Think this just proves the cycles of CFB. Coaches get old, minds dont work the same. National power houses have a few bad years or a bad decade (soon to be scUM). Last time UT won less than 10 games was 2000, not many teams can say that, that are now considered the elite *cough Florida* *cough Alabama* next two years i think will tell a lot more though.

sure McCoy was better earlier.....but at their best, McCoy wasn't in the same world as Vince Young. Sorry, watch the film. The OSU 2005 defense was perhaps our best under Tressel. We loaded up to keep VY from beating us with his legs. Instead, he beat us with his arm. VY had the best passing performance against a JT team in my opinion outside of Phillip Rivers in 2003. The difference was that Rivers posed no threat running the ball like VY did and the resources we deployed to stop each of them was totally different.

McCoy was a fantastic QB and close to being one for the ages. But for one single year....which is all that I was talking about....Vince Young was the best CFB player I've seen in person. He made some mistakes but more than made up for any of them. He challenged the rest of the team to meet him in offseason workouts at 6:30 am. He was the leader.

And as far as that USC team having issues on defense.....I've read on this site before that USC was chock full of incredible athletes on that team that when they were focused and up for a team, they were absolutely dominant. From what I saw that NC game of USC vs Texas, Vince Young was facing a USC team that was focused and fired up.

They were in a shootout with fresno state. That was a very talented but painfully young and raw defense. It was a lot more than focus that held them back.

Vince Young also needed incredible defense from the longhorns and a lot of luck (hamby, ramonce avoiding a safety) to have a chance to comeback at all.

Vince young was an all time great for one season. The three years before that he was very iffy. He was shut out in his rivalry game in year 3. It was not until the second half of that season that he began to become the legend we remember.

There is no comparison between their talents, but likewise Vince was not in the same galaxy as Colt when talking about entire careers.

I have a similar opinion. Of all the athletes I've ever seen in person, college and pro (45 games or so), Vince Young and Eddie George were absolute freaks of nature and the best I've seen. I left that home Texas game being absolutely amazed by VY. And we did pretty well against him relatively speaking. Those two guys just looked to be at a different level than everyone else on the field, physically and athletically. Marshall Faulk would be the next best I've seen in person, also an amazing talent.

the discussion I had was about one season....as far as careers, McCoy wins. But not by that much of a landslide as you suggest. VY has a NC...Colt doesn't. Frankly, that Texas team in 2005 would have beaten any of Colts' teams in my opinion. And that USC team would have beaten Alabama last year. But, of course, that's all conjecture and academic.

as far as Fresno State....all teams lose focus...ESPECIALLY USC. Ohio State lost to Purdue last year. They sucked and probably not as good as Fresno State. USC focused on O and won shootouts. Ohio State focused on D and won with Tresselball. Pick your poison.

The whole premise of the discussion was the value that VY brought to Mack Brown's legacy. Without VY, Mack would not have won the NC. There was no other single player on the Texas roster that this statement could be said for. It's a shame that Colt McCoy didn't get a chance to play the whole game vs Alabama and possibly cement his name at the top of Longhorn lore. I love Colt McCoy and think he is the type of guy to build a program around. But Vince Young was the best I've ever seen for 1 season.....and I've seen many of them in person including Marshall Faulk while at SDSU.

in the 3 years before his great year of 2005, VY only played two years (redshirted in 2002). The year-three shutout against OU in 2004 was actually only his second year of playing. An ultraconservative game plan by Mack did not help either.

Right, but for an all-world recruit, he was painfully raw during most of those three years.

Both of them had a terrific supporting defense, Colt just had his luck run out on the big stage with the injury. VY got the fortunate breaks that all champions tend to get (UF 08, OSU 03, etc).

USC's D was not very good all season long that year, so I wouldn't say they "lost focus" for just one game

they were 27th in scoring D and 40th in total defense......

Gotta say, I don't (or didn't) see it. Alabama dominated that game. Colt might have kept it competitive, but Texas wasn't going to win that game.

Texas was losing by three in the fourth, and that was after Gilbert was a trainwreck for an entire half - like almost any frosh would be in that scenario.

In no world was that game out of reach for a Texas squad with a competent QB for four quarters.

Bama' had zero response for the Texas passing game & traditionally haven't been/are not very good against quick striking and accurate QB's ala Colt McCoy.

Gilbert was a subpar QB as a Sophmore with a full year under his belt and still nearly pulled it off as a truly inexperience frosh. The Texas defense played very inspired football after McCoy went out. Give the game back to your star QB and let that defense have time to rest, I think the Longhorns would have pulled out the W myself.
