what do you guys think of nfl teams having to interview a minority canidate?

on one hand its so wrong to have to bring in a guy for show
but
it opens up doors for guys to get legit chances and break up the good ol boys club or stereotype of it.

the other thing to note is look at who the canidates for coach of the year are. lewis, smith, and dungy.

I don't like them being forced to interview a minority candidate... however I dont' see anything wrong with the CoY ballot.
no i wasnt saying the coach of the year ballot had anything to do with that kind of stuff. but its a point to be made that two of the guys have been hired in the minority interview era.

I think, unfortunately, it may still be necessary. There are not a lot of black candidates out there that have experience as a head coach. And if you look at the major coaching candidates for each NFL opening, the majority are other NFL coaches who were fired or white college head coaches.

It's not as rare as it used to be for an assistant to get a head coaching job, but teams would still prefer someone who has been a head coach because of the experience making executive-type decisions. And if you're a black coach, chances are you're an assistant.

Or maybe I'm just completely wrong, and there should be an NFL rule that for each opening, at least one assistant with no head coaching experience gets an interview. That would be a more race-neutral approach. So I guess I would go with that then. Shit, I don't know. Touchy subject.

I think there still is a bias that many do not want to admit. I'm not sure whether forcing their hand is the way to solve it, tho.

I gotcha jo. that is a very valid point, and he did it with the bengals for crying out loud

Its PR.

Those guys on that list were getting jobs with or without the "required" interview.

I think that the success of Lewis and Dungy is helping...I think moreso is the amount of quality minority coordinators out there. There seems to me, at least, to be little resistence to appointing or elevating a minority to a coordinator or assistant head coach spot compared to what there used to be, and so now the amount of quality minority candidates will skyrocket. I am not in favor of the rule, to the extent that if the Redskins wnat Gibbs, or the Giants want Parcells back, or whatever, and someone agrees to go there, I don't think interviews for the sake of interviews is very productive. However, if it is limited to requiring interviews so that the candidates get out there, and does not attempt to force a decision in any way, I see nothing wrong with it.

I think the problem in college football is infinitely worse, and the rich alumni who control those decisions will be a hell of a lot harder to overcome than the businessmen who own a franchise and want to win to make money.
