The Ohio State Baseball (Official Thread)

Getting all these arms sorted by the start of league play will be a challenge.

It’s a good problem to have, I suppose. Just hope the coaching staff is up to the challenge...

Speaking of challenges...a lot of pressure on Dingler this year. High expectations at the plate and behind it. Handling a young staff like this will be a load.

Another challenge? Seton Hall ace Ricky Devito. The top MLB draft prospect in the Big East will likely get the ball in 10 days for the Pirates. Lonsway vs DeVito? Seton Hall is picked by everyone to finish 2nd in the BE behind St Johns, so winning this series will be tough..err...a challenge.

I think Beals plays is safe and goes Lonsway, Smith, Vance opening weekend.

2019 BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK
SHARE
  • Facebook, Twitter and Instagram | 2019 Roster | Meet The Team Night | Get to Know the Baseball Captains | Coach Beals Interview | 2019 Schedule

Every clubhouse in college baseball has a checklist of goals before a season begins. It’s that magic number of wins. It’s raising a conference championship trophy in late May. It’s getting your name called on Selection Monday.

For the past three years, Greg Beals has done just that, leading the Ohio State baseball team to check marks to all of the above: 102 combined wins, two NCAA Regional appearances and a Big Ten tournament title. There’s a winning culture in Columbus, Ohio.

But when the ninth-year head coach first met with his team last fall, his message to the group was clear: it’s time to take the next step. It’s time to set the bar higher. It’s time to punch a ticket to a Super Regional.

“I think it’s that bad taste in our mouth after losing in regionals that we learned something,” Beals said. “We genuinely felt like we belonged playing in a Super Regional last year. Going to regionals two times out of three is good, but what’s next? Let’s get ourselves into a best of three series and see who goes to Omaha. That’s going to be fun competition.”
The 2018 season was a rebound year for the Scarlet and Gray. The team finished with 36 wins and advanced back to a NCAA Regional, marking one of the best turnarounds by a ball club in the country. Now in 2019, Beals and his veteran staff welcomed back 15 letterwinners from a year ago to go along with 16 newcomers. With Opening Day just eight days out, there are still question marks to be answered, but Coach Beals has an enthusiastic outlook for the journey ahead.

“My mindset is first of excitement. I’m excited about the talent level. I’m excited where we are from an offensive and defensive standpoint. I’m excited that we have the nucleus of the defense back. Offensively, we have guys like Dominic Canzone, Conner Pohl and Dillon Dingler returning to the lineup. We also return other upperclassmen who have scratched and clawed for multiple years in our program. It’s now time to see what their junior and senior years can bring for them.”

With excitement comes some caution from the Buckeye skipper. The pitching staff lost 83 percent of innings pitched on the mound from a season ago. First Team All-American Seth Kinker has graduated as well as several other veteran arms out of the bullpen. Beals and his staff also have to replace starting pitchers Ryan Feltner and Connor Curlis, who have moved on to begin their professional careers.

  • “We are going to be very young on the mound. This group is talented and we need to get them experience.”

To help guide that inexperience will be strong leadership. The team will be led by four captains: fifth-year senior outfielders Nate Romans and Ridge Winand, junior outfielder Dominic Canzone and sophomore catcher Dillon Dingler. It’s the first time the Buckeyes have had four captains in 12 years.

“Our captains are always very important to us and this group holds the same. Four doesn’t diminish anything. Four magnifies the leadership not in just those four but the leadership that is on the team. The culture and expectation in the clubhouse has grown and these four guys embody that culture at a top-shelf level.”

Baseball: Ohio State brings inexperience, and talent to 2019

DSC_0447-e1495562599788-530x355.jpg

Unproven talent has the potential to either burst onto the scene or fall to the wayside.

The 2019 Ohio State baseball team’s success will depend on the play of its inexperienced but talented pitching staff and veteran players. The new-look team will try to build on its 36-24 record and NCAA Tournament berth from last season.

In the 2018 campaign, the Buckeyes had a plethora of experienced arms to put on the mound. Three of the team’s starters and the closer were upperclassmen.

The five most-used pitchers from last season, three of which had the lowest ERAs on the team, have moved on from the program, but the openings in the rotation will give younger players the opportunity to prove themselves this season.

