The Buckeyes' Top Prospects for 2008

September Edition

2008OSUFBRecruits9-2v2.jpg

Since our last update, Ohio State has picked up verbal commitments from defensive tackle Garrett Goebel (Lombard, Illinois) and tight end Nic DiLillo (Madison, Ohio). In addition, the Buckeyes have scheduled official visits with the following uncommitted prospects: Maryland athlete Lamaar Thomas (September 22nd vs. Northwestern); Texas wide receiver Jeffrey Fuller (October 20th vs. Michigan State); JUCO defensive tackle Justin Thompson (October 25th, mid-week); Pennsylvania quarterback Terrelle Pryor (November 3rd vs. Wisconsin); Florida linebacker Etienne Sabino (November 3rd vs. Wisconsin); and West Virginia offensive lineman Josh Jenkins (December 1st, post-season).

Speed

1. Mike Floyd, St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall (6' 3", 195 lbs, 4.55 forty); Ohio State (offered) in top 5 (Notre Dame, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, all offered). Some people consider Floyd to be the best wide receiver prospect in the country for the class of 2008. As a junior, Mike caught 63 passes for 1,240 yards and 16 touchdowns en route to being named the AP Player of the Year for the state of Minnesota. Update 09/01 - Mike still favors Notre Dame (official visit 10/20 vs. Southern Cal), but Ohio State is a close second, with Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota still in the running.

go-bux.bmp
2. DeVier Posey, Cincinnati Lasalle (6' 3", 190 lbs, 4.5 forty); committed to Ohio State on March 13th. Last season, Posey was named first team All Ohio at wide receiver after he caught 35 passes for 750 yards and 7 touchdowns. DeVier has massive potential and could flourish with the coaching that he will receive at the next level. Posey is a pure athlete with exceptional foot quickness, fluid directional change, and soft hands. In addition to being a stand out on the gridiron, DeVier also excels in the classroom, where he sports a 4.0 GPA.

3. Cordale Scott, Cleveland Glenville (6' 5", 181 lbs, 4.46 forty); Ohio State (offered) leads. Scott is yet another in the long line of athletes who will matriculate to a Division I program from Glenville High. Cordale has excellent size for a wide receiver, and he should be a featured member of the Tarblooders' offense. Like most Glenville kids, Scott favors Ohio State, and very few people doubt that he will eventually end up in Columbus.

go-bux.bmp
4. Ben Buchanan, Westerville Central (5' 10", 175 lbs); committed to Ohio State on March 2nd. In four years of profiling prospects for Buckeye Planet, Ben Buchanan is the first kicking specialist to make our list. Ben is the top kicking and punting prospect in Ohio for the class of 2008, but he is also an all-around athlete who plays wide receiver, quarterback, and various positions for Central's baseball team. Although kickers are often expected to walk on and earn a scholarship, Buchanan is the rare talent who is worthy of a full-ride.

go-bux.bmp
5. Lamaar Thomas, Fort Washington (Maryland) Friendly (5' 10", 166 lbs, 4.36 forty, 10.30 100m, 21' 6" long jump); Ohio State (offered) leads Illinois (offered). Thomas is a versatile athlete who could play running back, wide receiver, or defensive back at the college level. As a junior, Lamaar accounted for 800 yards from scrimmage, scored 14 touchdowns (7 rushing, 5 receiving, 2 on kick-off returns), and made two interceptions. Update 07/19 - Lamaar visited Ohio State on June 22, and came away so impressed with the school's facilities that he named the Buckeyes his new favorite, surpassing Illinois. Update 07/25 - Lamaar visited Florida for the Friday Night Lights camp, but left Gainesville underwhelmed with the Gators, and re-affirmed that Ohio State is his leader. Update 09/01 - Lamaar continues to maintain that Ohio State is his leader, with Illinois in second place. Thomas will make official visits to Columbus (09/22 vs. Northwestern) and Champaign (09/29 vs. Penn State) before deciding; he may also take one or two other official visits. Update 09/03 - Lamaar will also make an official visit to Maryland (09/15 vs. West Virginia). He says that his three leaders are Ohio State, Illinois, and Maryland, and that those schools are pretty much even.

