Ladies and gentlemen - this has been a great season. 12-0 capped off by a win against M*ch*g*n. I picked up the game thread from just after the final whistle. I know there were plenty of things to analyze, nitpick and complain about during the game. I'm in no mood to read any of that stuff. When you win The Game and you're undefeated, it doesn't matter how you got there.
I said before the season that while I regret that this team wasn't going to play in a bowl, I felt a bit liberated as a fan by the sanctions. I wouldn't want it to be this way again, but it has been kind of nice to not have to worry about politics, bullshit, computer points, pundits or any of that stuff. It has just been my favorite team against the one on the other sideline. I got to take everything as it came, and take everything that happened this season at face value.
I'm so proud of this team. They had all kinds of excuses to not accomplish what they just did, and they managed to pull it off anyway. As fans, we can not this team be forgotten just because they are not in the national championship picture or playing in a bowl game. Regardless of what's missing, this has been a very special season in the history of Ohio State football.
This game in particular was a microcosm of the season. It started off with a lot of hype and outsized expectations. It started off lively, then questions arose due to mistakes, undisciplined play and defensive lapses. Then in the second half, they were tough, opportunistic and found a way to secure the victory almost thru sheer force of will.
I don't think you can give enough credit to Luke Fickell and his defense for the way they performed in the second half of the season and the second half of today's game. People (myself included) were asking a lot of tough questions earlier in the fall. He responded well to a tough circumstance, and more importantly he got his players on defense to respond as well. Are there deficiencies still? Sure. That unit has flat out won this team several games down the stretch. I think today's game was one of them. When you keep a M*ch*g*n team from crossing midfield in a close game, you've accomplished something special. This was a flawed defensive group, but I love 'em.
