Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

I don't even know, it seems to me like Beck is sitting around in the booth wringing his hands and muttering to himself "The other team will never suspect my cunning plan of having each QB run the other QB's plays, mwahahaha," and then wondering why the offense looks like crap.
I pictured him sitting in the booth hitting the "Ask Corso" button over and over again.

E + R = O. We've had an unpleasant event. How Urban responds to it will determine the ultimate outcome over the next several years. It's appropriate to be frustrated because it all seems like a giant waste of a golden opportunity, but there is nothing in Urban's track record that suggests to me that the Buckeyes will not climb to the top of the mountain again within the next few years. I am pretty sure that whatever he's thinking or doing in reaction to the event, it's a lot less bitchassed than what many of the fans and, unfortunately, at least a couple of the players, are doing.

I read this thread from front to back here the other day.

It went from:

"Youngstown Ohio native comes back. Yay!"

to

"Shush, Nebraska fans. Look who he had to work for"

to

"Meh, he's not calling the plays, it's Warinner's fault"

to

"THIS MAN MUST BE RUN OUT OF TOWN BY NIGHTFALL."

:rofl::slappy:

Don't expect to hear from him the rest of the year in the media. If he does, it's going to be because you guys beat scUM.

I think more than a few of us had reservations based on his track record, but passed on posting them based on the afterglow of the NC, and the general mantra of "trust the coaches" (specifically Urban and Warriner). I didn't like the hire (mainly because I feared him as a QB coach), but thought that he'd be competent enough as an OC with Urban's supervision and Warriner's OL coaching. While some were more positive, I think that many gave the benefit of the doubt and just didn't voice reservations. Obviously, the "really? Well OK, here's hoping" attitude was insufficiently negative.

Many Buckeye fans have a movie playing in their heads, in which they're Michael watching Beck's contract figuratively go fishing.

This.

1st quarter I told myself "OK, we're feeling things out"
2nd quarter, "alright, MSU is here to play, but just keep running Zeke"
but when things not only didn't improve, but got worse for the 3rd and 4th? Just so damn inexcusable. Cannot even comprehend it. Just a slow motion, 60 minute disaster.

Event (Herman Leaving) + Response (Hiring Beck) = Outcome (Largest mismanagement of a collective talent in possibly OSU History).

Urban has done many great things since getting here, and will hopefully do great things before he leaves. But if he leaves with one national championship in, let's say, 6 years, he will have failed. And he will have nobody to point to but himself. Withers and Beck ARGUABLY cost him two national championships. A non-broken secondary and they very well win in 2013 and a non-inept offense and they very well win in 2015.

I'm not sure how old you are, but tOSU went 33 SEASONS (1969 through 2001) without a national championship. It isn't easy and other teams have players who have talent and coaches who work hard too. Perhaps the sense of entitlement from such a large and vocal fan base is part of what causes players to lose some of the mental edge that they need when expectations are high, and maybe it's no coincidence that tOSU seems to win its titles when nobody expects them to do so. A coach who wins a national championship at Ohio State is a success. Period. I do think that Urban will win more of them here (I anticipate the next one coming from a disrespected and angry team in 2017 after a 3+loss season next year) and I will be disappointed if he doesn't, but it certainly won't make him a failure.

I disagree... it's not a failure to only win one every 6 years. Better than what Tressel had done and I don't think any of us consider him a failure.

He made a grave hiring error with Beck no doubt but if it continues the problem will get corrected. It's hard to win it all though and it'll be even harder now that there's a playoff system due to needing two Marque wins to close the national championship.

I will say though that Urbans losses are really untimely. I pointed out before but we've only managed 1 big ten championship in 4 season's despite his ridiculous record. Bottom line Urban is 2-2 against MSU but those two loses couldn't have been more impactful. He needs to find a way to beat the up state schools because if he does that we will always be in the thick of things.

When we lose with Urban it's with everything on the line which obviously blows. Still though give me a championship every 5-6 years and that's hard to be upset at

I'm not sure if you watch Urban Meyer, who was not at OSU for those 33 seasons you referenced, but he's won 3 titles in 9 years of being eligible (Utah and BG don't count since an undefeated season wouldn't get you in). If he wins one title in 6 seasons, at a school like OSU (better pedigree than Florida where he won 2 in 6 seasons), he under-performed. I wouldn't say majorly, but under-performed nonetheless.

If LBJ, arguably the 2nd greatest player in the history of the game (or can be when he retires) only wins two titles, is that not a failure? Or since he won two titles, is that not a failure since not everyone wins championships?

Tressel came to OSU from Div 1AA. Urban came to OSU winning championships at a 33% clip from a Div 1 school. If Saban won one title in 6 years at Bama, would that have been a great tenure? I'd argue no.
