Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

OHIO STATE MEN?S BASKETBALL
Matta gone, not forgotten in Cincinnati
Xavier fans haven?t overcome anger after coach?s departure

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A Cincinnati newspaper columnist on Monday referred to the Ohio State men?s basketball coach as "Xavier turncoat Thad ?Benedict? Matta."
A half-dozen headlines in various sections of the city?s two daily newspapers addressed the potential for a second-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament between the team Matta coaches now and the team he left three years ago.
Outside the newsroom, on the Internet message boards and the talk-show airwaves, Xavier Fan does not seem as obsessed with what could happen. Not yet, anyway.

Does Matta chew tobacco?

Looked like he had a pinch of snuff in while scouting the Xavier-BYU game.

Maybe that's why he chews his gum so violently. Middle of a nic-fit. :p

Xavier saves up Matta zingers

It might get icy when fans turn eyes on coach

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

LEXINGTON, KY. - His ``I am not a candidate'' departure from Xavier in July 2004 put Thad Matta in the company of Butch Davis and Nick Saban as coaches whose exits were less than graceful.
Musketeers fans have waited three years to let Matta know what they thought about that. Chances are they'll holler themselves hoarse to deliver that message today.

It'd be cooler if he just said "Screw you" to 'the man' and chain smoked during games like Jim Leyland.

Matta to Xavier: 'Take care' of coach

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Sunday, March 18, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Xavier University men's basketball coach Sean Miller will get a raise ? if the school takes Ohio State coach Thad Matta's advice.
Minutes after Ohio State's thrilling 78-71 overtime victory Saturday at Rupp Arena, Matta, the former Xavier head coach, lobbied for the one-time assistant he had just bounced from the tourney.

"He's going to be put in a situation that I was in," Matta said. "I think the thing with Xavier, it's a great program. But make no mistake about it. He's going to have options, just like I did."

What's the Matta, hard feelings?

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- There was a moment late in Ohio State's coaching search when Thad Matta was convinced he wasn't going to be the next coach of the Buckeyes. The process had taken a toll on both himself and his players, so he called OSU officials to withdraw his name from consideration.

''The biggest problem was what it was doing to the players,'' he said. ''It wasn't worth it because I didn't like the way it was going and I didn't want to do anything to demean or disrespect the kids at Xavier ... Andy (Geiger) and I had a long conversation and I decided to go (interview) the next day. I'm very, very glad I did.''

NY Times Article

I know the NY Times is not often looked at favorably around these parts, but has anybody read the article written by Pete Thamel on 03/11/07? Peter King @ SI.com mentioned it in his Monday Morning QB article yesterday and said it was a very good read about Matta and Western Carolina in the 1996 NCAA tourney.

I went to the NY Times page to find the article, but of course I would need to pay to read an archived copy of the story. (What a crock)

Anyway- I was wondering if anybody had read it?

came up at lunch today.. thad matta will always be second fiddle to football.. if a UK comes barking, will matta be gone?

No. I think the only college Matta might eventually leave for, if any, would be Indiana since he grew up there. Other than that he's a Buckeye as long as he wants to be.

The NBA comes calling I'm not sure one way or the other, probably not though. Some guys are just made for the college game.
