Weird game. NW got all the offensive rebounds because the shots they missed all caromed out 25 feet back to their guards.

You have to win the ugly ones, and this one was as ugly as they get. 22-0 baby!

That was the biggest thing to me. Those long rebounds are pretty much a coin flip, NU got damn near everyone of them plus some pretty tasty home cooking and OSU was still able to win.

This game and the FSU game were ugly as hell but both show as much about this team as the Purdue game imo. Its easy to win on the nights when everything goes perfect for you, its really impressive to win on the nights when it goes perfect for the other guy.

Even before the game with NW i thought to myself that they would have to depend on the outside shot and then thier rebounds started going there way.
I was afraid of that plus i think we went cold at the free throws.

The game would have taken a turn for us much faster if we could have shot better at the foul line. I just wonder if the emotions from the Purdue game drained them a little. Things like that happen. One day you play good and then the next you wonder what happened.
Just like one poster said. Lets take the loss now if we are going to,rather than later down the road in the tournament. Then again games like now are needed to be dealt with for the future and experience.

The View from Section 113 I-7&8

Ok, so at the game with the fam for one of the kiddos birthday presents. Great day, easy drive up to NWU, park within 200 yards of the door... all's good, right?

Well, then we got in our seats and started watching warmups. I swear during warmups that I thought to myself, "well, if this is what playing loose is, then I hope it works." There seemed to be little focus and in contrast to the good guys, the NWU was the exact opposite. I just had a sinking feeling in my stomach that the $vbet with a 10.5 point spread was gonna be difficult.

The first half of the first half things were obviously close but a comfy 5-point lead for most of it. I think at one point NWU had something like 6-7 fouls on them and we had maybe 1-2... then all hell broke loose. Not sure what happened but the officiating at some point just went bad... like really bad. Again, without rewatching the game it felt like they would miss something at one end and then call the guy for something at the other end. It could have just been me, but that's how it felt. I'm pretty sure that I did see one of the refs punch Thad in the face three times and then another ref call a charge on Thad. Yes, it felt that bad in the stands.

Other observations:

-- Not exactly sure what was going on with Diebs today. He didn't really seem to move well without the ball.

-- This team is very good... very very good, but it feels like at times they loose / lack the desire to go for the kill.

-- DL driving the lane against a guard was pure awesome. Loved seeing the big man put the ball down on the floor and move like that. Loved it.

-- The intentional foul on DL was pure BS.

-- JS is a man among boys. It will be very interesting to see how far this team with go with him in the next couple of years.

-- AC is a keeper. NWU fans around me all were talking good things about him. I tended to agree.

-- The way NWU dragged out each posession and then started to play at 15 seconds on the shot clock sucked. I hated watching that game. As posted earlier, "I'd rather be punched in the face..." I have to agree. Do not like.

For those of you who were not at the game, I'll say this about their student section. They were loud and kept it up the entire game. Not always classy with some of the things that they were saying -- since it was about the Refs I honestly agreed with the sentiment -- but still not very classy. The NWU student section should have gotten a 6th man award today.

Finally... yeah, not a pretty win for sure... but a win nonetheless. 22 right? 22 and 0? For anyone who was pissed after this game remember how many favorite & ranked teams went down again today... was it like 7? Note that I said "went down again." Count me as damn happy to still see that 0 under the L column.

Go Bucks!

Survive and advance as they say. I don't think the Buckeyes adapted well offensively in this game. With the close guarding by NU on the perimeter and the heavy calling of touch fouls by the officials, I'd have like to have seen Craft, Lighty, Buford, and maybe even Thomas dribble driving and getting to the line all game long: Defensively, I don't know that some at least one man full court pressure or half court trapping would have worked, but Id have like to have seen OSU try it few times just to get them out of the comfort zone.

I don't agree. If you look at the replay Lauderdale looked straight at the NW player and instead of boxing him out he stuck he elbow in his throat. Not only was it the proper call but after what happened to Shurna in NW's last game it was the only call the refs could make.

