab the rim to the point that it makes noise when it springs back, that's goaltending no matter how much the shot is affected. The same goes for the smacked backboard. That one wasn't as obvious, but that's not saying much since the first one was so blatant I'm surprised Matta didn't have a stroke when it went uncalled.

seeing the game in-person, i didn't get to see a replay. however, what i do know is that smacking the backboard is not necessarily illegal. i definitely would not consider it goaltending but instead basket interference. i think the key here is whether the slapping of the backboard or grabbing of the rim caused an unnatural bounce of the ball off the backboard. at the time of the alleged offenses, i think no part of the ball was in the cylinder, which, if so, should have been cause for basket interference. i may be wrong.

Pulling down the ring before the ball hits it (or when the ball is within the basket) is basket interference, but hitting the backboard only appears in the rulebook as a technical foul.

NCAA Rule 4, Section 5, Article 2 defines Basket Interference.

a. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or
within the basket;
b. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has
the ring as its lower base;
c. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before
it enters the cylinder; or
d. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring
returns to its original position.

Hitting the backboard is actually listed as a technical foul, rather then basket interference.

Rule 10, Section 6, Article 1.g

Intentionally slapping or striking the backboard or causing either the
backboard or ring to vibrate while the ball is in flight during a try, or
while the ball is touching the backboard, is on the basket ring, in the
basket net or in the cylinder.

I think that should be changed. When the backboard is hit hard enough to cause the rim to be vibrating when the ball hits it, that should also be basket interference.

They showed a slow-mo replay of when the FSU player slapped the backboard on Lighty's layup, and the ball was most definitely in the cylinder. It should have been called.

heck, i think the better (if not appropriate) call would have been a technical foul. when is grabbing the rim not intentional?

Why not call both? Award the basket and call a 'T', and guys would be careful not to smack the board or yank on the rim.

Saw my first game. Boy, am I excited. The 'fresh legs' of Sullie and Thomas combined with the savvy of Diebler, Lighty, Buford and Lauderdale will prove great. Down the stretch, Lighty elevated his game when FSU made their push, and when Sullinger got back in, he wanted the rebounds, which is all about desire. Probably the most impressive of the newcomers (at least to me) was Craft. He messed up a couple of times, but I'd rather see someone stumble while trying, but at least he was in there trying - hard. Pretty poised for a freshman, but so are Sullinger and Thomas. Great blend out there, but upon reflection, kinda expect that from David Lighty. To me, I was happiest (OK, right after the aircraft carrier ((Oden)) ) when he committed, and I'm certainly glad he stuck around. Hope he has an opportunity for a pro career.

Anyway, the blend of the team is impressive, and was happy to see the Bucks on TV and withstand a pretty good push by Florida State, and then pull away. Great victory. Guess it's time for basketball! I'm glad for the young 'uns to have such great seniors to show them the ropes. Hope that Sullinger sticks around more than one, it'll do him well.

First off, I'm glad we can play that poorly and still win like we did. BUT...Sullinger needs to go up with the ball quicker or dish it out. Not just this game, but I've noticed this becoming habitual. Sully gets a ton of his shots blocked, or the ball stripped on the way up. He waits for about 3 guys to converge on him and then goes up when he has no chance. When he goes one on one or even right before the 2nd guy can double down on him, he is golden. However, there were many times he would have 3 defenders surround him...which means 2 defenders on our other 4. Get it out to the perimeter.

Craft is getting too confident passing the ball but so was everyone. We need to quit throwing the ball around like the Globetrotters. WAY too many careless turnovers. FSU plays good defense but that is the point...we could throw the ball around like that in all our other games but come Big Ten season, we will have no such luck against good defenses.

The pluses...Thomas is such a stud around the basket and hustles his butt off. Hopefully he is ok from that fall. Bufford had an off game and fouled out early...and we still managed. Craft doesn't seem to miss an open shot...he doesn't shoot much but when he does, he hits. Great defense as a team...FSU missed some shots but Lighty, Diebler and Craft all stood out to me.
