So, we've had 8 games without an offensive TD in 95 total games under Tressel, if I counted correctly. That's one out of every 11.875 games, or approximately one per year.

Anyone with more time or effort than me want to see how that compares to other teams around the country? Or, if you're even more ambitious, see who has the highest winning percentage in games without an offensive TD. I'd think 5 out of 8 wins has got to be near the top.

Good work - missed only two. There were 98 total.

20 to 29 yards
18 passes, 7 runs

30 to 39 yards
26 passes, 6 runs

40 to 49 yards
12 passes, 5 runs

50 to 59 yards
12 passes, 7 runs

60 to 69 yards
4 passes, 6 runs

70 to 79 yards
2 passes, 1 run

80 to 89 yards
2 passes

What's really interesting is that Ohio State has had 46 offensive touchdowns of 40 yards or greater during the Tressel era - that's an average of one "home run" play every other game (46/96), which isn't too bad for an "ultra-conservative" offense.

Overall, Ohio State lives off of big plays - of the 341 touchdowns scored under the Tressel regime, 134 have been of the "big play" variety (offensive TD's of 20+ yards, defensive and special teams TD's) - that means that nearly forty percent of Ohio State's scoring comes on big plays.

If you want a synopsis of Tressel Ball, it is this: use your defense and special teams to win the battle of field position, and occasionally to score; pound the opponent into submission with the running game; don't make mistakes in or near the red zone (i.e., kick field goals); score touchdowns on big plays.

If you add in "big play" touchdowns on special teams, then Ted Ginn becomes the leader with 21 (12 receptions, 6 punt returns, 2 kick-off returns, 1 rush) ... and of course he threw a 38-yard pass to Rory Nicol, meaning that he was responsible for 22 big play TD's during his Ohio State career. I imagine that that would be a Buckeye record for a non-QB.

BTW, Troy Smith was responsible for 30 big play touchdowns (28 passes, 2 runs).
