You have to win the ugly ones, and this one was as ugly as they get. 22-0 baby!
-- The intentional foul on DL was pure BS.

With sharpshooter John Shurna on the sidelines thanks to lingering concussion symptoms, NU coach Bill Carmody decided to bust out Notre Dame coach Mike Brey's "burn" offense. The Wildcats played Saturday's game at a glacial pace, whittling the shot clock down to its final seconds on nearly every possession in an attempt to limit Ohio State's possessions and keep the game within reach.
It worked. At 49 possessions, this game was the second-slowest major conference contest of the season. Notre Dame's 48-possession win at Pittsburgh last week still holds that top spot.

Lauderdale just had a brain freeze and did the wrong thing. Fortunately, Ohio State survived the ensuing 7 point possession that his error caused.
agreed. officials just can't have players sticking their elbows into the throats of their opponents, especially when contact had yet to be initiated. i'll put it this way: had one of their players elbowed one of ours in the throat, we'd all agree that the correct call was made. at worst, we'd understand why that call was an option.Bill Lucas;1865941; said:I don't agree. If Shurma would have played, I do not think that Northwestern would have played so slow. In most games games that they have played this season, they have scored close to 70 points with a couple exceptions. Carmody newly had no chance against Ohio State without Shurma and thus the slowdown. In an up-tempo game, which they would have played with Shurma, I think Ohio State would probably have covered the spread.buckeyescott11;1865830; said:Just finished the game off the DVR, all I can say is thank God that Shurna wasn't playing tonight.
moreYou might say Northwestern took a page from the game plan other Big Ten teams have used against the Buckeyes this season.
Then again, Northwestern wrote the book on the style of play that almost took down the nation's No.1-ranked team tonight.
It held the ball for almost the entire 35 seconds on the large majority of its possessions, thereby limiting Ohio State to 37 field goal attempts -- equaling the fewest in Thad Matta's seven seasons as OSU coach.
The Buckeyes shot 56.8 percent from the field and barely beat the Wildcats 58-57.
Northwestern, helped by 14 offensive rebounds (the Buckeyes had three), shot only 39.2 percent but had 51 field goal attempts.
"We decided we were going to control the game if we could with our offense," coach Bill Carmody said. "We just thought we had to limit their possessions because the team?s averaging about 80 points a game.
Especially without John (Shurna), we just thought we weren?t going to give the team a chance to win if we went up and down with them."

I think the Buckeyes were getting mugged at certain points coming down the stretch, but I don't know what good it would've done to get a few more calls from the refs. The were missing FTs left and right. A lot of people have been waiting for the Buckeyes to lose a game or two because of poor FT shooting - hopefully this is one of them they were supposed to drop, but they somehow survived it anyway.
BTW, was Shurna out? In what little I got to see of the game ESPN didn't seem to mention it.
