Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

I wonder if Peters looked at Cronin getting a head coaching job after his move and then Sean Miller (Matta's assistant) getting the coaching job at Xavier. I don't following UC that closely, but I don't recall any coach going directly from being Huggins assistant to a D1 head coaching job. Add in the fact that Peters probably thought he was going to get to run the UC program longer than the end of August when Huggins will be reinstated.

I don’t know if being an assistant here is a better job or not, but Peters may be making this move for economic reasons. I'm guessing OSU pays it's assistants substantially more than UC. I know our football assistants are compensated very very well. I know you can’t scale this directly, but Huggins base salary is $185k, while Matta's is $760k. I’m not saying UC’s assistants are mowing lawns on the weekend, but unless Huggins shares his additional compensation I would guess his assistants aren’t rolling in $$$$.

The more I think about this hire I do have a concer. Will this lead to embarrasing headlines like:

"BUCKEYE STAFF FILLED WITH SELECTION OF PETERS"

"OSU PLAYS BETTER WITH PETERS ON THE BENCH"

"PREP STARS FOLLOW PETERS TO OSU"

"MATTA'S NEEDS SATISFIED WITH 50 YEAR OLD PETERS"

(Sorry, based on a very old joke.)

BTW - did anyone notice that while he was HC at YSU Peters had a much better record than HC candidate Jim Cleamons?

I also saw an article on BSB saying that Huggins was irate at the move. I was curious how he was taking it.

Thad Matta (Official Thread)

Per Dave Biddle on BN Matta has a clause that says he will be paid a bonus of $2,000,000 if he stays the whole 7 years at OSU - zip if he does not.

That is an interesting clause that certainly seems positive on the surface. It wouldn't make him think twice about a $43 mil offer from the Lakers, but it would discourage a move to another university.

I would be curious what it says about OSU firing him. If that is not addressed OSU could dump him at the end of 6 years just to save a few bucks if they were so inclined - especially if there was any question about the success of the program (say his performance was comparable to Obrien's). At the same time, OSU has to be able to do something if he is a total bust - as unlikely as I think that is.

Not to borrow trouble, but this clause could become a problem 5 or 6 years from now as well. Other schools would be able to point to the clause and argue that OSU only put the clause in place because they knew he would bolt when he had the chance and that chance is soon - so why go to OSU? (Not that additional incentives aren't an option.)

In any case it looks like Chad will be here for a while.

I'm sure there is some kind of "firing without cause" clause in the contract-ie-he runs a clean ship, but in canned b/c of a lack of wins-he gets the dough. On the other hand, if he pulls an Obie-no cheddar.
