Doyel: Tom Crean's fate no longer in Tom Crean's hands
Are IU fans disappointed enough to raise the $11 million needed to pay for his buyout?

"Creaning" is a thing. It's an insult, it's a verb, it's a way of life for Indiana basketball. It's the way the Hoosiers roster turns over almost every year, magically if you want to be naïve about it, with IU coach Tom Crean somehow finding a way to fit 14 or 15 scholarship athletes into the 13-player maximum. How does he do that?

Players leave early. Some for the NBA. Some transfer. Some academically. Some just quit.

Creaning. Google it. It's a word being used by Illinois fans, Michigan fans, Purdue fans, even Indiana fans. It's a word on UrbanDictionary.com: The practice of pulling a scholarship from a college athlete(s) in order to open up a scholarship for a more highly valued recruit.

Creaning is a thing, and it's an unsavory thing, and it's a reason — but just one reason, and not even the biggest reason — that Tom Crean is near the point where his future at Indiana is out of his hands.

Assuming he hasn't reached that point already.

Some would say he reached that point Tuesday night at Assembly Hall, where the Hoosiers — where Crean — were booed off the court by the few thousand IU fans who bothered to watch all 40 minutes of a 77-63 blowout loss to Iowa. Some would say? No need to hide behind a field of straw men. I'll say it myself:

Crean no longer has control over his future at Indiana.

Interesting. The writer of the article believes that he is out if the Indiana fans can come up with the money to buy him out. I did not realize that during the season he has been booed when he is introduced before games by a certain percentage of the Indiana fans.

I think it probably goes down to who they (IU) can get to replace him. If there isn't already a deal for his replacement, I don't know if they'd jettison "Clappy" and perhaps be stuck in-limbo. But if enough IU fans are upset, then they might do it regardless.

I was thinking the same thing in relation to Patrick Chambers (who could State Penn even get to replace him, since it's not a great job).

They have 2 commits for 2015 (#17 PF **** Juwon Morgan, #?? SF *** Ogugua Anunoby) and nothing else. That bodes well for the future

Well, not for the future of two or three of the 13 kids currently on scholarship at IU. None of them are seniors.

Spring Creaning is just around the corner, and some poor kids are going to find out the hard way that Crean changed the locks, since he doesn't even have the decency to tell his players face-to-face they're being recruited over.

IU is getting last minute visits from a couple 5 star big guys today- Thomas Bryant and Thon Maker. Huge for them right now.

Crean is going for broke. If he gets one of them, plus what they'll have returning next season- that is a very very good team. Or...maybe those kids are going to watch Izzo outcoach Tommy Boy in his own house.

edit- shaping up to be one of the bigger regular season games in recent memory around here. All eyes on the program, must win, and now 2 top recruits visiting. Interesting stuff.

I think I wrote here (or some recruiting thread) that this could be Tom's last year- except for Blackmon Jr. being the type of talent that saves a coach's job. Somewhat true, he's been good for IU, struggled lately, but really it's been Yogi saving the day. Crean isn't getting fired, though the noise is louder than it ever has been- people finally coming around to what I've said for 5+ years.

But, they should have a ton of talent back next year...for him to underperform with.

Is there something between Dan Dakich and Tom Crean?
No, haven't ever heard anything around these parts.

He mentioned on the telecast that people need to slow down on the Fire Crean craze- citing that 2 years ago they climbed to #1 and made back-to-back Sweet 16's. That said, Dakich is hard on every one and he doesn't back down from criticizing his alma mater, so he's vocally disagreed with Tommy's coaching plenty of times.
