My guess is that the contract specifies that, should Value City go out of business, the name reverts to the Schottenstein name. If they can't use it to pimp cheap Chinese furniture, they're absolutely going to use it to glorify the family name.
I've always hated the place. It's bad for basketball and absolute crap for hockey. Wouldn't shed any tears if there was a catastrophic fire. Speaking of hockey, when's the groundbreaking on the new hockey arena(s), Slapshot or was that all bullshit.

Ohio State plans to “eventually phase out” the corporate name attached to its basketball and hockey arena after Columbus-based Value City Furniture yesterday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to Adam Jardy of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. Value City Arena has been the name of the venue located inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center since it opened in 1998. OSU will work with the Schottenstein family “to seek new potential naming rights or sponsorships for the facility.” There is no timetable for any decisions. Ohio State to Replace Scoreboard in Schottenstein Center
The Schottenstein Center will have a new look above center court (and across the arena) beginning next season.For the first time since 2008, Ohio State is set to replace the scoreboard in the arena, a project that was approved by the Board of Trustees and will begin in April. Eighteen years ago, the replacement and upgrade celebrated the 10th season of basketball played at the Schottenstein Center. Nearly two decades later, it's time to give the arena an updated look.
The project will replace the existing scoreboard at center court, the 360-degree ribbon board and all outdated LED boards and signs. It has a $5.2 million budget and will be completed by September.
The Schottenstein Center's current scoreboard is not only one of the oldest in the Big Ten, but it is also one of the smallest in college basketball, considering the arena's size. While the new scoreboard will likely increase in size slightly, it must still fit within the existing blueprint atop the
Schottenstein Center – essentially to "hide" it for other non-basketball and hockey events – and will reuse the hoist as well. Ohio State is limited on the shape and size of the new scoreboard due to this.

Too soon old, too late smart
I certainly get that Gee was effusive about the Schottenstein's contribution to the bball edifice, was very deserved. Also am skeptical about Bjork NOT capitalizing on naming rights, and tossing away potential millions to add to the Athletic Department's coffers. Back then, nobody could have foreseen that the venerable Schottenstein's would have taken one of their flagship companies into bankruptcy/insolvency, etc. Someone, somewhere must have built a clause or three into the contract (there's a contract for everything, folks) forseeing the 'what if' stuff that could happen. And finally, wait until we get a scoreboard that does more than share who's on the floor, making points/fouls, etc. Maybe it'll sell popcorn as well. PS, always hear about the 'new' scoreboard etc, but I'd like to hear what enhancements are being added/included. Feels like technology gone nuts....

And crickets. I don't trust the dynamic duo of Slapshot and The Aggy to get anything done. It seems like they lucked into the NC last year and are content to just let the athletic department coast on momentum. Too soon old, too late smart
Been to the Schott several times during the past several years. Both men's and women's basketball. I do have a bit of trouble with spending $5.2 million on a scoreboard, that to me, does all that it's supposed to do. OK, maybe it's not the shiniest apple in the B10 stable, but hey? Who gives a rip. Doubt seriously whether any recruit has stood on the floor, looks up, and say Not going here, the scoreboard is a mess.....maybe I'm wrong. PS, cannot some of these computer whiz bangs do some reprogramming to have it show whatever one believes is missing? I demand an audit of all Athletic Department budgets/funds/cash and contracts!
