  • What's the purpose of the tight bands players wear around their elbows?

I've heard some people say to stop sweat, others say to put some pressure on the tendons to keep them from swelling but my guess is to just make their arms look bigger b/c you don't really see many big-armed guys wearing them.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Seriously?

They're just sweatbands. Most players wear them to look cool, and, I would imagine, to gather sweat. I used to wear them myself. Nothing special.

    Why did you wear them?

Just for looks or as a sweat catcher?

Also, what about sweat from the elbows down?

Honestly, I just wore them because it was kind of a wide receiver thing. As far as the sweat thing goes, I really can't help you other than no one wears anything for it below the elbow. There is nothing significant about these armband things.

I've also seen players wear them just below their knees......what would sweat or lack there of below the knees have to do with anything?

I think that may be there for actual purposes... they have those "jumper knee" things that are supposed to help your knees by applying pressure. But overall I think most bands are just fashion.

I have had knee injuries/tendinitis in both knees and have worn the patellar straps that you're talking about for the pressure but I agree on the fashion conclusion with you because those sweatbands don't apply near enough pressure to provide any amount of support.

They can't gather too much sweat because they're so thin.

I've had this same question since I first noticed them popping up. At first I assumed it was just a fashion statement with team colors.

I found them to be completely ineffective at preventing sweat, since they always made that part of my arm way too fucking hot. That meant that I would sweat more in that area. I wore them a couple times when I used to play baseball, then I realized that they did absolutely nothing for me.

Then again, I sweat like a cold, glass bucket of ice water in 143 degree weather.
