It is in interesting, and nostalgic, read. Drives home the point that one of the catalysts for this downfall has been the lack of talent being produced in Ohio. Matta certainly seems to be going more Ohio-centric in recruiting, and whether that's by choice, or out of necessity because the oos guys aren't as interested in coming to Columbus is hard to say...though this article certainly tries to spin it as a "return to roots" angle. Ohio isn't particularly loaded over the next couple of classes, so I'm not sure how sound that strategy is. Bottom line, tOSU has had it's best success under Matta relying heavily on oos recruits with Ohio guys added in...Oden, Conley, Turner, Thomas, etc...I don't see any Sully's, Crafts, or maybe even Bufords/Koufos on the horizon in Ohio. Maybe some Lightys, who are great complimentary players, but not somebody you build your team around.
The article fails to note that with returning to a focus on the Ohio kids, Matta isn't even getting the best of them....It is in interesting, and nostalgic, read. I wonder if Crean would have been fired before the end of the season if that would has influenced big Gene's decision regarding Matta. Probably not but something to chew on.
Put me down for a "no" on Ladies Frames.
There are other options to Thad besides big names like Donovan, Crean, etc.. Who was "Thad Matta" before he got the Ohio State job? A successful coach at a mid-major program. He wasn't a big name coach with a pedigree. And yet, you seem to think successful mid-major coaches are not suitable options to follow him at tOSU.
I don't think LitlBuck was suggesting that OSU would have tried to hire Indiana'a trash, but that OSU might not have stayed with the status quo with Indiana and Illinois making moves.
At least I sure as hell hope he wasn't suggesting that.
I was suggesting the message that you quoted from @Poe McKnoe There is no way in hell that I would want that fired coach from Indiana coming to Ohio State. I was just wondering if Big Gene might have been more willing to make a move when he saw the other big moves being made around the conference.I don't know exactly what he was suggesting there, but he's talked about big names like Donovan while dismissing mid-major coaches like Miller. I was just pointing out that Thad Matta was a mid-major coach like Miller when Ohio State hired him. As for Tom Crean? Not in this lifetime, thank you.
Had the projected #1 pick in the draft and led team to a 9-22 record.Just curious since recruiting has really not been Thad or his assistants strong suit as of late, why not try to get a guy like Lorenzo Rhomar? Former UW coach who could recruit like a mofo. Now I don't know if he made Calipari deals or if he's a sleazy recruiter but just throwing it out. Instead of recycling all his old assistants who've left and not don't we'll and come back
Not as head coach but as an assistant coach. Keep Thad but have him replace powlusHad the projected #1 pick in the draft and led team to a 9-22 record.
No thank you.
Geno Auriemma maybe?
