Having used Percocet for an injury years ago I know they can send you buzzing, which is why a combination of pills including them would make me think twice about being out in the middle of the night. There's something missing from this story. Might he have been trolling the streets to satisfy his other seemingly-uncontrollable urges?

Opiate addiction is a serious. I'd imagine with all his nerve and back pain he's been taking them for a while now.
Off topic, a good film from Chris Bell of Bigger, Stronger, Faster fame about opiate addiction is "Prescription Thugs". It's worth the rental.
