If Osborne came back to coach the Huskers, my grandmother would be doing some serious cartwheels in heaven. We just buried her with her Tom Osborne-autographed football (she was Nebraska Class of '42).

OTL first report just said Tom Osborne is heading back to Lincoln to replace the Huskers recently ousted AD. Can't find anything on the web yet. Thoughts?

I wouldn't think that the school would want to hire anyone linked to the Nebraska football team's "alleged" steroid use. There are numerous articles on steroid use by Nebraska football players back when they were almost always national championship contenders. Here is an excerpt from one such article (July 18, 2002):

One of the authors of the proposal was Rep. Tom Osborne, R-Neb., much better known as the former head football coach at the University of Nebraska, where his team won the national championship three out of four years between 1994 and '97. In the letter, Osborne says, "Having been in athletics for a long period of time, I saw the devastation steroids can cause."
I, for one, cannot wait to hear Osborne detail this devastation. Anyone who pays attention knows that steroids abound in football and have for many years, NFL, college and high school. It has long been suspected by opponents and journalists, but never proven, that Nebraska was a hornet's nest of steroid use, turning willing, hard-working farm boys into 300-pound monsters who could bench 550 pounds and run the 40 in five seconds flat.
This much is certain: Nebraska ran a machine-like strength program long before any other school. The Cornhuskers' training table was more scientifically researched and arranged better than any other in the country, so much so that one rival Big 12 coach once told me.

Tom Osborne is returning to the university ... as interim athletic director. His hiring, which comes a day after athletic director Steve Pederson was fired, will be discussed at a 6:15 p.m. news conference.

"I feel responsible for the results of this program," Callahan said. "I feel responsible for a lot of things, good and bad. Ultimately, it lies on my shoulders to provide the results you have to provide."

I am not a Nebraska fan, however i do love college football. i am asking you to quit. your team is a disgrace, and your coaching is deplorable. it is quite painful to watch such dismal performance, and viewing the vastness of football ineptitude both on the field and on the sideline has been giving me nearly uncontrollable urges to gouge my own eyeballs out with a rusty spoon.. the only coach worse than you is that so called genius in South Bend, Indiana.

If so, here is what we have in the future: Coach's lack of job security scares off recruits. School fires coach. School hires new coach. Immediate results later turn out to be natural momentum of previous coach's work. Disaster. Three years later, fans still blame previous coach!!111!11

IMO, I don't see any parallels with Notre Dame. Solich was 9-3 when they let him go (stupid mistake); whereas, Davies had ND sucking hind tit quite well.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, TW had shown the ability to take struggling teams and make something out of them (i.e. Stanford). All Callahan has shown is that he can take someone else's players and try to be a surrogate coach. He did nothing of report at Oakland. He was riding Gruden's coattails.

If I were him I wouldn't quit either.

That would be on top of the 2.2 Million it costs to put Pederson out to pasture.

Total cost of upheaval, $5.2 Million.

Or roughly half what it would take to pay down Weis' gargantuan contract.
