OHIO STATE'S STATISTICIAN LEFT A HISTORICAL BURN IN THE OFFICIAL BOX SCORE FOR THE 1968 MICHIGAN GAME

88273_h.jpg

In the long and rich history of “The Game,” the 1968 battle between No. 4 Michigan and No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus is remembered fondly, thanks to the 50 points Woody Hayes and his “Super Sophs” hung on the Wolverines.

The 50 points tied the 1961 effort for most ever scored in the rivalry against the Wolverines Ohio State's statistician at the time wanted to leave a mark with this delightful bit of trash talking at the bottom of page nine in the official box score.

Ohio State Football Notebook: ‘We can’t leave it up to the refs’

Ohio-State-Football-Notebook.jpg

The Spot Was Good?

It was fourth-and-1 at the Michigan 16-yard line. The final half of the second overtime. J.T. Barrett took the snap and slammed forward, picking up the first down in the process. The line judge immediately spotted the ball as a first down because the nose of the ball only had to be touching the 15-yard line.

Then came the review, which was unable to overturn the call.

And with that un-overturned call, the Buckeyes won.

Or at least that is how some people remember the game. What actually happened, however, is that Ohio State was still 15 yards away from the end zone, and not super-excited to rely on a kicker who had missed field goal attempts of 37 and 21 yards on the day.

As you’ll recall, Curtis Samuel would go around the left end on the very next play and score the winning touchdown.

Even if the memory of last year’s game gets a little hazy after the fourth down, the Michigan Wolverines still remember the feeling of that one call. And they’ll be fighting to avoid a similar feeling this year.

“We know that going into this game we can’t leave any doubt,” said running back Karan Higdon. “We can’t leave it up to the refs and put the game in the refs’ hands. We know we have to do our job and make sure there’s no small margin.”

Credit Where It Is Due

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is about to start his fourth Michigan game. He is currently 3-0 as a starter in the rivalry and is looking to become the first Buckeye starting quarterback to ever finish 4-0 against the Wolverines.

Is that exactly what Urban Meyer envisioned when he recruited Barrett?

“I’d like to take credit, but I gotta give credit to Tom Herman on that,” he said.

“It was bizarre. You had Mitch Trubisky, you had Malik Zaire in state here that we were very, very interested in. And I mean I was just here a couple of weeks and then we started going and ‘Let’s get them down here and meet them, get them in camp.’ And all of a sudden, ‘I’m not going to come to camp, I’m going to commit to somewhere else.’ I was just shocked by the whole scenario. Obviously those are two very good players. And then I’m thinking, ‘Holy cow, this is going fast.'”

Being new at Ohio State, Meyer wasn’t yet familiar with Ohio’s prospects, and so he was hoping to get a better look at them in summer camp. That never happened, but the Buckeyes made do with the 4-star kid from Wichita Falls, Texas.

“So Tom Herman found J.T. and came to me, there was a lot of trust in Tom. I didn’t know Tom very well, and obviously he did a very good job finding him,” Meyer said.

And the rest is — and continues to become — history.

Baby Scarlett refuses to use her Michigan pacifier because she’s obviously an Ohio State fan

Even though she’s just a baby, she gets the rivalry.

It’s Beat Michigan week, and most Buckeye fans are born with fandom in their blood. The same can be said about Scarlett (I mean, how appropriate is that name) who just couldn’t be bothered using a Michigan pacifier. Instead, she waits for her Mom, Kelly McLay, to swap it out with some Ohio State gear.

Scarlett’s Dad, John McLay, is a Cleveland native who graduated from dental school at Ohio State in 2005. A client of Kelly’s was a Michigan law school grad, and gifted the couple a bunch of TTUN gear as a joke when Scarlett was born.

All we know, is Scarlett already has impeccable taste in football allegiances.
