Re: Barksdale
Yep..

However...IF Barksdale had to decide today, I would bet on OSU.

Having said that, he is not, and I get the feeling this thing is going to extend out.

No doubt OSU has MUCH to sell a defensive recruit with their ability to crank out defensive talent....nobody can deny that.

However, things ARE changing...RIGHT NOW...Ron English WILL turn this defense around.

The source on this has been adamant from the day that Ron was elevated that things would change....and from his reports coming from spring ball the defensive fire is much more noticeable...

Steve Stripling is now in year 2..and he is a good DL coach..and what is best is that what he is best at teaching philosophy wise (ATTACK) is exactly what Ron English wants to do...and Herrmann did not...so this is an added bonus.

Steve Szabo might be the most impressive off all...in 2 years our LB's will be back amongst the top in the B10...BANK IT...stressing fundamentals like you wouldn't believe...teaching instead of scolding...a LB coach that has worked with Bill Parcells and Bill Bellicheck...on championship NE defenses...

Ron Lee...a guy that has had great success defensively wherever he has been..

And last..the man running it...Ron English...you guys would not believe his INTENSITY...and his work with our secondary says it all...last year before injuries hit, the secondary was playing stellar ball with not much talent...

He has scrapped the NASA level defense that left our defenders hesitant and playing tentatively because they were thinking too much...English stresses attack style defense...go get the ball carrier.

So...give it time....don't be disappointed if our defense struggles a bit this season....give them time to gel and get their feet under them...by the last 1/3 of the season I bet they are playing very well...and in the future years Michigan's defense WILL rival the ones that OSU does so well producing.

And OSU fans...respond how ever you want...you know I'm not one to blow smoke...the past is just that...the past. 1-4-0

The next time a delusional M fan tries to thump their chest about football academics, refer them to this list.

I clicked on every michigan name I recognized, trying to sample what classes the non-benchwarmers were taking. Looks pretty cushy to me.
---------------------
enrolled in Division of Kinesiology (fairly easy from what I've heard):
-> with no major: Henne, Grady, Kastl, Adams, Martin, Sears, Harrison, Simpson, McKinney, Manningham
-> sp mgmt & comm: Mundy, Rivas, Kraus, Henige Jr,
-> spanish: ecker
---------------------
General Studies major:

-> Hood, Burgess, Avant, Gutz, Mason, Crable, Breaston, Barringer, Arrington, Hall, Englemon, Thompson, McClintock, Graham, Oluigbo, Harris, Woodley, Lentz, Riley, Kolodziej, Long, Watson, Stenavich, Branch, Massaquoi, Biggs, Massey, Woods
---------------------
Undecided:

-> Trent, Bass, Hart, Mesko,

Re: What Will Be Michigan's Record in '06?
hunterdonbuck,

In some ways I agree in other I completely disagree. You do realize half the players michigan and osu recruited against each other. I would venture to tell you with confidence that michigans lbers would be atleast side by side with carpenter, schlegel and ajhawk. In fact at olber I believe burgess and crable are faster than hawk and schlegel, and harris is faster than carpenter for sure. Speed on defense isn't an issue, atleast not the way you think.

What our buckeye friends either don't believe or don't agree is the system herman ran was not forcing the gus to act, it did the opposite. It had guys reacting, and doing it a bit too late.

The Game is roughly six months away. Never forget what happens to a rodent when it is backed into a corner - it bares its teeth. Regardless of what happens over the next six months, this game will be one for the ages. An early retirement for for IVloyd? Damn near sainthood for JT? It's never too early to get pumped for this one. Is anyone posting on the Duke-UNC basketball boards right now? The greatest rivalry in sports to be decided on November 18 in Columbus, Ohio.

"I would venture to tell you with confidence that michigans lbers would be atleast side by side with carpenter, schlegel and ajhawk. In fact at olber I believe burgess and crable are faster than hawk and schlegel, and harris is faster than carpenter for sure."

Well, 40 times aren't the says all be all of how good an LB is, of course, and you can find several 40 times for every player, some higher than what you'd think, some lower... Anyway, after quickly googling:

Burgess v. Hawk
4.55 v. 4.46
Crable v. Schlegel
4.74 v. 4.81
Harris v. Carpenter
4.65 v 4.61

Frankly, none of these guys are seperated by more than 9 hundreths of a second, and all fall within .35 second of eachother, and I am not of the position that such a difference is particularly remarkable. That is, I really don't care how fast a guy runs 40 yards in a straight line. I mean, I realize it's a measure of some kind, but the emphasis on the 40 time is ridiculous. How often do you need your LB running 40 yards straight? What it tells me, if your answer is "often" is that your LB's aren't doing the job in the first place (that being stuffing the run at or near the LOS).

Speaking of getting the job done in the first place....
Tackles:
Hawk Total = 121 TFL = 16.5
Schlegel Total = 82 TFL = 7
Carpenter Total = 49 TFL = 10.5

Harris Total = 88 TFL = 6
Burgess Total = 81 TFL = 4
Crable Total = 14 TFL = 3

Obviously, there are problems with this particular metric as well... But, as my sig line suggests (spotting #2, #6 and #45 aint hard), it would seem even if Crable is faster than Schlegs... he's not in position that often.

Anyway, I tried not to be "Choosy" in the 40 times I selected to show that energyblue1 is a victim of misguided beliefs on who's fast, and who's faster.. but, it really doesn't much matter - not relative to itself and certainly not relative to the 06 OSU Michigan game. Frankly, the general assertion that Michigan's LB can "run" with OSU's former trio is correct, the race would be generally close. I don't know if had OSU landed any of the Michigan guys, if they'd have started over OSU's trio... hard to say, I like to think it's quite doubtful...

But, when dude says, ".... system herman ran was not forcing the gus[sic] to act, it did the opposite. It had guys reacting, and doing it a bit too late." I'd have to agree.
