The Ann Arbor Experience

Observations from the scUM student section

Fortunately I was able to score some tickets to the Game Friday night. They were in scUM's student section, so I guess I'll start my comments there. To provide a frame of reference, the student section is in the NE corner of the stadium (bottom left hand corner of the field, if you're watching on TV), and I was just to the left of the strip of fellow Buckeye fans that ran from the field to the top of the stadium.

Let me start off by saying their crowd didn't impress me much. They put all their students in one corner of the stadium. Therefore, that corner is pretty loud, but the fans in the rest of the stadium largely are sitting on their hands the entire game. Accordingly, when the student section does cheer, it is basically one portion of the student section yelling "Go" and the other portion yelling "Blue." To the extent that it's basically just this one corner, it's highly ineffective to create much sound throughout the stadium, unlike our "OH" and "IO" or our "O" "H" "I" "O" cheer which covers the entire field. Additionally, their crowd is really only into the game if they're winning. I was seriously shocked at how quiet the place was when we were up 9-0. You would have thought that we were winning 35-0, b/c there was literally no noice, besides my yelling for the Bucks. Pretty sad when the only noise coming out of your student section is that supporting your most hated rival. Bottom line: our crowd energy and noise blows theirs out of the water.

Onto the game:

Troy Smith was phenomenal. From the beginning of the game, I was incredibly impressed with his poise in light of the adversity that we faced. He marched us down the length of the field at the beginning of the game when we started in the only portion of the stadium where their weak student section was a slight factor. And the way he calmly led us down the field when we needed two scores late in the game was nothing short of fabulous. I seriously couldn't believe how many times I thought he was surrounded by scUM defenders looking at the whole field, and yet he broke through for a big play. The 16 yard run down the sideline on 3rd and 10 in the first 4th quarter TD drive, the spin move he put on a scUM defender to hit Ginn for a 1st down in the second 4th quarter TD drive, and his quickly backpedaling and shooting to the sideline before hitting Gonzalez for the big 26 yard pass were unbelievable. I don't know if it was the fact that he had played well the entire game with great poise, but seriously, I had this feeling as we took over on the last drive of the game that everything was going to be ok and he would win the game for us as I saw him line up behind center, notwithstanding the fact that we had 80 some yards to go. Troy is a great athlete, he's a winner, and he's a leader.

Schlegel was all over the place. I go to all our games at home, and I've never seen him play with such speed. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an outstanding LB and has been great all year, but yesterday he was flying around the field and covering ground like you wouldn't believe. And the way that he was hitting scUM's ballcarriers was amazing. It says a lot for Anthony's intelligence and character that a kid from Texas can understand the magnitude of this rivalry and step his game up when the time comes.

Which brings me to JT. I think it also says a lot for JT's ability to convey the importance of the Game to the team, and get them fired up for it. When it comes to the Game, JT just gets it. He understands what exactly the Game means to tOSU, the state of Ohio, and tOSU's fans throught the country, Buckeye Nation. 4-1 is all I can say.

So many guys made huge plays, I wish I could list them all. From AJ playing his usual All-American, best LB in the nation football, to Salley's perfect timing on a pass breakup that would've given scUM a first down and a huge 20 yard gain, to Rob Harley's tackling Breaston on the 16 yard line on a kickoff.

Finally, and most importantly, the post-game. That tOSU section of the stadium after the game was like one big party. We broke out into a verse of "We don't give a damn about the whole state of Michigan," numerous rounds of "O-H" "I-O," and countless other cheers. One of the best things was watching all the scUM students silently walking out of the stadium as we went nuts, the same students that I had to listen to sing "Hail to the Victors" about a hundred times, and silently stand there was they swore at me, fellow tOSU fans, and the team. But by far the best part of the day was watching and singing along as the band played "Carmen Ohio" to the players in the middle of the field after the game. Just think about that moment for a second: we come back from down 9 at scUM with about 7 minutes to go for a big win, and then we sing the alma mater on their field. It was magic, I'm telling you--a moment I'll never, ever forget.

