Well, OSU has landed a fairly significant percentage of linemen at the beginning of the process. So the notion that the line is not up to par is a result of them not getting whom they wanted is largely inaccurate.

that's what BP Recruiting Team says. We can't fault a poster for going off of that, can we?

05 - Boone (OSU), Wilson (UF), Bemoll (Cal), Cordle (OSU), Roarke (Neb)
06 - Smith (OSU), Boren (UM), Thomas (Pitt), Tripp (UGA), Browning (OSU), Miller (OSU)
07 - Oglesby (Wisc), Davis (Rut), Wilson (FL), Blankenship (OSU), Odowd (USC)

05 - Boone & Cordle were landed, Bemoll was lost. Good year, not great.
06 - They got Smith, whiffed on the other 3. Everyone hoped he could learn pass pro, which never happened. Browning & Miller were backup plans.
07 - ONE lineman landed, a camp offer that was a major sleeper. A very bad year of OL recruiting.

Did he want to be a buckeye? Or was he very interested in OSU and they backed off inexplicably? The SC folks were quite confident long before that cooling.

What about the '04 class? Rehring, Mitchum, Persons and Skinner all got their offers by July at the latest, and all subsequently verballed. That class was supposed to be the foundation, yet despite the fact that they were alll identified fairly early and had eventually verballed at one time or another, Rehring seems to be the only one who can be called a success.

Again in '05, the two guys that they eventually signed both verballed before May. Can't say they didn't land who they wanted to. Wilson had no offer.

In '06, they got their guy in Smith but missed out on Boren. Thomas was a late offer like Browning was. And OSU never had a shot at Tripp.

The one guy they got in '07 had an offer in his pocket for a year and had verballed by summer. It all seems to me that OSU has tremendous success in getting the guys they offer early, just as they have this year.

Quite honestly, I just didn't go back that far. Either way, Rehring & Skinner were developmental recruits. Person was the only top kid coming in.

In 04 & 05 they did well enough, but 06 & 07 compensated in the opposite direction.
The one guy they got in '07 had an offer in his pocket for a year and had verballed by summer. It all seems to me that OSU has tremendous success in getting the guys they offer early, just as they have this year.

07 pretty boldly refutes that claim, and goes back to the biggest problem moving forward, tackle depth. Davis & Oglesby were major blows.

Well it seems to me that to analyze how the performance of the OL relates to the success of OSU in getting verbals from early offers, you ought to at least look at the SR class, which is intuitively the class that would have the most impact on the performance of the OL. The great success that OSU had in pulling in early verbals from the SR class and the lackluster play of the line contradicts the notion that the predominant reason for the line play has been a lack of success in locking down targets.

Davis himself was a late target, and quite a few weren't sold on him as a OT. We all knew fairly early that Oglesby wasn't coming here.

Justin Boren starts last year imo, and brings physicality and toughness to a soft line. Not locking him down was a major loss, even if it was excusable. If they get him, Person remains a journeyman with many 04ers.

He was offered in May, and targeted months before that.

True, but he moved to LT this year, after garnering frosh AA honors at guard last year. Even at guard, he could be helpful.

I don't see how that's a refutation given what we are discussing. He was a major target dating back well before his senior year.


With Boren & Davis on board, Rehring & Person have to fight hard for their jobs. In our current situation, we needed two true freshman to explode onto the scene to push them for PT. Brewster took Person out of the lineup, but Shugarts' injury made things comfy again for Rehring.

Agree. So I guess my point is that the main reason for the struggles has been that the talent level for kids, even among those that the staff identified and targeted early, have just not been up to par. That's a function of talent identification, which leads to my assertion that they ought to be more aggressive in recruiting the players that programs with better success on the field are also targeting.