6. Jeffrey Fuller, McKinley (Texas) Boyd (6' 4", 200 lbs, 4.55 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix (Texas A+M, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, all offered). Jeffrey's father, also named Jeffrey, played defensive back at Texas A+M before becoming a stand-out on the great San Francisco Forty-Niner teams of the 1980's. On film, the younger Fuller looks like a man amongst boys. His frame is obvious (long arms, big hands, sleek build), and he utilizes those advantages well. He shows an adequate burst, good straight-line speed, excellent hands and body control, and decent open field ability after making the catch. Jeffrey is definitely a top-tier athlete whose stock is on the rise after a tremendous showing at the recent Rivals combine in Fort Worth, Texas. While his father's alma mater will be tough to beat, Jeffrey also has serious interest in major programs like Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, and Ohio State. Update 09/01 - Jeff will make official visits to Oklahoma (09/08 vs Miami), Florida (09/15 vs. Tennessee), and Ohio State (10/20 vs Michigan State).

7. Martin Bayless, Chula Vista (California) Castle Park (6' 3", 190 lbs, 4.53 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix (Cal, Southern Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Texas, Texas A+M, Florida, Michigan, none offered). Martin's father (also named Martin) has been involved with the NFL for the past 23 years (14 seasons as a defensive back, 3 in the front office, 6 as a coach). So far, the younger Bayless is following in his father's footsteps, as he has had a successful high school career as a safety, wide receiver, and special teams performer. This summer, the Bayless family are moving from California to Texas, but Martin's father also has strong ties to Ohio (grew up in Dayton, attended Bowling Green). Right now, Martin's recruitment is just starting to take off, but expect Ohio State to be in the mix for a while.

8. D.J. Woods, Strongsville, Ohio (6' 0", 169 lbs, 4.35 forty); Nebraska soft verbal. As a junior, D.J. caught 35 passes for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns; made 49 tackles and 3 interceptions; and returned 4 kicks for touchdowns. Woods began the year as a sleeper, but emerged as a legitimate Big Ten prospect at the NHSASC Combine, where he posted a 4.35 forty time and displayed outstanding skills at both wide receiver and cornerback. Update 07/28 - Woods received a Buckeye offer, and promptly committed to Nebraska. Update 09/01 - Woods made an unofficial visit to Ohio State to see the Youngstown State game. Afterwards, DJ stated that he was no longer a firm commitment to Nebraska, and implied that the Buckeyes were back in the running.

9. Orhian Johnson, Gulfport (Florida) Boca Ciega (6' 4", 184 lbs, 4.57 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix (South Florida, Florida International, Indiana, Cincinnati, UConn, Kansas, all offered). Johnson plays quarterback in high school, but he will likely switch positions at the next level, with some posibilities being wide receiver or safety. Orhian is planning to make an unofficial visit to Ohio State on September 8th (Akron game), and may also take an official visit to Columbus later in the year.

Big Speed

1. Terrelle Pryor, Jeannette, Pennsylvania (6' 6", 220 lbs, 4.4 forty); Ohio State (offered) leads (West Virginia, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, Florida, all offered). Pryor is one of the top recruits in the country, regardless of position. As the quarterback for his high school squad, Terrelle completed 92 of 163 attempts (56.4%) for 1,732 yards and 15 touchdowns, and rushed 197 times for 1,676 yards (8.7 average) and 28 touchdowns; he also had a TD receiving. Although he is already being compared to Vince Young, Pryor is also one of the nation's top basketball recruits (he originally committed to Pitt for basketball), and he is the rare athlete who might get a chance to play both sports in college. Location will definitely be a factor in Terrelle's recruitment, as he does not want to be more than a six-hour drive from home. Ohio State is currently in good shape here, but it is a long way till Signing Day. Update 07/19 - Terrelle attended Ohio State's senior camp, and came away impressed with the school, the coaches, and the Buckeye verbals who were also in attendance. It is safe to say that Ohio State currently leads, but that every major school in the country will continue to pursue Pryor to the bitter end (and maybe even after that). Update 09/01 - Not much new to report, but most sources continue to state that Ohio State leads. However, don't expect a decision any time soon.

