Wolverines' Hart wanted another shot at Buckeyes; now he'll get it

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

COLUMBUS ? Michigan's Mike Hart was adamant about wanting another shot at Ohio State after last year's three-point loss. And while it's coming months later than Hart would have preferred, the Buckeyes are happy to oblige.
The brash all-Big Ten running back was calling for a rematch in the national championship game after the teams staged an epic November battle in Columbus, the No. 1 Buckeyes beating the No. 2 Wolverines, 42-39.

Flaws exploited, OSU feeling pain Disappointed Buckeyes get ready for Michigan
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Wednesday, Nov 14, 2007

COLUMBUS: Some of the players lacked the pep in their step that had been the norm after the Ohio State Buckeyes climbed to No. 1 in the country a month ago, and the smiles were infrequent.
As team members dutifully answered questions, it was obvious they suffered from an Illinois Fighting Illini hangover courtesy of a 28-21 loss Saturday at Ohio Stadium on Senior Day. Considering the game sacked their quest for a second consecutive appearance in the BCS National Championship Game, that's understandable.
''It hurt. Anytime you lose a game, especially when you are undefeated, it's going to hurt, and it did,'' linebacker Marcus Freeman said. ''I hurt real bad for Saturday and Sunday, but we tried to put that behind us yesterday and put our focus to Michigan, because it's going to be a huge game for us.''
The Illinois game exposed weaknesses in the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball.

Plain Dealer columnist Bill Livingston comments on the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry game

Wednesday, November 14, 2007Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
Forget last week's loss- es.
Two teams will walk down the same tunnel at high noon in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday to a green field, above which rises the biggest stadium in the country.
They will have their eyes on the same prize.

The prize is not the Rose Bowl, although it is the winner's destination. The Rose Bowl is just the most scenic consolation prize in the BCS this year.
The prize is not just the Big Ten championship, although they will say it is.
The prize is to make the play in the Ohio State-Michigan game that becomes part of forever in college football.

It?s been a long wait for Carr
Michigan has lost three in a row to Ohio State
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS During the last 1,453 days, Lloyd Carr could have spent more than two million minutes thinking about what it feels like to beat Ohio State. It was Nov. 22, 2003, the last time Carr led a Michigan football team to a win over the Buckeyes.

Those were the days.

More than 16 million babies have been born since. Katrina was just another name in New Orleans. And Jim Tressel didn?t quite yet walk on water in Columbus.

He does now with five wins in six games against the Wolverines. Ohio State can cure its ills with a win Saturday in Ann Arbor. Losing to Illinois will seem like a distant memory. Finishing the season with two losses, however, would tarnish some of the luster on Tressel?s sweater vest.

Buckeyes defense seeks strong finish

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - In the "what have you done lately" category, Ohio State's 2006 defensive unit took a real beating. The Buckeyes had breezed through their first 11 games unbeaten, unscathed and virtually unsneezed upon. That defense was beyond frugal, holding those first 11 opponents to just 86 points. One game they pitched a shutout. In another, they allowed only a field goal. Seven times that defense drew the line at a touchdown or less for the opposition. That performance stood in stark contrast to the final two games, in which Ohio State gave up 80 points. Michigan scored 39 in a season-ending loss to the Buckeyes, and then Florida put 41 up while routing Ohio State in the national championship game.

Emotion part of game for UM's Mallett

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - When Barry Norton hears Lloyd Carr speak about managing Ryan Mallett's fiery personality, he can only smile. That's because before this season, Norton spent the last four years trying to rein in the wild colt as the coach at Texarkana High School in Texas. "He's always been that way," Norton said. "We've always had to slow him down a little bit." Now in his freshman season at Michigan, Mallett has seen much more time in the pocket than he could have ever expected because of the ongoing health issues of starter Chad Henne. Mallett has appeared in 10 games and started three while Henne has dealt with a separated right shoulder, a right knee injury and a tweaked right ankle.

