weve had this before but this was the topic at lunch today

what players who are currently playing do you see yourself as telling your grandkids you saw play. we got on the topic as we talked about baseball and my grandfather telling me as a five or six year old about the 27 yankees

this discussion is limited to current players

football: orlando pace, the most dominatin college player i ever saw
baksetball: lebron, coined the savior of the nba at what 16, hasnt lived up to that hype yet, but has been awful close...
baseball: bonds, the controversy and clout he creates is unmatched currently
hockey: forsberg, plays hockey like the hick from french lick played basketball...

all time

football: john elway, saw him play in college. wow.
basketball: wilt, close hard to pick between chamberlain/wilt/kareem and mj
baseball: mcgwire, i dont like baseball but i followed the sosa, big mac chase intently
hockey: #99

Nick Rash. I can tell the grandkids all about talking hockey on the internet with him.

Current:
NBA - Lebron James, Shaq
NCAA BB - Greg Oden
NCAA football - Troy Smith - may not go down in history with some other all-time great college football players, but in OSU lore.....

All-time:
NFL - Barry Sanders - I could watch his highlights for days and never tire of them. Just incredible.
NBA - Michael Jordan
MLB - Ozzie Smith

Props on the Forsberg JO

I cannot think of one athlete in the past 10 years who I have enjoyed watching control a game more than him.

One of the very few players in any sport that I buy tickets to go see just to see him play.

Mario was the same way, back in the day.

Saw Gretzky a couple times in Pittsburgh when I was younger.

Other impact athletes,

Tiger
Jack - Late 80's and on, even though he was past his prime.

Akeem Olajuwan - most dominant college performance I have ever seen

Baseball:
Griffey
Bonds
Roger Clemens

Hoops:
Magic
Jordan - Saw him score 63 on the Cavs one night, unbeleivable

Michael Schumacher
Earnhardt (GRHS:wink2: )

In person:

Steve Yzerman for Hockey, although I'm sure I'll tell my kid about Gretzky, Messier and Forsberg too....although I never had a chance to see Messier in person.....

Cal Ripken Jr for innumerable reasons, but mainly the way he played the game....

Joe Montana and Deion Sanders for the NFL...

The 2002 Nat'l Championship team to include Scott McMullen (who hit a homer off of me in 1998 that still hasn't landed yet).....

Troy Smith and the man he became...

Ted Ginn and the playmaking abilities he brought to the table....

AJ Hawk for obvious reasons as well....

All-Time (people I haven't actually seen play in person, but watched a lot of their games)

Michael Jordan

Tiger Woods

Jack Nicklaus

Rodger Federer (he might be the best tennis player ever)

i agree on foppa, to me he is almost unmatched. i compared him to bird for one reason, he can beat you so many ways. on his own, by making all of his teammates better and in som many fashions, he could control the game. forsberg maybe more flashy than bird, but thats the best "american" i can compare him to for everyone. even at this point with two bad bad ankles and his groin, id pay face value on any seat in nationwide to watch him play. not many players in any sport can i say that about.