go-bux.bmp
2. Jake Stoneburner, Dublin Coffman (6' 6", 223 lbs, 4.54 forty, 4.37 shuttle); committed to Ohio State on March 26th. During his junior season, Stoneburner emerged as one of the top receiver prospects in the state of Ohio, as he made 63 receptions for 948 yards and 8 touchdowns. Although Jake might grow into a tight end some day, he is currently being recruited as a wide out, where he is able to use his excellent combination of size and speed to create serious mismatches for the defense. Stoneburner is a teammate of top offensive line prospect Mike Adams, who has also committed to Ohio State.

go-bux.bmp
3. Andrew Sweat, Washington (Pennsylvania) Trinity (6' 2", 225 lbs, 4.55 forty); committed to Ohio State on May 31st, selecting the Buckeyes over Florida, Notre Dame, and Penn State. After posting 165 tackles, 13 TFL's, 4 sacks, and 2 interceptions as a junior, Sweat quickly gained notoriety on the recruiting scene and solidified himself as a top ten recruit in the state of Pennsylvania. Sweat attends the same high school as current Buckeye tight end Andy Miller.

go-bux.bmp
4. Devoe Torrence, Massillon Washington (6' 2", 220 lbs, 4.4 forty); committed to Ohio State on March 20th. Devoe is the younger brother of 2007 Buckeye signee Devon Torrence. As a junior, Devoe logged 981 yards rushing, 645 yards receiving, and 17 total TD's, to go along with 127 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and an interception on defense. At the college level, Devoe could play either running back or linebacker, although he would prefer to line up on the offensive side of the ball, and Coach Tressel will give him the opportunity to do so.

5. Shayne Hale, Pittsburgh Gateway (6' 4", 218 lbs, 4.5 forty); Ohio State (offered) in top 4 (Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia, all offered). Hale is on track to be one of the top linebacker prospects in the 2008 recruiting class; as a junior, he was named first team All State after recording 105 tackles, 13 TFL's, 5 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles while playing against premier competition. Shayne admits to being a fan of the Buckeyes, but his teammate and cousin, Cameron Saddler, keeps insisting that the two of them will definitely be attending the same school, and Saddler doesn't have a Buckeye offer (although he does have offers from the other three of Hale's finalists). Where this puts Ohio State is anyone's guess at this point, but Hale has never fully endorsed the notion of a "package deal" with Saddler. Update 09/01 - Shayne has scheduled official visits to Michigan (09/15 vs. Notre Dame); Virginia (09/22 vs. Georgia Tech); and West Virginia (10/20 vs. Mississippi State); Shayne also wants to make an official visit to Ohio State (date unspecified).

go-bux.bmp
6. Nathan Williams, Washington Court House Miami Trace (6' 5", 245 lbs, 4.67 forty); committed to Ohio State on April 24th. Williams is currently a running back and inside linebacker for Miami Trace, but he will certainly outgrow those positions and play on the defensive line at Ohio State. Nate quickly established himself as one of the top players in Ohio by being selected to the All-State team in 2005, a recognition which he repeated after the 2006 season in which he recorded 149 tackles including 24 for losses. Nathan committed to the Buckeyes on the date he was offered.

go-bux.bmp
7. Nic DiLillo, Madison, Ohio (6' 5", 225 lbs, 4.6 forty); committed to Ohio State on July 30th. After making 46 receptions for 580 yards and 4 touchdowns as a junior, DiLillo established himself as one of the top tight end prospects in the nation. Nic's journey to Columbus can truly be described as a recruiting odyssey: Although he always favored Ohio State, Nic committed to Clemson back in April, when it appeared that the Buckeyes weren't interested in him. Then, when he realized how far away Clemson is from northeast Ohio both geographically and culturally, DiLillo decommitted from the Tigers and committed to Pitt in June. Finally, on July 26th, Ohio State extended an offer, Nic accepted it within days, and everything worked out in the end.

