Game Thread Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 (final)

...but when your worst loss comes to the #3 team in the country...there's a lot to be said? Who did Notre Dame's worse loss come to?

ND doesn't have a "worst loss"...both losses were by 3 points. If you want to split hairs, the USC loss was worse because they lost in regulation while ND was tied with MSU at the end of regulation (before losing in OT).

Notre Dame fans have crawled out of the wood work and are showing up everywhere now. Including online polls.

Going to Hilliard Davidson games, I'd see on average 10 brand new, right off the shelf Notre Dame hats per game. All of a sudden, everyone is member of the St. Brendan's Parrish Domer fan club. Fucking horrible.

Don't worry, those hats will be going right back into the closet in a few weeks time.

Beat The Domers...

Hello Bucks,

I didn't think I'd be back on the site until next July or so but I had to come over and say congrats on the Fiesta Bowl bid.

That being said, good luck and beat the ever living dog sh*t out of the Domers.

Carry on, and we'll see you in September.

I think this game will come down to preparation and coaching. JT is a proven, winning commodity in bowl games. Weis is unproven, but his success in the NFL postseason, success given time to prepare against SC, and the bowl success of other NFL-to-college coaches suggest that he will bring a good gameplan.

I can't wait to see this one.

This is our national championship game. It is the game where the most maligned team of Buckeyes ever shows what undeserved adversity has left behind. I believe that this game will go down in history as one of the most shining moments of a storied legacy.

It is not a popular opinion I know, but I believe that this game is going to be won in the trenches. I think our defensive line will create opportunities for sacks and continue to be impentrable to the run. I expect Kudla in particular to sparkle.

This is not to say that I do not expect our linebackers to show why they are the best in college football. They will, and the secondary will shine, but their advantage will start at the defensive line.

Mangold and his mates should have a special sendoff day. I think our offensive line will protect Smith for the pass and open up running opportunities for him, Pittman and the other backs.

Notre Dame is ranked #97 against the pass and #25 against the run (almost exactly the same profile as Iowa). I expect us to get the ball, hold the ball and run the ball but to mix it up with big play offense that opens opportunities, exactly as we saw against Iowa. I think the offense will be ready to fire on all cylinders.

I expect special teams to sparkle, after the letdown at TSUN.

This is a game about respect. It is a game about overcoming adversity. It is a game about character. It is a game that signals who will play for the national championship next year.

I know the computer ratings call this a 6-7 point Buckeye win, but I think a score in the region of 38-10 is possible.

Scarlet colored glasses, maybe, but that is how I see it.

Thanks, congrats on the Big-12 championship and an undefeated regular season.

And here's to you guys winning an NC for the first time in a while, while beating a team with a 34-game win streak (same as Miami's in 2002).

Trust us, that's a good time!!

Hook 'em.

Of course the results look like that. People that vote on those are not always Ohio State or ND fans of course and all of us buckeyes get a bad rep in being terrible fans and no one likes our team. It doesn't matter what those things say. As surprised as I was by the results, I still could care less. But damn, if they think that Weis is that much better of a coach than Tressel (62.4% Weis, 37.6 % Tressel), then I think they are freakin crazy. They are both very good coaches, and I cannot believe the numbers are that off.

I don't think Tressel has nearly as much national respect as he deserves. I'm not sure how much this comes from people hating tOSU program though. I think fans just naturally like offensive minded coaches and teams. Plus I think fans are quick to forget about Tressel's success in big games due to the Texas and Penn State losses this season. On top of that add the fact that Weis has 3 SuperBowl rings, and the results just really aren't that surprising. It's an NFL world we are living in, no doubt about that.

The only thing that pisses me off about this situation is this

Even if the tOSU blows out Notre Dame Tressel will get almost no credit. Instead you will hear things like tOSU had more talent, give Weis a few more years, etc. I wonder what it will take for Tressel to be considered an elite coach outside of the state of Ohio.

Quinn's passing has been impressive, but we've faced up against passers as good or better in Vince Young, Stanton, Banasez and Robinson. I don't think Quinn's faced another defense as good as ours, not in Michigan State, Tennessee, Washington or even USC. I don't think that Notre Dame can run on us if Texas, Penn State, Michigan and Minnesota couldn't.

I feel like it could get ugly early unless our special teams have another Michigan, in which case we could loose to Notre Dame just as we almost lost to Michigan and Michigan State despite being the obvious better team.

I disagree with the assessment that those QBs mentioned above are as good or better than Quinn as passers. Fact of the matter is, unlike Young, Stanton and Robinson, Quinn is going to make his money in the NFL as a great pure pocket passer. While those other guys make as many plays as Quinn, they do it with threat to run or pass. Defenses have a better shot at limiting their effectiveness by taking away their scrambling abilities by playing a strong front. The same can't be said with Quinn. If we can't get the heat on him, he is going to sit comfortably in the pocket all day long with two 6-5 220 4.4 WRs to throw to and be able to complete his share of passes. Ohio State is going to figure out a way to shut down ND's running game early and Weiss knows that. So don't be surprised if he comes up with a passing attack to attack OSU's aggressiveness and possibly confuse the Buckeyes. We better be ready guys.

Heard on the 6:00 news....line for the game:

Bucks by 4.5

Really surprised at this one, to be honest. I was almost positive ND would be favored. No disrespect to ND for this years season, but they have lost the last 7 or so bowl games (right?). Maybe the "Give Weis a month to prepare for a game" adage didn't pan out with vegas?

Opened at 6.5. It'll end up being near even, is my guess, since the line is a reflection of wagering activity and not how much any given team should win by (in terms of some kind of reasoned analysis.)

Agreed, and he never gets much credit which is complete bull. If Notre Dame were to win this game, I don't know if I could handle all the crap they would build Weis up to be. Good for him, he's a good coach, along with many other college football teams that have good coaches that have also coached in the NFL and what not. Tressel plays a different game, and many people don't agree with his coaching strategy, including many tOSU fans, but you know what, it works and he wins football games because of it. The pure reason tOSU picked Tressel up is because he knows how to win football games. In the end, it doesn't really matter who they give the publicity to, because we know that Tressel is a good coach and thats all that matters.

Damn right Texas fans - hook 'em. You have a better defense and are pretty close on offense (minus a Heisman trophy winner) but beat their ass and smell the roses.

My buddy who went to UT used to chant something when we were in the service. T-E-XXX, A-A, SSS TEXAS! Or something like that......
