Game Thread THE GAME: #1 Ohio State 42, #2 Michigan 39 (11/18/06)

Correct me if I'm wrong, BB73, but isn't this the first 3-game winning streak we've had against TSUN since the 4-gamer from 1960 to 1963?

I know we had the run from 72 to 75 of:
72 W
73 T
74 W
75 W
but I looked at collegefootballdatawarehouse and couldn't find another streak of three wins until I got all the way back to 60-63.

If true, that is a long time to wait. Tressel and these Seniors (and Juniors and RS Sophs) have accomplished something that has not been done in a very long time.

got into it with a mod on GBW... after he made some remark about Ohio State fans being overly obsessed with beating M, i called him out on his outrageous post count as evidence of his own obsession. he challenged me to prove how his obsession with all things M had anything to do with beating Ohio State, and even went so far as to say that if i DO prove it, he would never post there again. unfortunately, before i could send my reply, he locked the thread, so, in order to get this off my chest, i'm posting my response here for the record.

first off, when did i ever say that you were obsessed with M-OSU? you are quite obviously obsessed with M, as evidenced by your 10,000+ posts on an M sports message board.

however, i'm going to take a different tack here.

the bottom line is that this is a SPORTS message board, specifically a college football board, and even more specifically a board for all things M. you are an M fan. M is your mecca, as you yourself said. NOW, one thing is 100% certain about any fan of, or indeed any player or coach for Ohio State or Michigan. that certainty is that THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME of EVERY SEASON IS THE LAST GAME against Michigan or Ohio State respectively.

when it comes to college football the very name Michigan evokes images of the winged helmets, and Desmond Howard's Heisman pose, and thoughts of championships and Rose Bowls. the goal of EVERY Michigan team, in EVERY sport, in EVERY year is to WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. in order for Michigan to achieve the goal of being "The Leaders and the Best," and in order for "Those who stay" to actually BE Champions, the penultimate game on the schedule every year is the struggle against Ohio State. of course, sometimes, very rarely, stuff happens, and the last game does not have a direct impact on the Big Ten Championship, but in the vast majority of Big Ten seasons, the crown is determined by the result of The Game. there have been 90-something Big Ten seasons, and M and Ohio State have claimed 70 of those 90-some crowns. in addition, more often than not, even in the years in which either Ohio State or Michigan are already out of the running, an upset in The Game has allowed one of the Little Eight to snatch the title. this is THE Game. this is for ALL THE MARBLES. but this is not just for the Big Ten Crown. The Game, more often than not, also has a direct impact in determining the winner of the National Championship. this was the case this year, but also in 2003, 2002, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1993, 1979, 1976, 1975, 1974, 1973, 1972, 1971, 1970, 1969, 1968, and even further back than that...

in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, there are two running clocks: on one is the countdown to the next game; on the other is a countdown to the next edition of The Game. and as Bo said last Monday, "do you think we just started preparing for Ohio State this week? We do something to beat Ohio State EVERY DAY. do you think they ignored us all year and just went about their business? NO."

so you ask me to prove that the fact that you have 10,000+ posts here is any indication that you are obsessed with beating Ohio State? i would pose to you that if you are NOT obsessed with beating Ohio State, then your claims of bleeding Maize and Blue, and being a Michigan Man, and Ann Arbor being your Mecca, and all that other hyperbolic crap all ring hollow.

EVERY Michigan Football Championship runs through Columbus. if you want to call yourself a Michigan fan, you damn well BETTER be obsessed with beating Ohio State. if not, all that other stuff is just fake, plastic window dressing.

have a nice day.

Is it the coaches, the talent level, the gameplan, the general offensive/defensive philosophy, the recruiting process, the lack of motivation, the eagerness to win a game, etc ? I just don't know. However, I know one thing for sure, I'm sick of losing to OSU year after year.

Let me just say I don't feel any empathy for scUM fans. I was tortured by the 1990s....and I hope our dominance of that school continues forever. I absolutely hate how arrogant their fans sounded during the Cooper years and I love seeing the egg on their face now.

I don't think scUM deserves a rematch - we were better than them by two touchdowns as we handed them 10 points and the officials handed them 7 more. Say what you want about Crable's hit, mishigan fans (misspelled on purpose), but it was a legit call and if Crable wasn't so undisciplined, he wouldn't have hit T. Smith 10 minutes too late and 6 feet too high.

PS - Crable, Burgess - you are 1-3 against Ohio State. Thanks for not getting on the Tressel Train when you had the chance! Oh, does anyone know what size Chris Perry's feet are? I am just curious how his dumb ass will be able to fit his foot in his mouth. I believe the NFL benchwarmer mentioned the game would be a blowout.

Finally, I used to think Mike Hart had class. I now know he goes to class, but doesn't know what it means to lose with class. Funny, because he has had three chances to learn how!

You are correct - the four-game winning streak from 1960-63 was the last time the Bucks won as many as three in a row.

OSU-UM entertaining, but Buckeyes were better team

By Jim Morris

A few observations about the crazy, mixed-up sports scene around Ohio these days:
? Some final thoughts about Ohio State-Michigan. The football game lived up to its hype, but don't expect to see that rematch people have talked about. Those folks are mostly from Michigan now and they'll likely taunt Buckeye fans, wondering if OSU is "afraid" to play Michigan again ... because they only won by three points.

Hardly. Michigan shouldn't have been that close. Only two unforced errors and a tipped pass made the game competitive.
Poll: Who should OSU play in the title game? ? Why in the world would the Cincinnati Reds want to sign a 39-year-old pitcher and a Juan Castro clone, and spend good money doing it?
Other teams are spending their money for quality players who have some sort of future. They're called difference-makers.
The Reds were fortunate to be in the pennant chase as long as they were last year. If the National League wasn't so weak, they would have been trying to stay out of the cellar.
If the Reds think they can stand pat or just sign a few fill-ins, they'll have another average or poor season.
That's not what the fans want.
? I found out one thing by writing a tongue-in-cheek Audible about Cincinnati Bengals fans a couple of weeks ago. From the e-mails I received, it is obvious some are wound a bit too tight.
Lighten up. It's football.
? That said, the Bengals shouldn't take their New Orleans success too seriously. Their game this week is a trap game.
If the Bengals look ahead to the Baltimore Ravens, the improving Browns, playing in Cleveland, will jump up and bite them.

Big Ten honors Ohio State's Smith

Staff and Wire Reports

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Troy Smith was named Big Ten offensive player of the week for the fifth time this year ? the most accolades for one player in a single season in conference history ? after leading the Ohio State football team to a 42-39 victory over Michigan with four touchdown passes.
Smith went 29-of-41 through the air for 316 yards and connected with four different receivers for TDs. He has 30 scoring passes this season, breaking the school record of 29 that Bobby Hoying set in 1995.

Only two Big Ten quarterbacks have thrown more TD passes in a season: Purdue's Drew Brees (39 in 1998) and Kyle Orton (31 in 2004).
The OSU-Michigan game will be replayed on ESPN Classic at 9 p.m. Wednesday.