8. Etienne Sabino, Miami Dr. Krop (6' 3", 228 lbs, 4.74 forty); Ohio State (offered) in top 8 (Miami, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina, Southern Cal, LSU, all offered). After posting 130 tackles and 9 sacks from his linebacker position, Sabino was recognized as one of the top overall prospects in the country. After a midwest trip this summer, Etienne dropped Notre Dame (thought to be a leader), and raved about Ohio State (thought to be a long shot). Sabino will make a return (official) visit to Columbus on November 3rd for the Wisconsin game, and will also make official visits to Southern Cal, Florida, and possibly two other schools (with North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, LSU, and Miami being the main contenders). Ohio State is still a dark horse, but at least one of Dr. Krop's coaches (Sonny Spielman, father of Buckeye legend Chris Spielman) will be in the Buckeyes' corner. Update 09/03 - Etienne made an official visit to Southern Cal to watch the Trojans game against the Idaho Vandals. He did not appear overly impressed with his visit.

9. Quinton Coples, Kinston, North Carolina (6' 7", 235 lbs, 4.8 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix (Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, East Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, all offered). At 6-foot-7 with good speed and agility, Coples makes an intriguing defensive end prospect, even if he is a bit un-polished. Last season, Quinton made only 63 tackles and 7 sacks in a "read-and-react" defense, but he has shown enough athleticism and big play ability to have attracted offers from major programs around the country. Currently, Ohio State leads, despite the fact that Coples has never been to Columbus. However, never count the southern schools out, especially on their home turf. In addition, academics will be an issue (2.3 core GPA, no test score) that might cause the Buckeyes to cool somewhat. Update 09/01 - Quinton has transferred to Hargrave Military Academy due to academic concerns (the aforementioned 2.3 core GPA). Although Coples still wants to take an official visit to Ohio State, it is unlikely that the Buckeyes will continue serious pursuit until Quinton can prove himself in the classroom.

Power

go-bux.bmp
1. Mike Adams, Dublin Coffman (6' 7", 308 lbs); committed to Ohio State on March 10th. Adams is clearly the top o-line prospect in Ohio for the class of 2008, and he will be one of the most highly-ranked linemen in the nation. People are already comparing Adams (a tackle prospect) to past greats such as Alex Boone, Korey Stringer, and even Orlando Pace. Along with Michael Brewster, Adams is the leader of the "Block O", Ohio State's celebrated group of offensive line recruits.

go-bux.bmp
2. Michael Brewster, Orlando Edgewater (6' 6", 305 lbs, 4.63 shuttle); committed to Ohio State on April 23rd. Brewster is one of the top offensive line prospects in the entire country (he projects as an interior lineman in college), and he plays for one of Florida's top high school programs. By staying in constant contact with other Buckeye recruits, Mike has been dubbed Ohio State's "unofficial recruiting coordinator". Update 09/01 - Michael will make an unofficial visit to Ohio State for the Michigan State game (October 20th), and an official visit for the Wisconsin game (November 3rd).

go-bux.bmp
3. J.B. Shugarts, Klein, Texas (6' 7", 299 lbs, 4.69 shuttle); committed to Ohio State on April 24th. Shugarts is yet another "blue chip" offensive line prospect who has already committed to Ohio State. J.B. attends the same high school as former Buckeye cornerback Ashton Youboty. Update 09/01 - J.B. is scheduled to make his official visit to Ohio State on November 3rd for the Wisconsin game. Rumors continue to persist that J.B. is interested in LSU, but Shugarts continues to deny those rumors.

