The feminization of Sportscenter

THe last 2 times I"ve tuned into Sportscenter I've seen some Make A Wish garbage - a segment about some dying boy who is trying to "make a wish", usually involving something sports related. And then a few weeks ago there was that worthless story about the child golfer who got an exemption because her mom was dying. Yes, yes, all sweet and sappy, but what the hell does it have to do wtih sports? I tune into to see how the Tigers are doing, to hear the latest NFL news, to laugh at TO, not to see some crap that I would expect to see on Entertainment Tonight.

Craig Kilborn, where are you? Jumanji!

What does the World Series of Poker have to to do with sports? What does the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest have to to do with sports? What does the Scripps National Spelling Bee have to do with sports? What does the World's Strongest Man Contest have to do with sports? What do the X-Games or Great Outdoor Games have to do with sports?

ESPN has been on for over 25 years, and you're just now realizing that ESPN (the original Rugby channel) runs a bunch of filler for 16 hours a day?

Now come on....... 16 hours a day? That's giving them a little more credit than they deserve, don't you think?

I agree that Sportscenter sucks, and therefore I rarely watch it anymore.

I do have another bitch though. Why is it that whenever I wake up on Saturday morning and tune in ESPN Classic to see what classic NCAA football game they're replaying, it ALWAYS involves Notre Dame? It's usually ND-Miami, ND-scUM or ND-USC.

ESPN sucks.

The sad thing is that I'm okay with them being the Eating, Strongman, Poker Network. Dominoes seems like a step too far, however. :)

I'm with tibor on this one. I'm sorry the kid is dying and I'm glad that he gets to hang out with his sports hero, but it doesn't need to be on tv. Go ahead and grant the kids wish because it's nice, not because of ratings.

I agree. When we were in college, my wife (then girlfriend) would stay in my room and watch sportscenter and then tell me about the highlights and what happened the night before. Now we're at the bar and she looks over and asks "why in the hell are dominos are espn?" I can't recall the last time I tuned into sportscenter; probably last fall sometime. Guess that's what happens when you have too many channels to fill for programming.

Anyone think a new sports programming network, one that shows just sports and is targeted at sports fan, could come along and destroy ESPN? I would say no, just because it would be hard to obtain contracts to the main sporting events, but I sure do wish it would happen.

Unfortunately, probably the biggest reason (maybe even the ONLY reason) the kid's wish was granted was because of the ratings. Maybe I should stick a bunch of pepperoni on my chest, pretend to have some fatal disease, and wish that I never have to see one of those human-interest stories on a sports channel again.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. The rights to things is what si going to keep someone from totally taking over. What I could see happening is as rights to things keep going up then ESPN slowly would lose things here and there and we wouldn't have one channel knocking espn out but instead a couple of channels taking a more prominant spot. Such as OLN getting hockey and the tour de france ( Their director of programming has said they want to get the rights to more main stream sports). NFL Network starting to get games this year. FSN local channels are starting to get more and more local baseball and hockey games. So it should be interesting to see how espn reacts in teh next few years.