“As a coach, I am really excited about the talent level that we’ve got with the pitching staff,” head coach Greg Beals said. “[I am] apprehensive about the fact a lot of them don’t have a track record.”

Among the Buckeyes’ more battle-tested pitchers are junior Jake Vance and sophomore Griffan Smith, both of whom logged more than 30 innings pitched in 2018.

Along with Smith and Vance, sophomore catcher and captain Dillon Dingler said redshirt freshman Seth Lonsway and freshman Garrett Burhenn were among the best pitchers he has ever caught and been with.

“They have a lot of confidence in themselves, a lot of poise when they are on the mound, so it should be good,” Dingler said.

But Beals noted that the entire load is not on the pitching staff.

“We’ve got some experience in that infield,” Beals said. “We’ve got to play good defense to support that young pitching staff.”

Beals said the infield will likely consist of junior first baseman Conner Pohl, senior second baseman Kobie Foppe, junior shortstop Noah West and freshman third baseman Zach Dezenzo.

Foppe, who had a .335 batting average in 2018, was a key contributor to last year’s team, which posted the most runs scored in Beals’ eight-year stint with the team.

But utility Noah McGowan is no longer on the roster after posting a team high .351 batting average. Outfielder Tyler Cowles, who posted a .322 batting average, has also graduated from the program.

Even with the loss of such offensive weapons, junior outfielder and captain Dominic Canzone said the team is confident it can continue the offensive momentum from last season.

“They were huge pieces, obviously, last year, but we have other guys that are going to step up,” Canzone said. “Then obviously, some of our leaders can produce more. Just top to bottom I feel really strong about our hitting in our lineup.”

Mason: 7 storylines to watch as the Red Sox open spring training
  • Chris Mason
  • Feb 9, 2019

1. Who wins battle of bullpen spots?

There is little drama with position players and the starting rotation, but Boston’s bullpen is as wide open as Ryan Brasier’s North Texas plains.

Nobody is locked into the closer’s role, and Brasier and Matt Barnes are the only relievers that have earned high-leverage spots.

Beyond that?

Tyler Thornburg is trying to come back from thoracic outlet surgery, Heath Hembree was up and down in 2018 and Brandon Workman’s spring training was so rough a year ago that he started the season in Pawtucket.

Young guns Travis Lakins and Durbin Feltman could steal spots; the bullpen door really is wide open.

GARRETT BURHENN NAMED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
SHARE
  • Facebook, Twitter and Instagram | 2019 Schedule | 2019 Roster

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Burhenn was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Burhenn, from Indianapolis, Ind., earns his first career weekly honor. Burhenn is the first Buckeye to be named the league’s rookie of the week since Dominic Canzone was honored in 2017.

Burhenn was dominant in his collegiate debut last Saturday, leading the Buckeyes to a 6-0 shutout victory in Port Charlotte, Fla. He allowed just one hit in eight innings of work and only faced the minimum (24 batters). Burhenn finished with six strikeouts and had no walks to claim his first win of his career. Burhenn became the first Buckeye pitcher to toss at least seven innings in a debut since Brad Goldberg threw seven innings in his debut vs. St. John’s Feb. 17, 2013.

BUCKEYES IMPROVE TO 4-0 WITH SHUTOUT WIN AT FGCU MONDAY
SHARE
  • Facebook, Twitter and Instagram | 2019 Schedule | 2019 Roster | Box Score | Season Stats

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The boys are 4-0. The Ohio State baseball team shutout FGCU, 2-0, Monday night at Swanson Stadium behind another strong performance by the Buckeye pitching staff. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Griffan Smith claimed the win after striking out a career-high seven hitters in five innings of work. Freshman right-handed reliever Bayden Root was impressive in his collegiate debut, hanging three zeros on the board and junior left-handed reliever Andrew Magno tossed a scoreless ninth for his first collegiate save. Senior left fielder Brady Cherry led the Scarlet and Gray at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run, while fifth-year senior Nate Romans was 3-for-3. With their second shutout on the week, the Buckeyes are 4-0 to start the season for the second in Coach Greg Beals’ tenure.

