Texas A&M advances to final of NIT tip-off

Donald Sloan scored 18 points and 16th-ranked Texas A&M held Washington without a basket for a key five-minute stretch in the second half to beat the Huskies 77-63 last night in an NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal in New York.

Joseph Jones added 17 points for the Aggies (5-0), who will play the Syracuse-Ohio State winner on Friday night in the championship game in Madison Square Garden.
"Our identity is defense," first-year Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon said. "The previous staff built this team around defense, and we did that in the second half."

Early games matter even if no one pays attention

November and December sometimes are treated like the leftover meatloaf of college basketball. It's hard to get the media interested while football is raging. It's even harder to get fringe fans excited.

People notice Gardner-Webb beating Kentucky and maybe even Eric Gordon scoring 33 points in his debut for Indiana, but why does it seem so few pay attention when North Carolina opens its season with a compelling game against Stephen Curry and Davidson? That is not an exhibition; it is not Findlay vs. Ohio State.

College basketball roundup: Defense helps Syracuse top Washington

No. 21 Syracuse 91, Washington 85 -- Freshman Donte Greene scored 25 points and Syracuse overcame shaky free-throw shooting in the final two minutes to beat Washington in the third-place game of the NIT Season Tip-Off yesterday in New York.

The Orange (4-1) led by double figures for most of the second half but were 5 of 12 from the line in the final 2:09.
Quincy Pondexter had 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Huskies (3-2).
BYU 78, No. 6 Louisville 76 -- Jonathan Tavernari made five three-point baskets and scored a career-best 29 points, and Brigham Young upset Louisville in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Tennessee isn't shooting very well tonight from the floor (39%), while Texas is pretty much lights out (61%)
