A very respected source apparently says Mike Williams will be back with USC. The source broke out on the USC rivals premium board, so I can't confirm what the original post says. The free rivals site vouches for the source's credibility:

I'm not trying to flame, or say that BMW won't be reinstated, but I remember MoC making similar comments after some of his interviews with the NCAA folks.

It's always hard to predict what the NCAA will do.

In other news today at WeAreSC.com, it was announced that USC will 'recognize' their 1939 team as National Champions. They had two ties that year, and beat a Tennessee team in the 1940 Rose Bowl 14-0. FYI, that Tennessee team entered the Rose Bowl unscored upon for the entire season (yes, each of their regular season games was a shutout).

Almost all polls and college football sites recognize Texas A&M, who won every game including their bowl game, as the 1939 NC. A lot of USC fans aren't happy with the decision, feeling it's not worth the grief they'll receive. I agree with those USC fans.

edit - USC already recognized the 1928 title, although it's not generally accredited to them. Most historians give them 8 titles. It's nice that they don't claim the 2002 crown, don't ya think!

If Ohio State decided to recognize teams that were 1 bad game short of a real NC as the Champion, we'd be leading the country in titles right now by an enormous margin.

I knew the Pac 10 was ridiculous, but this is just plain sad on USC's part.

Actually, if both schools counted each year in which at least one service ranked them number 1, both USC and tOSU would have 18 NC's.

That's very lame. Did they just find out about the 1939 season last week or what? To me it just looks like a ploy to sell some more seats for whatever game they'll recognize it (probably at a halftime ceremony). What's next, the McDonald's value meal/ticket pack a la miami last year?

The only "services" that awarded the title to them in 1939 were the Dickinson System and Ray Bryne...not exactly well-known. As for claiming the 2002 title, if they can claim the title with two ties, what's to stop them from claiming one with two losses?

But back to Tim Jamison.

The latest info out of Ann Arbor is that he is going to qualify. John Thompson is the only kid who is in danger (and it's a big time danger) of not making the cut for the '04 Michigan class.

I don't really care about the title, but the discrepancy in polls is misleading. Dickinson was one of the few or only that factored bowl games into their championship. The others (or most) awarded titles before the bowls.

It is long overdue but the USC Athletic Department has finally recognized the last great Thundering Herd team, the '39 Trojans, as National Champions.

How good was the '39 Thundering Herd? They played in consecutve Rose Bowls, first against Duke, then against Tennessee, the only two teams in the modern era of college football to go through the regular season undefeated, untied and UNSCORED upon.

They beat Duke 7-3 in a Rose Bowl Classic, and thumped Tennessee 14-0 the next year.

In 1939 they decisively defeated Notre Dame in South Bend, something that wouldn't happen again for more than a quarter century.

They still hold the USC record for the fewest points allowed in a season 33...An average of 3.3 points allowed per game.

Per the legendary Howard Jones they were the best team he had ever coached.<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->

Back in those days both Tennessee and Duke were so good that both of them came into the Rose Bowl undeafeated, untied and unscored upon! USC took care of them both. The record of USC that season was 8-0-2.

methomps, I agree that the Dickinson poll is the key factor here. I had this very same discussion with a couple of USC fans on Bucknuts about 6 months ago. I wish I could remember the monikers, but both were very cordial, informed, and seemed to be somewhat connected to the USC program or alumni association. Basically they told me that USC was in the process of considering claiming the NC for 1939. After asking why, I was told it was mainly to honor the Thundering Herd team and what few living members of that team that still remain.

That is a rationale I can understand and sympatize with. I was under the impression this has much less to do with the Dickinson poll, although that poll is the only thing that lends credence to a claim of the NC for 1939. Ray Bryne is the only other poll to factor into the 1939 season and it is simply not prestigious enough to warrant any merit. So that leaves us with the Dickinson poll. While talking to the USC fans at BNs I pointed out that the Dickinson poll in and of itself is NOT enough to claim a NC. Even USC (or the media engine at USC) must agree with that thinking. USC has claimed titles from other years (most notably 1931) where Dickinson awarded USC the NC. If USC thought the Dickinson poll was prestigious enough on its own, they would have claimed the 39 title some 60+ years ago. My point in all of this was that USC can't claim that the Dickinson poll is enough justification by itself or they would have claimed it 60 years ago. They already recognize 1931 when Dickinson awarded them the NC (along with many other awarding agencies), to not claim the 39 title from Dickinson proves USC didn't think that poll alone was enough to claim a National Championship.

After explaining that to the USC posters, they somewhat agreed with this line of thinking. Basically saying that some in the USC community thought this was a long standing mistake by the media department at USC to not claim that title. Most think this is the right thing to do simply to honor a great team of the past, before all have passed away.

If indeed USC is simply honoring past heros I will give them a "pass" on this issue. Heck, look at all the teams that claim championships from less than stellar agencies (Alabama, Michigan, etc.). Even OSU claims 7 while most OSU fans only agree with 5 of those. However, I would have a difficult time if USC tried claiming the 1939 Championship simply on the merit of the Dickinson poll. Ganted, that poll is prestigious, but even USC has shown it alone is not enough. Either way you should prepare for lots of "feedback" from the rest of the college football community. Most will ridicule USC for this move.

Lets not forget about that great team from Cornell in 1939, Billingsley, Litkenhous has them winning the title that year!

Also its pretty funny but two of those services had USC as the NC for 2002!

Yeah, let's not forget all the "experts" who said that USC was "head and shoulders" above everyone at the end of 2002, and spent their time arguing about who would kick our ass worse, USC or Cryami. :crazy:
