Game Thread Texas at tOSU, Sat. Aug. 30th, TBA

Additionally, I think the players and coaches need to remember that this game is pretty much meaningless. A loss - regardless of the margin - won't kill Ohio State's chances of getting into the playoffs. The most it could do is knock them down a couple of seeds, and I don't think it'll do that. Ohio State still needs to take care of the conference schedule. Win 8 of 9, and Ohio State is in the playoffs with a 10-2 record. And 8-1 likely gets them into the conference championship game, so there's a chance that they're 11-2 and have a first-round bye.
I agree, though, that if the young guys can keep from making mistakes, we should be okay in this game, but don't stress the little mistakes. Turn them into learning experiences and the sky isn't going to fall.
While I agree this years schedule it pretty dang tough. A loss week 1 and you have 1 more week you can slip up and that’s it more than likely.

There’s a stretch in there where we go @Washington, Minnesota, @illinois, @Wisconsin and then Penn State.

Have to figure Washington and Wisconsin are night games. Then Illinois is the one you have to watch out for with how much they’re returning.

For a young team with a new QB I can certainly see a situation where we lose 2 other games and miss the playoffs if we lose Texas. To me in surprised we haven’t cancelled these big games because the big ten is tough as it is to navigate

With the new super conferences it's really dumb to schedule other juggernaut programs. Like you said, good chance 3 losses keeps them out of the playoffs. Especially week 1.

100%. I hate this game and sure if we win it’s going to be awesome but if we lose we have 1 more mulligan and that’s asking a ton with multiple top 15 teams left. Including one team that we can’t seem to beat right now.

It’s just not a necessary risk but oh well too late now

Fuck all that noise. This is Ohio State. The biggest boy on the block. Get the job done.

I get it.

But you’re risking a lot by playing these games.

You never know what happens if you just make the playoffs.

Like this past years team. We were clearly and unanimously the best team in the country. I don’t think particularly close.

Yet we still lost 2 games somehow.

This upcoming year there’s not really a returning team that seems dominant. So a team like ours that’s young could very well go on another run with how talented we are. That could all be for not if we lose the first game of the year to no fault of the teams. You’re a different team by years end typically and it’s pretty dicey to do this. Especially when not many teams will continue doing this.

Again, I get it… but for me? Just get in the playoffs and give yourself a shot. I do understand your point of view though.

But you’re risking a lot by playing these games.

You want to avoid taking risks that don't give you enough upside for taking said risk, not just broadly avoid risk.

This one pencils.

You are risking your margin for error in-conference being reduced if you lose but you are gaining an equal or greater margin for error in-conference if you win.

It makes you more money, keeps the brand in the spotlight and the CFP risk/reward is no worse than even. You do this everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Used to be, a school would take a game in a hostile atmosphere, merely to get the exposure. Playing well in front of a Texas team, for example, would expose your team to Texas kids who tuned into watch their team, but then saw the Buckeyes play. Now, with the big TV packages/schedules, all you gotta do is tune in. AND, a kid from Texas can tune into Columbus, and see the pomp and pageantry that is Buckeye football. And as a recent football attendee, it's quite different in the stadium than on the tube. Far better, except for the concession lines and hard seats. Quite agree that even a loss in this early game (unless it's a blow out), won't hurt the Buckeyes getting in the playoffs. (we proved that didn't we?).

Very true. Not saying we shouldn’t play good teams but I mean top 5 teams is that necessarily?

Maybe schedule a Tennessee or NC State or Iowa State. Likely wins but resume builders instead of playing 3 tin cans

Those kind of schools will want a home game back in return and are just a slightly shiner version of tin can.

You are better off with a MAC team at home.

I doubt that Washington is a night game being on the west coast. It's more likely to be a late afternoon game out there.

And color me shocked that you are predicting your usual gloom and doom. :Sick2:

There’s not too many rays of sunshine here if we’re being honest.

Only point is this is a tough schedule and for a younger team that’s not ideal. We could run the table but if it goes wrong there’s more games than normal that could be a problem.

The biggest thing to me is some MAC opponent tune up game to open and then play this game would have been a better idea. As you said, an extended schedule and tough schedule could make this a questionable decision. Saving grace is both teams lose a lot of experience and we're at home.

But enough of that shit, it's scheduled and it's going to be an electric opener in the Shoe. Let's whoop some Longhorn ass.
