  • Crean still working out scholarship issue

    Wednesday, June 6, 2012 - 9:26 pm EDT
STARLIGHT ? At the end of April, Indiana coach Tom Crean was asked about the scholarship issues facing his roster. The Hoosiers had 14 players scheduled to be on scholarship for the 2012-13 season, which is an issue because the NCAA limit for men?s basketball scholarship players is 13.

?Those things work themselves out,? Crean said then. ?They always have.?

Now it?s early June, and those things still haven?t.

All nine returning players are back in Bloomington for the summer. Two of the Hoosiers? five incoming freshmen ? center Peter Jurkin and forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea ? are on campus as well. The other three ? guards Yogi Ferrell and Ron Patterson and swingman Jeremy Hollowell ? are playing with the Indiana All-Stars this week but arriving on campus next week.

So barring some unforeseen snafu, there will be 14 players at Cook Hall next week all presuming that they will be playing basketball for Indiana on scholarship next season.

At least one of them will be wrong

    Disgraceful.

Matt Roth is nothing but a class-act. Kid came to IU when they were down. Battled injuries. Became their sharp-shooter. Graduated. Then graduated again with a Masters degree in his short time in Bloomington.

And he'll be left off the IU team after being a scholarship player for 4 years. I feel terrible for him, but he's remained positive and knows he'll either land somewhere or use his education he obtained in his time at IU despite being booted with one year of eligibility remaining. And he will be successful.

Crean is technically 2 over, but Matt Roth has been slowly left out of the discussion.

    Again- disgraceful. :shake:

Kid new it was coming and has known about this for a while. Family is well off and they signed off on it to help build a winning team.

Not saying it's the best way to go about doing things but this isn't as bad as people are making it.

Oh I know. Matt is fully aware and content with the situation. Has said all the right things and as I said is a great great kid.

Just very very rare for a kid to do all the right things and actually be somewhat of a valuable asset to the team for 3 years and then just be pushed aside in what was to be his senior year of basketball.

He'll do very well off the court, where he was going to end up inevitably. Still not cool in my book and Tom Crean needs to get a handle on his scholarships as they are over the limit for the foreseeable future.

Well said. I agree completely. It just shows the type of pride and commitment to a school that makes college so great.

IU is a basketball powerhouse. The B1G is much better and more relevant when IU is good. Crean has gotten them there. Now the question is can he take it to the next level and win a championship?

You probably could say that about a lot of student athletes in a lot of different sports but just because a scholarship is a one-year deal does not make it right.

Crean is already over the limit for 2013 and 2014 but Indiana is still involved with a number of other players for those years. I know the recruits have not signed letter yet but they have accepted Crean offers to play basketball.

Not only is over signing a problem at IU but so is over selling.

Re: Demand for Indiana student basketball tickets has apparently already surpassed the supply, which means Indiana will have to ration games. Indiana announced Thursday that 9,400 student tickets have already been sold for a student section of 7,800.

    Entire article: http://blogs.heraldtimesonline.com/iusp/?p=19462

However, a high demand for student tickets is probably a good thing.

About to increase the student section and cap it at 12,400 tickets.

    Capacity is 17,500.

They should probably play their basketball games in their football stadium because that age usually 1/2 empty during football season unless the visiting team's fans take the majority of the empty seats left over.
