The 2023 Spring Game, Sat. 4/15, 12pm EST, BTN

What I saw today was a bunch of guys having fun more than really working all that hard. The nature of the game kind of does that to them I think.

The linebacking corps is fantastic this year if Steele gets healed up and will still be great if he doesn't. The Dline outplayed the Oline, a lot and guys like Jackson and Kanu are about to emerge onto the seen and be a problem. Thats a very good problem for us. Burke was looking a lot more like his first year than last year today. Safeties didnt have much to do really. The Proctor news is very encouraging so I think they'll be in good shape.

Oline needs to get settled before they'll get better I'm sure. I still would rather have Fryar back at right tackle. He was a beast over there in the time he got there and that would give us an entire side with experience and skill so we could focus on getting the left side sorted this summer. I dont love the switch. RBs looked pretty healthy which is strange and cool at the same time! WR's are the best in the country, shocker. TE's is a very deep unit at the moment. I believe we have 4 who can play but we'll see how that goes come gametime. That leaves the QB's.

McCord had some really good throws but didn't look mobile enough in the backfield for most of the Oline mistakes so there's going to be some growing pains until his reads get better. Gebbia was surprisingly mobile and decisive. His deep balls weren't very good but he is mobile and that might come in handy. Would've liked to see Devin in live action but we'll get that later as well as Dakota when he gets here.

Mirco is going to be one of the best punters in the nation no doubt. The kicking game scared me right off the bat but the second guy up looks like he has a really big leg and it went down the middle so I'll take that. Ballard back returning kicks is very intriguing. I know Emeka is going to be back there a lot but if Ballard gets a crease he can easily bust one.

4 months to think about the possibilities and wring our hands over stuff now. What did I miss?

I see the Spring game as a reward for putting in the offseason work. Of course coaches will use it as another teaching tool, but getting the chance to play in the Shoe in front of a crowd has to definitely be more fun than practicing in the WHAC.

The best thing to me is when no one gets injured in it. Trying to read much into the level of play doesn't seem practical to me.

Only thing that concerned me other then McCord looking a little stiff mobility wise was looked like a few receivers and RBs turned an ankle and kinda gimped around for a few plays. Hayden and Ballard among them.

I'm kind of surprised that McCord had that good of stats. He threw a lot of balls away to avoid a sack. In addition, he had a couple passes nearly picked off. He might of had some significant rushing yards too if he wasn't down when a defender just touched him.

Powers had a hell of a game, as did Hicks, those guys are looking as good as advertised. LB crew is going to be elite this year.

RYAN DAY

  • On quarterback play, Day says it was "similar to what you see in practice" from Kyle McCord. Day says there were some "sparks" but that not everything was as clean as he wanted it to be. Day said McCord would have benefitted from having Marvin Harrison Jr. on the field longer as well as Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming.
  • On the secondary play, Day says "we've seen that through 15 practices." Day says "everything's faster" on the back end of the Buckeye defense and that he's seen them play "more decisive."
  • On allowing Brian Hartline to call plays for the offense, Day says "we've seen some growth there as well" but that there's "a long way until the fall."
  • On Chip Trayanum's performance, Day says "you saw them put on some weight and be able to carry it. He has some top-end speed." Day jokes that Trayanum still wasn't the top rusher on the day, with Archie Griffin scoring a touchdown in the third quarter.
  • Day says the offensive line play was "inconsistent" but that the good thing is the Buckeye defensive line has been disruptive. "We need more consistency" up front, he says.
  • Day says the Buckeyes were "very vanilla on defense today" and "didn't blitz one time."
  • Day says the top priority for the defense was not giving up a lot of explosives on the back end this spring, and he thinks they accomplished that thus far. "There's reason for optimism, for sure."
  • On McCord's play, Day says his touchdown pass to Carnell Tate was a "step in the right direction."
  • Day says he wants this team's identity to be all about competing, and that he wanted that to "flourish" early in the offseason.
  • Day says "I feel good about where our leadership is right now."
  • Day says Kenyatta Jackson "stepped up" to create depth at defensive end this spring and says he wants more plays to do so on the defensive line, although he isn't particularly concerned about the unit.
  • Day says C.J. Hicks "flashed more" on Saturday and is "making plays, showing up."
