Yeah I can see that as well, but he will eventually gain weight and could follow the Heyward, Patterson, etc plan of play DE and then move inside later in career...

Scheme Or Development

According to some scouting reports, our current crop of DT?s are average. Which contradicts "Agree with your overall point though about the depth at DT. Lots of competition there this year and into the future." Assuming we have the talent and I do not believe its development because the amount of players playing on Sunday. It must be philosophy in scheme requiring the DT's to smear the point of the attack and then read as they consume blocks. My aggressive preference is to penetrate and force the offense to commit blockers that have other assignments on the play.

I think it is more scheme FWIW. This sort of goes along with something I had been meaning to ask for a long time. I do not understand why Ohio State does not offer the big run stuffing defensive tackle. Rather they seem to recruit the more mobile undersized (less than 300 pound) DTs. I do not understand why they do not recruit the plus 300 pound DT where they can get a push up the middle and have their athletic defensive ends/LBs put pressure on the passer. This is especially important with more teams running the spread offense.

I don't see how you can put "OSU leads" for Fellows @ this point regardless of what's been said/heard about him possibly switching over. As long as it still says "soft verbal" next to Illinois", OSU isn't leading anything. Plus, after his post spring game remarks, nothing he saw @ the spring game did anything to change that committment status.

Once again, they get reports from emails, and other boards that lead them to believe this...IF you don't want to believe them then don't...Most understand that you take the news FWIW, but these guys have proven to know what they are talkin' about...

Last year, Keith Wells kept telling recruiting sites that he was committed to Florida State for months after it became apparent to everyone that there was a zero percent chance that he'd end up signing with the Seminoles. By the time he formally de-committed from Florida State, Wells had already been a "silent verbal" to Ohio State for weeks.

Now, each kid's recruitment is different, and Fellows may end up sticking with his Illinois verbal ... but I don't think so.

Agreed, light & speed DT's are nice for a zone blitz scheme; however, when all things are equal a big 300+ DT can hold the point of attack much more affectively (ie. Glenn Dorsey).

Seriously, go back and take a look at our '05, '03, and '02 d-lines. They weren't bigger than last year's or this year's. I like the idea of a 330 lbs DT that takes on two blockers too but it isn't necessary.

Committed to the Buckeyes

Darrell Givens, Indian Head (Maryland) Lackey (6' 1", 178 lbs, 4.46 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix (Miami, Florida, Maryland, Rutgers, Oregon, Penn State, all offered). First, the good news: Darrell claims to be a fan of the Buckeyes, he made unofficial visits to Columbus for a game last fall and for the March 9th Junior Day, he is planning to attend Ohio State's Spring Game, he is a close friend of 2008 Buckeye signee Lamaar Thomas, and he wants to play for a school with a very stable coaching staff. Now the bad news: Darrell is one of the top cornerback prospects in the nation, he has offers from just about everybody, and as a kid he dreamed about playing for the Miami Hurricanes. We'd say that the 'Canes are the early leader, but Ohio State should still be considered a strong contender, at least for the time being.

Then the difference is scheme, talent, or recruiting? Tim Anderson was there 02 & 03. Quinn Pitcock was with the 05. Since then we have been soft up the middle.

Experience mainly but the coaching has changed too. We lost Dantonio after '03, but we still had a good d-line in '05 and '06 with Heacock and Fickell so I don't think that's been the problem. This year there are no excuses not to have a good d-line, save for a rash of injuries.

Those guys were soft up the middle as freshmen and sophs just like the current group was/is.

Guys who play with their hand in the dirt have the hardest time making the adjustment to big time CFB. You could see the talent last year, they just needed some physical maturation and experience. Hopefully they have enough of both this year. They will make us or break us imo.
