    • Well the wife hit a site (I don't know what) and downloaded some Malware BS that starting giving up fake bluescreens and other stupid errors that weren't really there.

    Besides completely changing how everything looked, nothing appears to be affected in any way.

    That was, at least, until I rebooted the machine. :smash:

    Now Windows is saying it needs to be activated ( :huh: ) but it won't connect to the internet to do it (I have the tag and everything ready to go, but I can't get the damned thing to connect.

    It's obvious that the link is good and according to my router, at least, it's seeing activity from the computer.

    Any ideas?

    I'm re-installing Winblows right now, but I could use some ideas if anyone has any....

    BTW system restores won't work. The stupid malware thing wiped them all out.

    Connect in safe mode, wipe the HD, reinstall. Either than or call your antivirus software (assuming you have one) for help.

    Well the malware/virus thing is gone. I was rebooting because it was running really slowly.

    I'd like to try to avoid wiping the HD if at all possible...

    Stupid question, will the XP rebuild disk let me log onto the internet?

    I can't seem to get it to connect or even see the NIC ?!?!

    Call your ISP MIke maybe they can help. For example sbcglobal has a url that connects when the normal way doesn't work.
    don't forget to tell the wife she has to help you "pass the day" until you do connect.

    Does the NIC show up in Device Manager? Is there a "Local Area Connection" or similar in the Network Connections window under Control Panel? Does your ISP require any special software to connect to the internet?

    Hate to tell you this, but once your computer is infected with malware, you have no way to know whether it's clean unless you wipe the disk and reinstall everything. They could have easily dropped a rootkit in there. Is it likely? Maybe, maybe not. But you have no way of knowing.

    It wasn't at first. My ISP is just a basic Coax connection that goes into a router and from there it's Cat5 into the machine.

    I did get it to work eventually. I searched the Intel site (it's an Intel onboard NIC) and eventually found the right driver. It works now.

    It is odd however, that the disk the drivers were supposedly on isn't there (there is a 2nd disk that Dell ships with the machine). I never found it....hell I never found the disk for the other machine I have too.

    But like I said I have it going now.

    That will happen once I get the pictures of the kid and other stuff backed up. That should be done sometime today probably.
