HOT OFF THE PRESS: TOLEDO GAME POSTER

202203-toledo-game-poster.jpg

Sam Harachis pays homage to "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" in this week's game poster. The 1964 film is considered one of the greatest comedy movies ever made.

Conclusion
Ohio State has played two solid football games so far, but each performance has been far from perfect. Toledo provides an opportunity to finally put together a game that the Buckeyes can be proud of at all three levels on both sides of the ball. The talent Toledo has shouldn’t present a lot of challenges for the Buckeyes. If they do not take Toledo seriously, the Rockets have enough talent to do damage.

The Buckeyes made a lot of mistakes last week defensively, but only allowed 12 points when it came down to it. Toledo brings a short list of the challenges they present, but that short list can be neutralized with disciplined, responsibility football. On offensive side of the ball, the Ohio State offense will once again need to be on its best performance. The receivers have a huge opportunity against a secondary that does not have the talent to keep up the Buckeyes’ receivers. If the Ohio State offense can find balance between the run and pass, they should have no problems moving the ball against Toledo.

This game is a huge step up from last week’s opponent in Arkansas State. They do not do anything overcomplicated offensively or defensively. If Ohio State stays disciplined on both sides of the ball, they should take care of business. Toledo is the most talented team in the MAC. That goes a long way, and if Ohio State makes mistakes the Rockets can make the game interesting. If the Buckeyes can accomplish winning a game mistake free, it would be a significant step forward for Ryan Day’s team heading into conference play.

Geez you'd figure we were playing ttun this week the way everyone is hyping Toledo.

I'm guessing most of them are looking at statistical rankings which Toledo shows very well in. Not taking into account opponents is where those folks are falling short. Still, ND had some success running the QB at times and it's the area I'm most concerned with against this Defense right now. Hope Coach Knowles shuts that concern down early and often.

Toledo is the ultimate underdog MACtion blue baller. They’ll play some better, more talented teams tough but can never seal the deal. Like last year vs ND. Usually their defense is the downfall. Except when they beat Michigan. That was, and still is, hilarious.

Not saying it's a worry, but the Rockets DO have something of a history of taking down some "Big Boys" over the years. Bitch-slapped Penn State in Happy Valley, scUM, Pitt ( when they were top 10) Arkansas and Purdue among them.

ya think?

I mentioned previously that Toledo, who is #2 in pass efficiency defense, has something in common with #1 in pass efficiency defense (Tulane): they’ve both played UMass and a bad FCS team.

So is UMass last in the nation in pass efficiency offense because they’ve played the juggernauts that are the Green Wave and the Rockets? Is there anyone, anywhere who believes that?

or maybe, just maybe, perennials powerhouses Tulane and Toledo are leading the nation in Pass Efficiency defense because they played UMass.

How bad is UMass?

They managed a lower pass efficiency against Tulane and Toledo than either of those teams allowed against their bad FCS opponents.

How bad is UMass?

Their PE was negative against Tulane. I don’t think the Silver Bullets have ever held a team to negative PE. That’s a rare feat against ANY defense. It would be hard to do against the Rams.

How bad is UMass?

It is entirely possible that the WORST thing you can say about the hilariously, historically horrible Hawkeye “offense” is that they are the ONLY team in the country with a PE that isn’t DOUBLE what the Minutemen have managed. Think about that for a minute. Iowa’s PE is below 70. Their PE is more than 30 points higher than UMass’ PE, and EVERYONE else has AT LEAST DOUBLE the PE that UMass has. Everyone, in every conference.

That article touting Toledo’s defense’s ranking without context isn’t just lazy writing. It’s lazily making a point that is going to be proven very, very wrong very, very soon.

Respect the Rockets all you want. Their defensive rankings are going to be nothing but a huge, smoldering crater after Saturday night