Lauderdale just had a brain freeze and did the wrong thing. Fortunately, Ohio State survived the ensuing 7 point possession that his error caused.

I anticipated a let down game after Purdue - and got it in spades. This was a classic trap game against a system - not against athletes.

There was no flow to the O - credit NU.

Diebler simply disappeared with little discernible effort to get him into the game.

NU got a freakish number of long rebounds.

Sullinger was mugged the entire game with relatively few calls.

Officiating overall was - bizarre?

NU put everything in the hoop when it counted down the stretch.

Seven - count 'em - seven point possession that totally changed the flavor of the game at that point.

One for five from the line when we could have put it away.

Pretty much everything that could have led to an upset happened in that game.

And we won.

Who's next?

Oh, and there are only two teams in the Big Ten who are less that four games behind the Buckeyes - and they play one another Tuesday.

The most telling stat:

With sharpshooter John Shurna on the sidelines thanks to lingering concussion symptoms, NU coach Bill Carmody decided to bust out Notre Dame coach Mike Brey's "burn" offense. The Wildcats played Saturday's game at a glacial pace, whittling the shot clock down to its final seconds on nearly every possession in an attempt to limit Ohio State's possessions and keep the game within reach.

It worked. At 49 possessions, this game was the second-slowest major conference contest of the season. Notre Dame's 48-possession win at Pittsburgh last week still holds that top spot.

Sorry, should have clarified.

... from my seat, the foul didn't look intentional at all.

I'll have to watch the game with the benefit of rewind to see. You could be totally correct.

agreed. officials just can't have players sticking their elbows into the throats of their opponents, especially when contact had yet to be initiated. i'll put it this way: had one of their players elbowed one of ours in the throat, we'd all agree that the correct call was made. at worst, we'd understand why that call was an option.

Just finished the game off the DVR, all I can say is thank God that Shurna wasn't playing tonight.
If Shurma would have played, I do not think that Northwestern would have played so slow. In most games games that they have played this season, they have scored close to 70 points with a couple exceptions. Carmody newly had no chance against Ohio State without Shurma and thus the slowdown. In an up-tempo game, which they would have played with Shurma, I think Ohio State would probably have covered the spread.

You might say Northwestern took a page from the game plan other Big Ten teams have used against the Buckeyes this season.

Then again, Northwestern wrote the book on the style of play that almost took down the nation's No.1-ranked team tonight.

It held the ball for almost the entire 35 seconds on the large majority of its possessions, thereby limiting Ohio State to 37 field goal attempts -- equaling the fewest in Thad Matta's seven seasons as OSU coach.
The Buckeyes shot 56.8 percent from the field and barely beat the Wildcats 58-57.

Northwestern, helped by 14 offensive rebounds (the Buckeyes had three), shot only 39.2 percent but had 51 field goal attempts.

"We decided we were going to control the game if we could with our offense," coach Bill Carmody said. "We just thought we had to limit their possessions because the team?s averaging about 80 points a game.

Especially without John (Shurna), we just thought we weren?t going to give the team a chance to win if we went up and down with them."

I don't blame Matta for being frustrated by NWern's style of play. I only watched the last 7:00, and I've never seen a team make pretty much ALL of their shots in the last 5 seconds of the shot clock like that.

I think the Buckeyes were getting mugged at certain points coming down the stretch, but I don't know what good it would've done to get a few more calls from the refs. The were missing FTs left and right. A lot of people have been waiting for the Buckeyes to lose a game or two because of poor FT shooting - hopefully this is one of them they were supposed to drop, but they somehow survived it anyway.

BTW, was Shurna out? In what little I got to see of the game ESPN didn't seem to mention it. :roll2:

One of the more amazing correlating stats in the NCAA tournament is free-throw percentage. The winner always has good/great free-throw shooting throughout the tournament.

It's time for these guys to start knocking them down from the stripe otherwise it will bite them in the ass at the worst time....