4. Josh Jenkins, Parkersburg (West Virginia) Vienna (6' 3", 282 lbs, 4.62 shuttle); Ohio State (offered) trails West Virginia (soft verbal). Jenkins, a two-way lineman, is clearly the top player in the state of West Virginia, and one of the most highly-ranked prospects nationally. Although Josh will likely play on the offensive line in college, he has posted some impressive numbers on defense: 82 tackles, 10 TFL's, and 4 sacks, which earned him All-State honors as a sophomore. Jenkins made an early commitment to the home state school, but due to some coaching changes, he has recently re-opened his recruitment; since then, many major programs (including Ohio State) have been quick to send offers. Update 09/01 - Josh will make two unofficial visits to Ohio State during the season (09/22 vs. Northwestern and 11/03 vs. Wisconsin), and will take his official visit to Columbus during the first weekend in December. Jenkins also wants to take official visits to Florida, Florida State, West Virginia, and possibly a fifth school.

go-bux.bmp
5. Garrett Goebel, Lombard (Illinois) Montini Catholic (6' 5", 270 lbs); committed to Ohio State on July 27th, selecting the Buckeyes over the Michigan Wolverines. Like 2006 Buckeye signee Dexter Larimore, Goebel is a both a top-notch defensive tackle and a state-champion wrestler. Although Garrett would be a college star in either sport, he plans to play football exclusively at Ohio State. Update 09/01 - Garrett will be a frequent visitor at Ohio State this fall, including on September 1st for the Buckeyes' season opener against Youngstown State.

florida-state.bmp
6. Kyle Long, Charlottesville (Virginia) St. Anne's-Bellfield (6' 7", 280 lbs); committed to Florida State to play baseball. Kyle Long is the son of former Raider great and NFL Hall-of-Famer Howie Long. Although Kyle lives in Charlottesville and his older brother plays for Al Groh at the University of Virginia, it has long been rumored that Ohio State is his favorite football program. Both Kyle and Howie are "fans" of Jim Tressel, and that fact will certainly help the Buckeyes in their recruitment of this outstanding two-way lineman prospect. Update 05/15 - At this point, Kyle intends to play baseball only in college, and he committed to Florida State to play for the Seminoles' baseball squad. If Kyle should change his mind and decide to play football, then Ohio State would immediately jump back into the picture. Update 09/01 - With football season now back in full swing, will Kyle still stay committed to baseball? Don't be surprised if the Longs show up at the 'Shoe some time this season.

7. Willie Mobley, Eden Prairie, Minnesota (6' 2", 264 lbs); Ohio State (offered) in top 5 (Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, UCLA, all offered). Mobley, a defensive tackle prospect, is a relatively new offeree who is starting to generate a lot of interest amongst the top programs in the midwest. Last season, Willie led his team to a 14-0 record and a Class 5A state championship. The Golden Gophers will put on a full court press to keep Mobley at home, but the top prospects from Minnesota often end up leaving the state (there are many examples, including James Laurinaitis, who signed with Ohio State in 2005). Update 09/01 - Many insiders think that Ohio State leads, but Willie has also expressed serious interest in Minnesota and UCLA.

8. Justin Thompson, El Camino Community College (6' 5", 290 lbs); Ohio State (offered) in top 3 (Miami, LSU, both offered). Justin originally made a verbal commitment to Miami back in April but he has since re-opened his recruitment. Although Thompson is still considered to be a Hurricane "soft verbal", he has already scheduled official visits to OSU and LSU for this October. Although Ohio State doesn't generally sign JUCO players, Justin is reportedly at the top of the Buckeye coaches' wish list. Update 09/01 - Justin has scheduled official visits to Ohio State (October 25th, mid-week), LSU (October 6th, vs Florida), and Nebraska (no date set).

9. Ben Jones, Miami Northwestern (6' 6", 280 lbs, 5.22 forty); Ohio State (offered) in top 3 (Miami, LSU, both offered). As a sophomore at Miami Springs, Jones racked up 60 tackles and 10 sacks. However, after transferring to Miami Northwestern at the end of the year, Ben suffered a knee injury and missed his entire junior season. Despite the forced lay off, Jones is still one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the country. The Miami Hurricanes will be tough to beat, but LSU and OSU will also get official visits.

