As a head coach, propbably no one, but our coordinators are "lacking"
There is a reason that, unlike in past years, no other teams are trying to hire them away...

Exactly JT isn't going anywhere we would be crazy to let him go. He was brought in to beat TSUN and he has done that better than anyone we've had in a long time (possibly ever). It's been 1758 days since they last beat us and they look primed to add another 365+. Tressel believes in building a family atmosphere, makes our players better men, and recruits as well as anyone.

But our defensive schemes/coordinators are just not getting the job done. They blitzes are poorly disguised, the D-line rarely gives a look other than going straight up against their man, I've seen very few stunts to create pressure, and the secondary has played way too conservatively. We have the DB's to get the job done in more man to man but we just drop into zone and let the QB pick us apart. You can't deny that we have the personel to get the job done (with the exception of the interior D-Line), we just need a better scheme to compliment the players we have.

Does anyone here actually realize we blitzed a ton last night...blitzed ourselves out of position a good bit too. Does anyone realize we played plenty of man coverage also? The wide open TD pass was man coverage and the DB got picked...

Need a little help with what you are referring to. Unfortunately, "TD pass" and "wide open" would refer to several plays.

I saw that. Its why my criticisim wasn't at the actual defensive scheme last night, we were spared the drop 8 rush 3 pain, but its still an absolute defensive fiasco.

Heacock is ultimately responsible for the defense. He is responsible for recruiting and developing the players as well as calling the games. The numbers don't lie, our D has been absolutely ass raped by every good offense we have played the past 3 years.

I chalk most of it up to poor line play but as I said, thats in his lap as well.

I can understand that. Absolutely. However, I would also throw in the short fields and turnovers as a sidenote to the defensive performance. Gameplans change in a game...especially when your back is against the wall.

The one where the WR, forget who, was all by himself in the corner of the EZ. Jenkins was picked, and Chekwa couldn't get there.

My head hurts. So much critiquing so little beer. Most of our problems stem from us not getting to Sanchez with the front for against an inexperienced OL. Thus the amount of blitzing. JMO

good defenses get turnovers and create short fields for the offense. i actually saw a good defense last night. it just wasn't wearing scarlet and gray.

Disagree. Great defenses do that for their offenses. Good defenses hold the line and keep the scoring manageable. I'll give the defense 21 of the points last night. Holding USC to 21 points is an adequate performance...great...heck no. However, I do understand your reasoning...for tOSU to win, the defense had to be great and they certainly were not.

We are getting manhandled in the trenches on both sides of the ball. It's really that simple. Someone smarter than me can decide if that's the coaches fault or not. My personal opinion is that they haven't played with the same intensity they showed last season.

the rest of the team has killed the D in all the games we are talking about to be sure, like you said they are good, not great.

However, there is no excuse in my mind, given the resources availible at OSU for us to have anything short of great players and great teams.

The differences bewteen what we have seen for a defense the past 3 years and what we saw under Dantonio are disturbing.

JT's gameplans seem to revolve around the defense playing great, getting big stops, and keeping points off the board until the offense either wears the other team down or springs some timely points. Unfortunately, good or adequate just isn't good enough, just like with the special teams...they have to be great too, if your team is built around them.

As was the case for USC's first TD, Freeman got burnt.

One thing I noticed though was that our blitzers weren't getting there for the most part and USC's oline and RB's did a good job of picking them up.

That certainly flows along the lines of my thoughts going into the game last night, that it would need strong contributions from Special Teams and the Defense. Unconventional scoring and opportunistic take-aways.

I concur, that would have constituted great Defense - which we did not see last night in Scarlet & Gray.
