The true meaning of "Star" value?

VprHis

Get off my lawn, you hooligans!
HOKAY, folks, sorry to put this here, but I wasn't sure we really wanted current recruits to see it and think we don't value them. I was looking something up for the MSU board and thought you might appreciate a little analysis. I know there are a few gaps here and there, but I think this has a value regardless.

This is an analysis of our 2-deep (from the official site--not quite how it looks today, I know) correlated to recruiting rankings from Scout.com.

We put 3.5 star recruits on the field and kick the snot out of our competition. What does that tell you about recruiting??

Edit: sorry about the alignment... I'm too lazy to fix.

Oh, and uh... feel free to move, if it's more appropriate elsewhere.

Two Comments:
  1. It's just as well that you put it here. Because I go to the recruiting forum maybe once a month and seldom spend more than 10 minutes there.
  2. The reason that I go there so seldom is because I believe your primary point; which seems to be that recruiting is an inexact science. I believe there is more at work here though. We have good reason to believe that JT and his staff are better, not only at evaluating talent, but also at developing talent, than are most of the rest of the college coaching fraternity.

Yes, but how many programs that OSU plays average above our 3.5 or so in their recruiting classes? Other than Michigan and occasionally a bowl opponent, I'm going to guess, none. Of course the point that star ranking aren't the be all and end all of recruiting is obviously valid.

Interesting point of view from a Gator fan...

"the teams recruiting him wouldn't go after a guy ranked that low..... "

ohio state knows what they are doing....they probably take more three and two star prospects than anyone in the country and turn them into nfl players...the list is countless but some just from florida include michael jenkins, santonio holmes and chris gamble, all three star players who became first round picks...james lauranitis and malcolm jenkins, two stars from osu's d who will be first round picks, were also three star prospects...

These "stars" are given to players by people who have never seen them play a down of football. If the entire 2002 class had red-shirted, our top "STAR" players this year would have been Clarett, D'Andrea, and Zwick.

This has no reference point. What do other teams average?
Good point. I'd guess there are five to ten programs that have had a higher average star rating on their two-deep than OSU has had over the past six years. Maybe Michigan, USC, Texas, OU, probably at least 2 or three SEC schools (UF, LSU, Tenn?), maybe Miami, and FSU. And they've all had some pretty decent teams, but I don't think many would doubt your main point, Vpr.

Eh, it all grew out of a debate between some MSU guys about how they need a steady diet of 4-stars to get back on the winning track--you know, like OSU and all our 5-star guys... So I just did some quick math, and thought I'd share.

I think methomps should figger out exactly what USC averages... I'd have to guess they're as high as it gets (but what do I know?)

Maybe, but I wouldn't even know what depth chart to go with. The one from game one? From the last game? From on average?

One issue with the method of calculation is that it takes no consideration for experience. A 3-star in his 2nd year as a starter is going to be much different from a 3-star freshman (and probably better than your average 4/5-star freshman).

Guessing 3* for FB yields a total of 44 stars on O, an average of 4.00 for the offense.
A total of 46 stars on D, an average of 4.18.

8 of 22 starters were 5 stars.
