Those struggling with mental illness

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • Below is an article from my hometown paper about one of my best friends who took his own life almost exactly one year ago today after a long battle with mental illness.

Included in the article are some of his diary entries he made while going through this illness. It really shows you the despair and pain that those suffering go through.

Some of John's best friends are members of BP, tyrus, chico1, r21p.

Just wanted to let people know that individuals fight this fight everyday and that it's not a character flaw, but rather a biological and physiological problem that most have no control over. I equate it to looking down on someone for epilepsy. Those with epilepsy have no control over their body when in the throws of it, the exact same applies to those battling mental illness.

All of us miss John dearly and hope his story can shed some light on mental illness and its affects.

I have significant highs and lows that I fight, but have a number of family members that have more serious issues. I am chemical free so I choose not to be medicated (though my wife thinks I should be). I deal with it fine.

I watched a show on mental illness and they made a digital a simulator that you would put over your head that re-created the sights and sounds of what a person with serious delusions experiences. It was scary as hell to think about going through your day under those circumstances.

It's a BP tradition that whenever somebody posts something of a personal or emotional nature, or talks about a loss, that they're given shit for it.

I'm taking a pass this time - good post, Thump.

Like JL said, one thing you can't hide, is when you're crippled inside.

Hope your golf tourney meets the mark of remembrance, scholarship development and understanding for which you are aiming.

You were the person I thought would respond. But I thought you'd say:

'The pussification of BP continues', since that's an old Thump line. :wink2:

Nah. It's a worthwhile and well-intentioned post. I saved my scorn for you.

I typically resist sharing personal stories, but this is something that I am also compelled to contribute to.

My mother suffered from Parkinson's disease and subsequently depression: she was very active before this disease took her ability to do so.

Just a few months ago, she also fell to depression and took her own life.

I share this story for two reasons:
    1. I will never again take someone's mental health lightly. We are trained to believe that mental health is a given, and that people will 'deal.' The truth is that when someone is going through a very tough time in his or her life, that person's friends and family must be vigilant, and they must be on the lookout for the disaster that my family and I faced. No one ever expects an event like this - it is unthinkable and terrible, and people who are not depressed cannot understand why a person would do such a thing.

What I'm trying to say is: if you are concerned about someone's mental health, please step in and make a difference.

    2. Since this happened, I encourage every one to value his or her family members. My mother and I were so close - and for that I am grateful. I have no regrets now, nor do I feel that I have 'unfinished' business with her. She knew always how I felt about her and how much I cared. But to those with strained relationships with parents, family, or friends: reconcile your relationships. The hell that I experience now would only be multiplied had I left words unsaid, or if I felt that I did not let her know what a wonderful person and mother she was. I know I know nothing about people's relationships with their parents - it is different and special for everybody. But at the same time I know that my sentiment must be shared by all who care for their parents.

Thank you, Thump, for bringing up such an important consideration.
