The pitching has been a major story so far for Ohio State. After today’s game, the Buckeye pitching staff has only allowed one run in the last thirty-one innings. That’s getting it done in the circle.

But there’s been plenty of offense too. Freshman Kaitlyn Coffman has been on fire, Lilli Piper is doing Lilli Piper things, and the team is getting big hits in big moments on the way to a 8-4 record to start the year.

Piper got things started Sunday with a solo home run in the first to put Ohio State up 1-0. The Buckeyes threatened with the bases loaded again in the third inning, but couldn’t bring anyone across the plate again until the fourth inning when Carley Gaskill and Ashley Prange both hit run-scoring triples on the way to four hits and three runs to make it 4-0.

Ohio State added one more in the fifth, and the Aggies finally scratched across a run in the seventh, but that would be all they could do, and the game ended in a 5-1 victory for the Bucks.

It was a highly successful trip out in Palm Springs for Ohio State. The Buckeyes went 4-0, scoring seventeen runs and only giving up one. There was a no-hitter in there, a grand slam, a slew of extra base hits, and a ton of fun.

Ohio State will head up to the Pacific Northwest next weekend for five games in Seattle against the likes of Washington, Seattle, Idaho State and Northern Illinois.

COFFMAN NAMED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After helping the Buckeyes to an undefeated weekend, rookie outfielder Kaitlyn Coffman received her first weekly honor as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Coffman’s big weekend at the plate propelled Ohio State to four straight wins, including three shutouts, as she batted .538 with 10 RBI, seven hits, two home runs, two runs scored and a 1.077 slugging percentage at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Among the tournament leaders, Coffman ranked in the top five in batting average, slugging percentage and total bases while leading the field in RBI.

The Visalia, Calif. native opened the weekend in notable fashion when she demolished a game-winning grand slam, the first of her collegiate career, against Army. Coffman held nothing back on Saturday, recording six hits, six RBI, a .857 batting average and 1.429 slug clip over two games. She started by going 3-for-3 with a RBI in a rematch with Utah before tallying a career-high three hits and five RBI with a 1.750 slugging percentage versus Duke. Coffman successfully reached base in every game and is on an eight-game streak.

Coffman was part of a Buckeye defense that recorded a no-hitter against the Black Knights and only allowed one run in 28 innings. Ohio State was one of three teams that went undefeated, the first time for the Buckeyes at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

BUCKEYES HIT THE ROAD FOR SPRING BREAK

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team is heading out on its longest trip of the season for Spring Break. The Buckeyes will play 12 games over 10 days with stops in Washington, Oregon and Arizona. The excursion kicks off this weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle. Ohio State will follow up with a doubleheader at Portland State next Tuesday (Mar. 10) before attending the GCU Invitational in Phoenix the following weekend (Mar. 15-17).

SCOUTING REPORT

Pitt snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday with a 14-5 win over North Carolina. The Panthers are 5-28 on the season and 3-18 in non-conference outings. As a team, Pitt is batting .237 with 194 hits and 97 RBI. Individually, Katlyn Pavlick is hitting .272 with 25 hits, 22 runs, 10 RBI and six home runs. In the circle, Abby Edwards has a 3-7 record and 5.33 ERA, having pitched 67 innings with 16 strikeouts.

The Ohio State softball team won its third straight game in a 5-2 extra-inning win against Pittsburgh (5-29) 5-2, recording 10 hits and four walks.

Early on, Ohio State thrived defensively, ending the first inning with a diving catch by freshman right fielder Kaitlyn Coffman, while senior pitcher Morgan Ray recorded two swinging strikeouts at the end of the second and third inning.

The Buckeyes got on board at the beginning of the fourth inning. Junior outfielder Andi Farrah doubled down the left field line, scoring sophomore outfielder Summer Constable.

In the fifth inning, Coffman homered to left center, her sixth of the season, extending the lead to 2-0

The Panthers soon caught up and tied the game with a two-run homer by senior first baseman Gabrielle Fredericks in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ray finished the game allowing two runs on three hits, striking out five in 5.2 innings pitched.

With the game tied heading into the ninth inning Ohio State senior second baseman Emily Clark hit a two-run homer over the left field wall. Freshman Ashley Prange extended the Buckeyes’ lead to 5-2 with another home run in the ninth.

Freshman center fielder Meg Otte was one of two players, along with Prange, with three hits in four at bats.

The win brings Ohio State to 21-10 on the year with a 5-1 record in the Big Ten.

Ohio State will start a three-game series against Rutgers. The first game will start at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a game at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.

OHIO STATE HANDS NO. 21/18 MICHIGAN FIRST B1G LOSS IN 2-1 WALK-OFF VICTORY

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team split its doubleheader against No. 21/18 Michigan on Saturday evening at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes fell 6-2 in the first game before clawing their way back for a 2-1 eight-inning walk-off victory to snap the Wolverines’ 17-game win streak. Ohio State (25-14, 9-5 B1G) handed Michigan (29-11, 11-1 B1G) its first Big Ten loss of the season.

GAME 1: Michigan 6, Ohio State 2

  • Lilli Piper and Emily Clark got the offense going on back-to-back home runs over left field for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. It was the second time this season the duo connected on consecutive home runs.
  • The Wolverines went ahead in the second, 3-2, with two RBI singles and a RBI sacrifice bunt.
  • Two more runs came across for Michigan in the third on Alex Sobczak’s two-run homer.
  • Ohio State threatened in the bottom of the frame after a pair of walks and double by Clark stacked the bags but it could not convert.
  • The Wolverines scored the final run of the game on a RBI single.
IN THE CIRCLE

RHP Lauren Rice (14-4) picked up the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with one strikeout in 6.1 innings. Kat Duvall came in for 0.2 innings and struck out one Wolverine.

GAME 2: Ohio State 2, Michigan 1 (8)

COMING UP CLUTCH

  • Staring down two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Ashley Prange showed off her clutch hitting by drilling a solo home run over right field to tie the game at 1-1 and force extra innings.
  • Bri Betschel beat a 0-2 count in the eighth to bring in the game-winning run with a single to left field.

LILLI PIPER: BIG TEN MEDAL OF HONOR FINALIST

Lilli Piper is a three-year letterwinner on the Ohio State softball team. The Norton, Ohio native has started each of the 145 games she has played in. A two-time All-American and unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection, Piper set the single-season home run record (20) as a junior. She is one of only two players in program history to record at least 50 runs and 50 RBI in a season. The shortstop currently ranks second in career batting average (.407) and third in home runs (3rd) among Ohio State’s program leaders. Academically, she has received Academic All-Big Ten, Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and OSU Scholar-Athlete laurels. Piper was recently selected as the No. 15 pick in the 2019 NPF College Draft by the Cleveland Comets.
