I believe Austin Scott has already put in his transfer request, and will start next week. And I also think Ty Willingham recruited most of this year's defense, so this season officially doesn't count, even though it is not before 1980 and the team isn't on probation, which are the normal criteria for Miami seasons not counting.

Nice to hear your thoughts on the matter. It is a mess in Cornhusker country. Navy guy is a good head coach. He has his team disciplined. However; military academy, If a new coach is coming in I hope it utilizes the players that the former coach has recruited for.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman made the announcement at a Tuesday news conference, 24 hours after firing Steve Pederson as athletic director. The 70-year-old Osborne returns 10 years after finishing a celebrated coaching career that culminated with three national championships in his last four seasons.


The epitaph, for better or worse, was set in stone on Nov. 30, 2003.
``I refuse to let this program gravitate to mediocrity.''
And with those words, then-Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson fired a coach -- Frank Solich -- completing his fifth nine-win season in six years.
In Big Red Country, that now passes for the good ol' days. And not even the return of Tom Osborne offers the promise of an enduring fix.

Maybe I was wrong comparing Nebraska to Notre Dame. Perhaps Arkansas is a more apt comparison?

OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne responded Thursday to reports that football coach Bill Callahan said the former coach was "trying to run things from Washington" while he was a U.S. congressman.

Callahan allegedly called Osborne a "crusty old [expletive]," according to former Nebraska football trainer Doak Ostergard, who is quoted in a book to be self-published by a student at the University of Nebraska.

In a statement Thursday, Callahan didn't deny the reported comments, but said he's had a great deal of respect for Osborne since he started coaching.

Ostergard didn't immediately return a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday. He told the Omaha World-Herald Wednesday that the book was accurate.

A lot of anti-Pederson stories coming out, mostly from ex-players who are being refused the degree of access to which they were accustomed - access they hope is now restored.

With Pederson leading the athletic department, members of Nebraska's 'N' Club – a group of former football letterwinners – said they often felt ignored and without a voice.
All-Americans and Hall of Famers would stroll the hallways surrounding the coaching offices and notice their photos had been removed from the wall and replaced by pictures of current team members – some of whom contributed to a 5-6 record in 2004.
They said they were made to feel unwelcome when they wanted to use the team weight room, and if someone like Peter or Outland Trophy winner Aaron Taylor wanted to watch a practice? Forget it.
"I'm a little different," said Rodgers, the Heisman winner. "I could still do some stuff, but even I had to push. And if I had to push, that pretty much tells you everyone else had no chance.
"It wasn't an accident. That's the way Steve wanted it to be. He wanted a whole new deal. He didn't want to use the support of former players and coaches, and that's a shame. These are the guys that helped build the program. That's not ever going to change. It's not right to shun them. They made a huge contribution."

Like Arkansas or like ND? Maybe it was uniquely like Nebraska, or a hybrid, Nebrarska Dame?

Tom, your program doesn't need an interim coach - you're not going to a bowl game.

Osborne designates himself interim Nebraska football coach

LINCOLN, Neb. - Tom Osborne is back as Nebraska's football coach - but just temporarily.

Osborne, already the interim athletic director, on Wednesday declared himself interim head coach until he hires a successor to Bill Callahan.

The interim coach designation lets Osborne visit prospective recruits away from campus, athletic department communications chief Randy York said Thursday.

The 70-year-old Osborne passed the NCAA certification test on his first try Wednesday, York said. Osborne went on the road to recruit Thursday and Friday, and the school sent a letter notifying the Big 12 of Osborne's new title, York said.

Like playing Defense?

As to Gill/Pelini... yeah... I really think these guys are both gonna make great head coaches someday in the right situation. But, to be successful, I'll be interested to see how well they recruit... By that I mean, I think they are both good enough football coaches... but... getting enough good kids to Lincoln is gonna be a challenge for anyone.

Nebraska never had that problem the previous four decades. Trust me, once Nebraska starts winning 10+ games a year again, Nebraska will be a place where a lot of top kids will want to play, and they were good enough to win 8 games in 2005 and 9 games in 2006 despite Callahan being coach.

Well, that gets to my point, for most of those 4 decades, you had 2 head coaches who were presumably above average recruters. I think an argument can be made... or... at least there was a perception that Nebraska was able to recruit the kind of players they needed on Offense because of the style of ball they played. (In addition to the 'advanced wieght room/training regimens, etc.) But, I agree they have done reasonbly well in the past. I think the catch 22 or your comment is-- "once Nebraska starts winning 10+ games a year again"-- I think that is a problem. And... not to knock what Missouri and KU have done... but... the Big XII isn't exactly a perrenially sexy division... so... I think, not only do they need to win 10+ games a year for a few years, they need to win some big games, too. (Getting routed by USC at home, not a good thing, for example).

On a serious note, I had heard yesterday that Osborne was going to contact recruits.

According to Gary Bargen, Nebraska's assistant athletic director in charge of compliance, without the "interim" designation, Osborne would not have been allowed to "correspond with prospective recruits other than those who visit campus."

I'm wondering whether any telephone "correspondence" occurred before AD Tom officially named himself "interim head coach". In fact, if I were a sports journalist in the Big 12 area, I'd be sending FOIA requests to to the University of Nebraska to get my hands on something that time-stamps the official announcement, as well as the office and cell phone records for Osborne.

Now I'm not going to do that, but I'm sure Jenni Carlson can handle that. :tongue2:
