Time to get our act together!

This is mostly for the 'old timers' -

For the second time (that I know of) Clarity has made a post calling for us to clean up our act (See Admin section). When I read it I was angry - and ashamed. I watched it happen, knew it was happening, and did nothing about it.

This board was put together as a labor of love and with a great deal of hard work. It was done as part of a vision that Clarity had for a board where folks who shared a love for OSU football could meet and discuss. At least twice now we have collectively allowed it to become something else. There is simply no excuse. Why didn't I or one of the other long time posters step up before Clarity had to do it? It is just so wrong.

Those of us who appreciate what we have here also have two obligations. The first is to consider what Clarity wanted this board to be every time we make a post and to make sure that post doesn't harm that intent. The second is to challenge posts by others that go against that intent.

I for one have not lived up to those obligations - but I intend to start. I am a mod for nuts sake and I haven't changed or moved a single post!

One problem with making sure this board lives up to its standards is to make sure we all know what those standards are. (Clarity has posted his intent for the board elsewhere.) If it isn't clear I invite discussion on that topic here.

I have some ideas on that myself, but don't have time to go into them right now. However, I do know that we have a Romper Room where 'almost anything goes'. So we can still drop the Fbomb as a form of punctutation and talk about almost any topic we like - just keep it in the Romper Room!

I sure would like to hear from some of the other old times on this one.

Are we allowed to cuss in all of the forums except the Recruiting one?

One of the big selling points of this site was that you could use "colorful" language and not suffer any repercussions.

Seems to me that the tide is turning.

Make the whole site a Romper Room if you want but I think people will be upset if you can't use the "F-Bomb" every now and then if you get really pissed.

BTW - I'm not sure who the moderators are for open discussion, but from here I am going to go move a particular thread to the Romber Room. If I am stepping on someone's toes let me know. I think one of our guidelines should be that any mod can move any thread to the Romper Room if it crosses lines.

Oh8ch,

I think that is definitely fair.

Also,

It seems to me that some of the most frequent and "well-known" posters are some of the worst offenders.

If we see them getting away with calling someone a "douchenozzle" or whatever, then we think it is OK.

If they want a more fan-friendly site, then some of the senior moderators need to lead by example.

Thump I'd say you are reading into Clarity's post too much. He wasked for all of us to be responsible for our own words and to self-police the site. The recruiting forum is a big no no in terms of cursing, anti-OSU/JT stuff, or trashing a kid.

Other than that, just be responsible for your words in the other forums. I've had a few guys ask me about the needless cursing, but that is why the language filter is in place. I've had others ask about the combative nature of a few, well that is what ignore is for and that is also a damn good reminder to think andhave your facts straight before you post. I made the Derby/colt mistake last week or so, of course someone notices my stupidity and drills me for it. It was a well-deserved humiliation....think before you post.

We should probably tone down the language a little bit, but I don't really think that is what Clarity is referring to...except, of course, in the recruiting forum. I think all here need to make a conscious effort to post related topics in related forums, and to stop the "threadjacking", instead trying to stay on subject. Personal attacks need to be toned down, but we still should "police our own", so to speak. I know I'm guilty of a lot of this, but my impression is that Clarity isn't as worried about the f bomb as he is other things. I could be wrong, and Clarity, feel free to tell me if I am. I believe we should tone down the language thing, and I will personally.

I usually don't use "colorful language" except for todays example when Jabba the Moore blamed Ohio for Bush winning and wished ill will on our Buckeyes. I also sinned by calling out the SOB that dinged me and called me a redneck for wanting Jabba dead.

And you deserved it. :wink2:

(The best part of that was when that dude told me that I was wrong and males of the equine species were only called "colts" before they were yearlings and that they were "horses" when they ran the derby as 2 year old.... Boy that wasn't close)

I don't want to step beyond my boundaries because I realize I'm not exactly a long standing member of BP, but I have a few observations. In the short time I have been here, I have noticed a moderate to high level of change in what is considered proper etiquitte for the public forum boards. I appreciate the freedom of speech that the board stands for, but there is a difference between the occasional "colorful" rant and an entire thread littered top to bottom with name calling/explitives. I have also seen (and been a part of) personal battles between individuals that serve no meaningful purpose to the board. I think that this all demonstrates evidence that the line has been slowly pressed to the point that, while we don't see the deterioration immediately...when you look over time, things have changed. You don't have to look any further than the "Hot Ladies" thread to realize that the line on sensually clothed and nude has been driven to the Romper Room edge.

I am not condemning anyone, because I am as guilty (if not more) for a lot of problems that we can see creeping in. I think it is important (like Oh8ch said) we get control of this problem while it is still small. We need to look at our posts before we send them and ask ourselves not "is this breaking a rule?" but instead "does this better the quality of the discussion?" and does the discussion itself offer benefit to the site. Because of the freedom Clarity has offered us, a lot of things are "legal", but not all of them edify the site. With this freedom, we have a responsibility to police newbies and train them up in the way we were trained. We need to lead by example.

I apologize for allowing the content of my posting to deteriorate in the past few weeks and I plan to rectify the situation. This post is aimed at no one person more than myself. I can only hope that others take it as my humble attempt to be critically introspective...and maybe they will do the same.

Thank you,
-OilerBuck-

I'll do my best for my part to maintain decorum as well, especially when not in the Romper room or political forums.

I will say only this to Clarity's post, other than we need to respect all of his suggestions: anyone joking about breast cancer (I didn't see it) will hve me to deal with.
