The 2020 College Football Season

So, will the Buckeyes be heading west to face the Ducks? Every effort is going to be made to play that game, that’s for sure. But without substantial progress, the odds are probably starting to favor cancellation with momentum seemingly building for conference-only schedules.

“The perfect scenario is that we have a national solution where there is some consistency,” Smith said. “For example, do we just play conference games? And then what is that number? You would hope that there is a national consistency in that and that it ties into your postseason in some form or fashion and the selection criteria for postseason changes and accommodates that national solution. That is the best scenario. Of course, if you’ve got 12 games then it’s all moot.

“I think we need to not rush this. I know everyone is anxious to do that, but we need to have the opportunity for our medical experts to continue to collect data, see our human behavior responds in the reopening environment across the country. … Different schools will make different decisions about reopening at different times, so we need to allow that to cascade over time. I think somewhere in early July we need to have clarity on what we’re doing.”

Until then, patience will have to keep winning out over predictions.

Oregon is one of the 19 states with a spiking COVID count this week. Possibly a blow to the possibility of that game being scrubbed. Then again, I see ESPN officials trying to sweeten the pay off for the schools and the NCAA. U Washington model released today shows a spike occurring towards the end of September across the nation.

SKULL SESSION: COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON MAY STILL BE IN JEOPARDY, OHIO STATE'S GOT THE BEST DAMN VIDEO COORDINATOR IN THE LAND, AND TREVEYON HENDERSON WANTS TO WIN THREE TITLES

STILL UP IN THE AIR.
The past few weeks I've been pretty much working under the assumption that we'd be getting a college football season, but apparently, we're not quite out of the woods yet.

I hear the concern, but I'll gladly take any even-money wager that we'll have college football this year.

I know folks are getting a little nervous with the MLB and NBA's rocky restarts, but there's one key difference with college football – there's no bargaining. There are no wages to dispute, no contracts to negotiate, and no drastic points of contention. It's in the best interest of all parties to play the season on time. So as long as it can be done, it's going to happen.

The NBA and MLB players have had vocal and valid concerns about their respective restarts, but I just don't see that happening with college football, especially if the season can start on time with as few changes as possible.

So if there ends up being no football, I wonder how bad the domino effect will be on sports that earn next to no revenue... Some athletic departments will be decimated

If any FBS player has died of the virus yet, I haven't heard about it. It's really not that dangerous for the young and healthy.

That, combined with the facts that 1) this has never been a safety-first society, and 2) the magnitude of the economic need... I remain optimistic.

Taking this one point at a time... This society accepts many deaths every year that could be prevented by requiring governors on cars that would let them travel at 20 mph or less and strictly enforcing a universal 20 mph speed limit. There are numerous other examples that you could cite, but let's short cut them all and state the obvious: We will risk at least 10s of thousands of lives if there is sufficient economic impact in it.

And the second point... the economic impact of no season would threaten the livelihoods of some very influential people. Combine that with the first point and you have a recipe for a season. Don't lose hope yet.