OSU legend says losses never fade completely

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 11.14.2007

COLUMBUS ? She was wearing a long red coat. That much I remember.
When Eddie George finally emerged from the locker room after unbeaten Ohio State was upset by Michigan in 1995 in Ann Arbor, his mom, wearing a long red coat, walked to him and gave him an extended, consoling hug.
The look in his eyes said it was going to take more than his mother to get over this one, though.
He?s still working on it, George said earlier this week, as another Ohio State team knocked from a lofty perch late in the season prepares to go to Michigan.
?Every year around this time, I?m reminded of it,? George said as he stood on the indoor practice field at the Woody Hayes practice facility. ?I don?t get it the other 364 days of the year. But, of course, you always think about it.
?We were ranked No. 2 in the country. All we had to do was go in and beat Michigan, a team that had underachieved most of the year. They had nothing to play for, other than to play spoiler. And that?s what they did, they spoiled our chances.?

Hall entertains large crowd at annual "Buckeye Bash"

Dan Stemen | [email protected] - 11.14.2007

VAN WERT ? It is ?Michigan Week? and that means around the State of Ohio, Buckeye fans are gearing up for ?The Game? as it is called. At the top of the list to kick-off the week for many OSU fans in the area, was the annual Van Wert and Paulding County OSU Alumni Club?s ?Buckeye Bash? -- which was held at JEHMMS Banquet Hall Tuesday evening in Van Wert. This year's speaker was former Wayne Trace standout and Ohio State basketball player Steve Hall, who played for the Buckeyes? Basketball Team from 1990 to 1993, and was a member of two Big Ten championship teams. During Hall?s tenure at OSU on the hardwood, the Buckeyes played in one National Invitation Tournament and three NCAA Tournaments.

LLLLLoyd's legacy of losing against Buckeyes on the line
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
11/14/2007

COLUMBUS -- Eddie George remembers what it was like when John Cooper's job was on the line in 1994. Cooper was winless against Michigan through his first six seasons at Ohio State, and another loss to the Wolverines in '94 would have brought a quick exit to the Cooper era.

''We took it personally,'' George said. ''We said, 'No, he's not going to get fired, because that's a reflection of us.'''

Ohio State did win that game, although it did little for Cooper's legacy against Michigan. He ended his Ohio State career 2-10-1 against the Wolverines, a mark that to this day brings a sneer from loyal OSU fans.

Rob Oller commentary: Generation gap in Michigan ... Should Carr go?

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 3:51 AM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In the back kitchen of a sub shop on the Michigan campus, three men ponder Lloyd Carr's future with the lack of passion of a customer choosing between cheddar or provolone. Their shrugs and simple observations indicate that Carr's fate is not the topic du jour, much less the theme of the season. After all, they point out, it is level Lloyd being discussed here, not some polarizing political figure whose mere mention draws jeers from a decidedly liberal student body.
Carr is a good guy, the sandwich-makers agree. He has done a lot for the university, helped cheerlead for Michigan's new children's hospital. He won a national championship in 1997. Plus, Michigan ran off eight wins in a row before losing Saturday to Wisconsin.

OSU notebook: Possibility of sanctions lingers
Buckeyes haven't turned in report to Big Ten yet about skirmish after loss
Wednesday, November 14, 2007 3:41 AM
By Tim May and Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said yesterday that he likely won't know until Thursday or later whether the Big Ten will sanction some of his players for their actions Saturday in a fracas after a loss to Illinois. The shoving match, which included some punches being thrown, came after Illinois players charged the center of the Ohio Stadium field, apparently to dance on the block O. Several Ohio State players said Monday that they stood fast to protect their turf, including cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, who was noticeably involved, and receiver Brian Robiskie.
"We have done some film work, the little bit we could get, and I think by Thursday we have to have everything submitted from our vantage point," Tressel said.

Prime target: Mario Manningham
Wolverine has had 100 yards receiving and scored a TD in each of his past six games
Wednesday, November 14, 2007 3:54 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Here's a good question: When Michigan is down and everybody knows the Wolverines are going to try to rally by throwing to receiver Mario Manningham, how come he usually gets open and makes catches anyway? Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins offered an answer.
"A lot of teams try to put one guy on him, and he's good enough to beat somebody," Jenkins said. "That's usually what it turns out to be, him and somebody else, and usually he wins that battle."