    COACH QUOTE
“We are playing really good and we are throwing a lot of strikes,” Beals said. “Guys are pitching to their stuff. The thing I liked was those are maturing innings that Bayden Root and Andrew Mango pitched tonight. Those are big-time growing innings for those guys. I’m really happy for guys like Brady Cherry and Nate Romans. Great to see those contributions up and down the lineup. Griffan Smith gave us a quality start, Bayden Root gave us everything he had and Magno shut it down. I can’t say all those questions we have talked about are answered, but we had a really good weekend and we need to continue to build on that and keep playing high-quality baseball.”

    FANTASTIC START FOR SMITTY
Smith, from Cincinnati, Ohio, was dominant in his first start of the year. After recording the save vs. Seton Hall on Friday, the lefty kept the Eagles off the board for five straight innings and only gave up one hit. He faced the minimum through four frames and struck out a career-high seven with no walks. He left two runners on in the fifth with a fly out to end his outing.

    CHERRY BOMB
Cherry, a native of Pendleton, Ind., launched a solo homer in the top of the second off FGCU right-handed starting pitcher Evan Lumbert to give the Buckeyes the early 1-0 lead. Cherry singled in the sixth and scored on a clutch two-out RBI single by Noah West up the middle to make it 2-0.

    BULLPEN TALK
Root, from Kokomo, Ind., kept the strong pitching going for the Buckeyes with three straight scoreless innings of relief in his debut. He left a runner on second in the bottom of the eighth with his fifth strikeout to keep it a 2-0 game. Magno left two runners on in the ninth and had one strikeout.

    UP NEXT
Ohio State heads to Corpus Christi, Texas, to play four games next weekend, including three contests at the 2019 Kleberg Bank College Classic Friday-Sunday. The Buckeyes face BYU Friday, Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday and Oral Roberts Sunday at Whataburger Field. The Scarlet and Gray will play a single road contest against the Islanders on Monday, Feb. 25.

    GAME NOTES

    • Ohio State is 4-0 to start a season for the second time in Coach Greg Beals’ tenure as coach and only the fifth time this century. OSU baseball previously started at least 4-0 in 2014 under Beals and in 2010 (5-0) and 2009 (7-0) under coach Bob Todd.
    • Smith struck out a career-high seven hitters tonight.
    • Root made his collegiate debut for the Buckeyes and had five strikeouts.
    • Cherry had his second multi-hit game and knocked his second homer of the season and 14th of his career (leads all active Buckeyes).
    • Romans had a career-high three hits.
    • Magno picked up his first career save tonight.

Gulf Coast was super aggressive at the plate...reminded me of many of our past teams by making it easy on the pitcher. They also looked like a football team. One of the most physically imposing teams I’ve seen us face. A lot of JUCO guys so they’re an older bunch.

Smith threw strikes and worked the zone up down in out and FGCU hitters were all too willing to swing at just about everything. But they only barreled up maybe two balls off Smith. Griff was excellent.

Root was pretty much fastball slider. He worked exclusively from the stretch. Low 90s velocity with a 12\6 slider that was on the same plane as his fastball, which made it particularly effective against a free swinging team. He’s good but a third pitch and he’ll be a real handful.

Magno was the least effective, but improved from last year, IMO. FGCU nearly walked us off...a couple walks and a noisy last out provided some drama.

Big props to Romans. He fanned 6 of his first 8 ABs and sat on the bench Sunday but responded Monday with a 3/3 with a BB. Dezenzo struggled at the plate. He had guys on every AB but could only manage a deep shot to CF to advance Cherry to 3B. Speaking of Cherry, he’s seeing the ball well right now, but he always does pre conference...he needs to produce during league play. Hopefully this is the year.

Overall our approach was much better than FGCU, it was nice to see the other guys flailing for a change. They scored a ton of runs against Bethune Cookman but were completely off balance and pretty much clueless against our pitching staff.

Defensively, guys were rushing there throws. Dezenzo looks very fluid at 3B but a little rushed. West is rushing, too. He had a throwing error but some home cooking from the scorers and it went on the books as a hit.

Still no word on Dingler. Todys has showed well at catcher, and moving Dingler to CF with Todys behind the plate would help bolster the lineup. Jones has been ok but Dingler in CF would be and upgrade at this point.
