Tom "L" Brady (likes soft balls)

Belichick Says He Never Wanted Brady to Leave NE: 'We Weren't As Good An Option As Tampa'

Next Sunday, the Patriots host the Buccaneers in Tom Brady's first game back in New England since he left the franchise in the spring of 2020.

As a result, during his weekly interview on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Monday morning, head coach Bill Belichick was not surprisingly asked about the departure of his former quarterback.

In one exchange, Belichick was asked about all the times over the years he said there was no quarterback the Patriots would rather have than Brady.

"It never changed,” Belichick said when asked if that perspective had shifted.

He was then asked if he had wanted to the team to re-sign Brady after the 2019 campaign.

“Yeah, well I think we’ve been through all the dynamics of that. There were a lot of things there that … he looked at his options and made his decision. We weren’t as good an option as Tampa, so I mean, you’d have to ask him about all of that,” Belichick said. “But that’s really … it wasn’t a question of not wanting him. That’s for sure.”

According to multiple reports at the time of Brady's departure, Brady never came to the franchise with a desire to return and New England never made an offer to him in free agency. Instead, Brady signed a two-year contract with Tampa Bay and promptly led the franchise to a Super Bowl title.

"Tom and I had a, I feel like a good relationship and a lot of production, obviously, while we were together. And I enjoyed coaching Tom, and he was a great player for us,” Belichick said Monday. “Sunday night, we line up across from Tampa—not just him, but the entire team. They’re obviously a good team. So it’s all about our team competing against Tampa’s team.

New book claims Tom Brady wanted to end his career with the 49ers; here's why it didn't happen

The 49ers apparently rejected Tom Brady

prism-template-1.jpg

In an excerpt from the book (via NBC Bay Area), Brady promised Welker that there would be "no free-agency tour, no bidding war, full stop; he would end his career where his love of football began, in scarlet and gold, allowing his parents to drive to (his) games for the first time since the 1990s."
.
.
.
So if Brady wanted to play for the 49ers, why didn't he end up in San Francisco? According to the book, it's because the coaching staff didn't feel like he would be much of an upgrade over Jimmy Garoppolo. After Kyle Shanahan heard about Brady's interest, he approached his offensive assistants. They watched every throw Brady made during his final season with the Patriots in 2019, and they just didn't feel like it was worth it to replace Garoppolo. Remember, after the 2019 season, Garoppolo was coming off a Super Bowl appearance while Brady was coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.

Ex-Michigan QB Tom Brady stokes rivalry with Ohio State prior to matchup vs. ex-Buckeyes QB Justin Fields

The two will meet on Sunday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers meet the Chicago Bears

Former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady has established himself as one of the greatest football players of all time after winning seven Super Bowls, five Super Bowl MVP awards, three NFL MVP awards and NFL records in touchdown passes and passing yards. There is one thing that he hasn't done -- start a game against a former Ohio State quarterback.

That will change on Saturday when Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Chicago Bears and rookie Justin Fields. Brady commented on the fact that he hasn't had a chance to bring the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry to the pros on Wednesday, and didn't miss the chance for a subtle jab at the end of his answer.

"I'm not gonna say anything too inflammatory about Ohio State. ... I'll have my time when we play Ohio State," he said. "This is Michigan State week, so those are the guys that I can kinda go after. That's interesting. Why is there not a lot of Ohio State quarterbacks in the pros? Lot of Michigan guys over here. Not a lot of Ohio State guys."

Actually scUM has 2 QBs on NFL rosters the same number that Ohio State has (i.e. Fields and Haskins), and 1 less if you count Joe Burrow.

Tampa Bay: Tom Brady, Starting quarterback (2000)

Kansas City: Chad Henne, Second-team quarterback (2008)

"Tom Brady's been in this league a long time, and it's just awesome to see him still playing when he doesn't have anything else to prove," Fields said Wednesday. "I mean, he's won six, seven Super Bowl rings. So just seeing him still playing without anything else to prove, I mean, that just shows you how much he loves the game. So, of course, he's a great quarterback and will most likely go down as the greatest quarterback of all time, in NFL history."

Once again. _ichigan took the guy that would go on to generally be seen as the greatest QB, if not the greatest PLAYER in NFL history, the QB who would re-write the record books and develop him into an average college QB and eventual 6th round pick. In true DFBIA form, they're proud of this.

To expound a bit on this - this would be like us having Craig Krenzel* go on to become a record setting QB with SB rings spilling onto his second hand. If that happened, I think most of us would say "man, he's that good and all we got out of him was about 175 yards a game? WTF, man?

* - of course, he did win a NC, so...there's that.
