Jim Thorpe won the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockhom, Sweden. After King Gustav V presented the gold medals and told Thorpe he was "the greatest athlete in the world", Thorpe famously replied "Thanks, King."

Correct. Patton received a low score in the shooting event, which dropped him to 5th overall. From my recollection of a visit to the Patton museum at Fort Knox, Ky, he maintained that he received that low score because one of his shots went directly through a previously scored hole from one of his earlier shots. If that shot had been scored, he would have received a medal. But it wouldn't have been a Gold Medal, as some web sites suggest. Thorpe won 4 of the 5 events.
edit - as BKB pointed out, these were actually 2 different 'pentathlon' events.
