Lee Caryer with an article that should give the Big Ten something to think about regarding player safety. He mentions the 1972 player assault at the Barn in Minny.

As a great leader once said, ?The right time to do the right thing is right now.? Is there any question that right and wrong is involved? Just define the two, and act. Everyone wants the incident to go away, and it will. However, the issue will remain. Eventually it will resurface. Will that be in a more dangerous way? Will someone do something? Right now.

Conflict avoidance - the problem better not resurface when the Badgers play the Bucks in the last game. I would rather not see that as a fan. Yell loud yes, be vocal yes, but keep the bodily fluids to yourself.

If I remember correctly, the SEC has a rule against storming the court after basketball games. Schools which allow it are fined. If so, it's a shame the Big 10 is behind in this area. Living in SEC country, I hate to admit they do anything better than we do.

That article is very well written, and I've considered blasting off an email to the conference about being lax on player safety both during and after games, but decided I couldn't do it objectively and without an obvious OSU bias. I would hope OSU will be taking every opportunity to remind students before and during the game to win with class. Nothing offensive directed at coaches/players/refs, and definitely no storming the court. There's a difference between getting into their heads and just being classless. Be loud and intimidating, but win with class. Remind them of what they suck at doing.

One small addendum though...just like Block-O did with Purdon't and their return of Coach Hope's stupidity, when the win can be comfortably agreed on, something along the lines of "Hey Coach Ryan, deal with it!" will hopefully be organized from the student section. Probably wouldn't have to be too loud considering the students are right behind the bench.

I watched the game... but one of the talking heads (orangebloods guy) down here on the radio apparently watched it too. According to him we have slow guards and this is why Texas is better than OSU (also mentioned that Kansas has the same issue)... Must be that Big 12 southern (Canada) speed... I laugh at idiots like that, I hope we play UT in the tourney.

look i'm all for being an homer but don't be an idiot about it.

We all know that year in and year out the team with the fastest guards wins the national championship.

For the record, this is what Bo Ryan said on the weekly Badger Sports Report show about the fans and the tOSU game. I've typed this off the BTN replay of the show.

"Our students were unbelieveable, They handled everything with a first class attitude, and the way they stormed the floor was perfect, because the security people put up the rope at just the right spot, plenty of distance between our students and the players from the other team. And, uh, the footage shows how great our fans were, and how excited they were to storm the floor, but also to make sure that they paid respect to the opposing team. So it's all right there, and it's kind of neat to watch how our people handled it, and I can't give enough credit to our students for their first class attitude."

While he's speaking, they're showing the footage of the post-game court-storming, and Diebler is completely surrounded by Badger fans. So I can't imagine what he's talking about with the "plenty of distance between our students and the players from the other team" comment. Now Diebler didn't complain about anything, but to act like the security people protected the opposing players is just wishful thinking.

Didn't mean to dig this up again, but I just stumbled on that show on the BTN, which tends to show those things a week after the local station originally airs them.