The Buckeyes' Top Prospects for 2008

October Edition

2008OSUFBRecruits10-22.jpg

Since our last update, Ohio State has picked up a verbal commitment from one wide receiver prospect, Lamaar "Flash" Thomas (Fort Washington, Maryland), but lost out on two others: Mike Floyd (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Jeffrey Fuller (McKinley, Texas). With twelve recruits already committed, the Buckeyes have two-thirds of their class full, and most of the remaining spots could be secured in the near future. Last weekend, Ohio State hosted two prospects on official visits, linebacker Etienne Sabino and cornerback Travis Howard, who are teammates at Miami Dr. Krop School. After a week on the road, the Buckeyes will return to Columbus for a November 3rd showdown with Wisconsin, and in attendance will be a number of talented recruits, including current verbal commitments offensive lineman Michael Brewster (Orlando, Florida); offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts (Klein, Texas), linebacker Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pennsylvania); offensive lineman Mike Adams (Dublin Coffman); and wide receiver Jake Stoneburner. The "Brew Crew" will be making their sales pitch to two key uncommitted recruits who will also be in town that weekend: Pennsylvania quarterback Terrelle Pryor, West Virginia offensive lineman Josh Jenkins, and Minnesota defensive lineman Willie Mobley.

Speed

1. Mike Floyd, St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall (6' 3", 195 lbs, 4.55 forty); committed to Notre Dame. Update 10/22 - During the past month or so, Floyd had moved Ohio State to the top of his list. However, a few days after fellow wide receiver prospect Lamaar Thomas committed to the Buckeyes, Mike returned to his original favorite and pledged to Notre Dame.

Like most Glenville kids, Scott favors Ohio State, and very few people doubt that he will eventually end up in Columbus.

Although kickers are often expected to walk on and earn a scholarship, Buchanan is the rare talent who is worthy of a full-ride. Update 10/07 - Ben was selected to the Army All-American team.

5. Lamaar Thomas, Fort Washington (Maryland) Friendly (5' 10", 166 lbs, 4.36 forty, 10.30 100m, 21' 6" long jump); committed to Ohio State on October 18th. Update 09/03 - Lamaar will also make an official visit to Maryland (09/15 vs. West Virginia). He says that his three leaders are Ohio State, Illinois, and Maryland, and that those schools are pretty much even. Update 10/18 - Despite a late push from the hometown school, Lamaar held firm with his long-time favorite and committed to Ohio State.

6. Jeffrey Fuller, McKinley (Texas) Boyd (6' 4", 200 lbs, 4.55 forty); committed to Oklahoma. Update 09/01 - Jeff will make official visits to Oklahoma (09/08 vs Miami), Florida (09/15 vs. Tennessee), and Ohio State (10/20 vs Michigan State). Update 09/12 - Immediately after his official visit to Oklahoma, Jeffrey committed to the Sooners and canceled his remaining visits.

Update 10/22 - No news here - it appears that the Buckeyes have moved on.

8. Update 10/22 - Woods had surgery on his lower back to remove a possible tumor, which effectively ended his senior season. D.J. is still committed to Nebraska, and the Huskers have shown no signs of backing out of their scholarship offer despite his medical condition.

Update 10/22 - Johnson made an unofficial visit to Columbus for the Michigan State game. Although he enjoyed his trip, it seems like Orhian might be in a bit of a holding pattern with respect to Ohio State.

NEW! 10. Travis Howard, Miami Dr. Krop (6' 1", 185 lbs, 4.43 forty); Ohio State (not offered) in the mix. Travis is a teammate of Buckeye offeree Etienne Sabino, and both players made official visits to Columbus for the Michigan State game last weekend. At this point, Howard does not have an offer from Ohio State, but after his official visit, he declared the Buckeyes to be his leader. If Ohio State doesn't offer, then Travis will have plenty of top programs to choose from, including Miami, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech. Travis has good size for a cornerback, which is always a plus at Ohio State.

