And that's the essence of golf. Having fun. Most of us (me!) get wrapped up in the score, and forget the thrill of when one hits that pure shot that goes high, straight, and towards the hole. Plus, at this time of year, the course turns green, and trees spring leaves. Sharing time with Dads, Moms, kids, is part of the joy and thrill of the game. Playing well is a luxury we all strive for, but few achieve. Remember, if you break 90, you are in the top 10% of golfers (or so I read).
I once broke 90 on the front 9. The back 9 didn't go as well though.

let the boy skip school yesterday to help us move our daughter out of college - we had some time in the morning before we had to leave, so we snuck out and played 9 - kids 3rd time on a golf course and he made his first birdie on a 360yrd par 4.

I beat him yesterday because, i'm not good, but i'm relatively consistent. Told the mrs i need new clubs, lessons, and and even then I might need to cheat, because he's going to beat me by the end of summer i think

Well, I'm swinging everything in my body to drive 230 yards these days. Let alone a flipping 7 iron. PS, had the US Open qualifier (local) at our club last week. Some of our group watched. These young 'uns were hitting driver, pitching wedge on our par 5 first hole. Unreal (I swing out of my shoes, with both driver and 3 wood, plus 9 iron!). Won't bore you with some of the other holes (plus these were black tees - farther back than the blues), but truly unreal. Most of these players were on the sunny side of 30 as well.

A hundred years ago in my caddying days... the day after the World Series at Firestone South... First National Bank would hold an event for it's monster accounts... and I'd always caddy the PGA or World series then this event with carts... The course was still set up exactly as it was for the World Series... I'd have scratch golfers who couldn't reach the fairway on the 2nd hole.. tee box is a mile from the start of the fairway... There would be as many as 7 layers/levels of rough... and when you were in the real rough, you needed a chain saw... The greens were glass... Scratch players barely broke 100... Pros are a level so far beyond the best golfers we see and know...

I remember when Freddie Couples would play in the 80s... the entire course would tilt as a million of the hottest women on the planet would follow him around the course

Recollect that Firestone was the pinnacle of the pro golf tour, once upon a time. Didn't realize that they tricked it up that much (that never made it into the tabloids). But that's why that course was so special. It's been awhile, but go to the Colonial in Ft. Worth sometime. Besides being a gorgeous course, the hotties see who can get away with wearing the fewest clothes. Was there, when heard over the speaker, 'would the girl in green please turn around'....golfer's wives seem to be the best looking, but guess one could make that statement about all sports. Your point is well taken, and mayhaps that's the reason that more wives are traveling with their golf professional husbands?

about 15 years or so ago, i worked for a financial firm in the Akron area - we had a corporate membership at Firestone for the C level managers - lucky for me, my boss was one of those C level guys and very generous, we got to play all 3 courses several times. We played south one time the week before the tournament - they had stopped mowing the rough b/c the PGA would come in and say it has to be X inches, ect. I lost probably 10-15 balls in the rough just a few feet off the fairway. For giggles we went to the tips on 16 (667 yard Monster) - i think my drive about 4 miles short of the fairway

Loved Firestone because winners would come in like 4 under for the tourney... Can't stand touneys when winner comes in 25 under...

Great story... my boss at Goodyear was out at Firestone... someone asked "what did you shoot? He said 'we were supposed to play the south but they switched us to the north course (that's the water course)..so I just went over.. opened up my ball bag and poured them into the first pond.. saved myself a lot of grief"; another Goodyear guy was with him.. he was asked "what did you shoot?" he said "dozen balls".. What? "that's all the balls I had in my bag.. I shot till I was empty"