Buckeyeboy, nice post. Great observations on Schlegel, Harley, and Salley for their play yesterday.

There is an apology thread created for those who have been critical of Troy Smith in the past. Well I have been critical of Mr. Schlegel at times, and I am more than happy to take all of that back and salute Schlegel for an unbelievable performance yesterday.

Went in '03 terrible experience
Decided I won't be back unless NC on the line, or if I'm strapped with C4

Key shaking by the scum fans was icing on the cake

i couldnt agree with you more. first off, before the game i heard some really smart, intelligent comments from wonderful michigan fans such as "Ohio State sucks, i hope your mom gets syphilis(sp?)" afterwards he even said to his friend as i walked away, "i wish he would have said something so i could have kicked his ass"
Michigan Fan- Do you have any tobacco so i can throw in a fat lip
Me-No
Michigan Fan- Well Ohio State sucks anyway.
and my personal favorite "Oh not good enough to go to michigan so you go to ohio state" I told the guy i was in HS still and he told me that he was just kidding and that he respects OSU and really loves Ginn(which he pronounced Gin)-just a bunch of assholes.

But the stadium is the ultimiate POS. surrounded by the most ignorant fans ever, we had guys to my right who had to fit their buddies in the section that did not have tickets in the section so it was impossible to move. if you got up to stand, you lost your seat and would not be able to sit back down. i hate the place ever more than i do ever after that experience and like you said would only go back for a NC decision game or something to that effect.

it was still all worth it when the fans finally realized after the gonzalez catch that the game might be over. that was the greatest feeling ever!

Well I sat in section 4 which is diagonial across the entire field from the students and for having som many people in that hell hole of a place, it was very quiet. I have been to many other stadiums around the country for MAC games and thought their was more crowd noise. The only place the rivals the 'Shoe in terms of crowd noise was the Swamp. It being alot like the "Shithouse" mostly underground it was very loud when it gets going.

For my experience in Ann Arbor was awesome less one or two things. We, myself and 9 other friends that went to the game with me, went to a tailgate about 3 blocks from the stadium that was hosted by a group of scUM grad students. They were awesome people to talk to and hang with. Nothing said but some sound disagreement on who was a better team and the outcome. The only real problem we had was the fat guy we passed on the way that broke my buckeye necklace. That one just about started a fight. It would have if it wouldn't have ben for the 3 Ann Arbor police that were on the corner that saw it happen and quickly moved our way.

Friday night I went to Scorekeepers and it was 90% tOSU fans. Awesome enviroment. The only other thing I was surprised about was the number of tOSU fans at the game.

That overpass is just over the Ohio-Michigan border on the good side. Every year the game is in AA a group of Sylvanians (city just outside of Toledo) stand on the overpass and wave Buckeye flags at passing motorists on their way up to the game. I'm guessing this sign was their doing.

This was my second trip up there. In 03 we lost, that was no fun. This time was much better.

The only smack talk I got into was not all that bad. They asked me what living on a Farm was like. I asked them what the fuck a farm was. They backed off and we talked for a while. There was a drunk ex-con looking guy that I wanted no piece of. He would have eaten me for lunch. I STFU and just walked away.

The Stadium is not all that great. It is big...yes. But not much more than a huge bowl shape. Not much unique about it.

The crowd is just fucking weak. I mean embarrassingly quiet. I also have never heard so much bitching and moaning about having to stand up all the time. For fucks sake it is your team out there trying to keep the bucks from coming back, make some fucking noise. The student section is great, the other 70% of the stadium crowd don't add anything to the game.

The Meatchicken fans were expecting to loose. You could feel it. They were not surprised when we came back to win. They all seemed to be in a good mood immediately after the game. If we had lost...well I don't want to even go there.

I remember coming back from ann arbor in 2001 after tressel's first win and seeing a sign right about in this same area with the score on it. I'm guessing it's the same people that do it everytime the bucks go up to there and get it done. Regardless, it's awesome.