Big Speed

Update 10/22 - The longer this battle goes on, the more that the Buckeyes look to be the vicotrs. Terrelle will make an official visit to Columbus for the Wisconsin game. The Brew Crew will also be in attendance, doing their best to gain a verbal commitment from the nation's top overall prospect.

go-bux.bmp

Update 10/22 - Andrew will make his official visit on November 3rd, for the Wisconsin game.

go-bux.bmp

Update 10/22 - The Buckeyes have not been in touch recently, leading us to believe that the staff has moved in a different direction (see Sabino, Etienne).

go-bux.bmp

Update 10/22 - Sabino, along with his high school teammate Travis Howard, made an official visit for the Michigan State game. Although Etienne has kept his feelings very close to the vest, many observers now feel that Ohio State is in the lead. Still waiting for post-visit reports....

Update 10/22 - Quinton's finalists are North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, and Florida State.

NEW! Greg Scruggs, Cincinnati St. Xavier (6' 5", 230 lbs, 4.7 forty); Ohio State (not offered) in the mix. Greg's story sounds like something out of a movie script: He gave up football in the sixth grade, and joined the marching band in high school. After a few of class mates convinced him to try out for the football squad for his senior season, Scruggs simply blew up on the gridiron, displaying freakish athletic ability at both tight end and defensive end. Miami of Ohio offered him immediately, and several other programs are now showing some interest, including Boston College, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Michigan State, and Ohio State. Greg has emerged from out of the blue, so it's difficult to get a handle on his recruiting status.

Power

go-bux.bmp

Update 10/22 - Still tough to call this one, as many factors points toward Ohio State, but some others point away. Willie would like to visit Columbus for the Wisconsin game on November 3rd.

Update 10/22 - Not much Ohio State buzz any more. It is possible that the Buckeye staff has moved on.

Update 10/22 - Ben is still considering an official visit to Ohio State, but nothing has been set up yet.

The Buckeyes' Top Prospects for 2008

November Edition

2008OSUFBRecruits10-22.jpg

A quick update on some uncommitted prospects (and the Buckeyes' newest commitment) as the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes head into their biggest recruiting weekend of the year.

Speed

1. Update 11/02 - No one seriously doubts that Cordale will be a Buckeye come February.

2. Update 10/22 - Woods had surgery on his lower back to remove a possible tumor, which effectively ended his senior season. D.J. is still committed to Nebraska, and the Huskers have shown no signs of backing out of their scholarship offer despite his medical condition. Update 11/02 - After a lot of noise about de-committing, Woods finally pulled the plug on the Cornhuskers. However, the Buckeyes are no longer interested. No idea where Woods end up at this point, but it won't be Ohio State.

3. Update 10/22 - Johnson made an unofficial visit to Columbus for the Michigan State game. Although he enjoyed his trip, it seems like Orhian might be in a bit of a holding pattern with respect to Ohio State. Update 11/02 - Ohio State is still in the mix, with the Buckeye staff being interested in Johnson as an athlete, possibly on defense.

4. Travis Howard, Miami Dr. Krop (6' 1", 185 lbs, 4.43 forty); committed to Ohio State on October 26th. Update 11/02 - It was quite a week for Travis Howard - on Saturday the 20th, he made his official visit to Ohio State; a few days later he received his official offer, and by Friday the 26th, he had committed to the Buckeyes.

5. Kenny Tate, Hyattsville (Maryland) Dematha (6' 4", 210 lbs, 4.4 forty); Ohio State (offered) in the mix. While Tate hasn't posted outstanding statistics in high school (362 yards rushing, 365 yards receiving, 10 total TD's as a junior), he has the "off the charts" measurables that all college coaches are looking for. Ohio State is thought to be Kenny's early leader, but many other programs are in hot pursuit, including Florida (offered), Maryland (offered), Illinois (offered), Notre Dame, and Penn State. A reported 2.5 GPA may be some cause for concern. Update 03/30 - Kenny's offer list looks like a Who's Who of college football. Expect one of the "glamour" programs (USC, Florida, Texas, Notre Dame, etc.) to get a commitment from Tate, probably late in the process. Illinois has done well in the DC area in recent years, so the Illini might be a dark horse in this race. Update 11/02 - Quite frankly, we'd written this kid off months ago. However, his name has been popping up again recently. Probably not a whole lot of mutal interest just yet, especially with the Buckeyes running out of slots for this class, but worth keeping an eye on....

Big Speed

Update 11/02 - Pryor will make his official visit to Ohio State this weekend, and there is some hope that he will commit to the Buckeyes during the visit. The "Brew Crew" will all be on hand trying to make Terrelle feel at home in the Horseshoe.

2. Update 10/22 - The Buckeyes have not been in touch recently, leading us to believe that the staff has moved in a different direction (see Sabino, Etienne). Update 11/02 - Still hard to figure out what's going on here. Hale is scheduled to make an official visit to Virginia this weekend, to Michigan on November 17th for The Game, and to West Virginia on December 1st for the Backyard Brawl against Pitt. Shayne has not yet set up an official visit with Ohio State, but the Buckeyes remain in his final four.

3. Update 10/22 - Sabino, along with his high school teammate Travis Howard, made an official visit for the Michigan State game. Although Etienne has kept his feelings very close to the vest, many observers now feel that Ohio State is in the lead. Still waiting for post-visit reports.... Update 11/02 - Sabino has narrowed his choices to Ohio State and Southern Cal. Most observes feel that the Buckeyes will win this battle, especially now that Etienne's high school teammate, Travis Howard, has already pledged to OSU. Sabino will make his formal announcement November 8th on ESPN.

4. Update 11/02 - Scruggs keeps picking up offers, and the Buckeyes remain interested. No visits scheduled yet.

Power

1. Update 11/02 - It appears that Jenkins will make an official visit to Florida this weekend, and not attend the OSU-Wisconsin game in Columbus.

2. Update 11/02 - Still some hope here....

3. Update 10/22 - Still tough to call this one, as many factors points toward Ohio State, but some others point away. Willie would like to visit Columbus for the Wisconsin game on November 3rd. Update 11/02 - Most people think that Willie is going to commit to Ohio State during or shortly after his official visit to Columbus this weekend.

4. Brandon Thompson, Thomasville, Georgia (6' 2", 291 lbs, 4.69 shuttle); Ohio State (not offered) trails Clemson. Simply put, Thompson is a beast - he is big, strong, agile, and nasty with an extremely explosive first step that routinely lands him in the opponent's backfield. Brandon is both a disruptive force and a solid tackler - a good combination in an interior lineman. On the down side, Brandon does show a tendency to play high and relies a bit too much on his overpowering raw strength at the expense of technique. Update 11/02 - We've been tracking this kid since the summer, and until a few weeks ago, Thompson was considered to be a Clemson lock. However, he suddenly and surprisingly decided to take an official visit to Ohio State this weekend. Clemson still leads, but a great visit to Columbus, with the Brew Crew on hand, could sway Brandon.

4. Travis Howard, Miami Dr. Krop (6' 1", 185 lbs, 4.43 forty); committed to Ohio State on October 26th. Update 11/02 - It was quite a week for Travis Howard - on Saturday the 20th, he made his official visit to Ohio State; a few days later he received his official offer, and by Friday the 26th, he had committed to the Buckeyes.

Not to be picky, but the graphic needs to be updated with Howard's commit...

Quick question to the recruiting team: Kyle Long's update reads as "Still some hope here..." despite his two sport commitment to FSU. Is this "hope" legitimate (as in, have there been documented events/rumors that lead to this assumption), or are Buckeye fans just -- for lack of a better term -- desperate?

Just to clarify, his FSU commitment is for baseball...not both baseball and football.
